That said, I always thought "defamation of character" was a civil action, not a criminal one. I guess the laws in Japan are different in that regard. In the U.S. you could get sued for defamation, but not arrested.

And no he does not need any model release unless its a commercial picture.

Then how is it that he was arrested?

A police officer in Iwate Prefecture has been arrested for defamation of character after he allegedly posted naked photographs of a female acquaintance onto an Internet message board without her permission.

WHERE'S YuriOtani?! I have to say "I told you so!" Okinawans got Japan and the U.S. to agree to move the 8,000 troops regardless of what happens to Futenma, yet "the plan was totally unacceptable because it ignores the wishes of the Okinawan people." What is it NOW?! We didn't agree to put a widescreen TV in each Okinawan's house?! I have to agree with that Maher guy... Okinawans are masters of extortion.

I'm surprised there are EA-6B Prowlers still in service! They were in use when I was in the Navy back in the early 80's. Granted, as an ECM platform they don't normally do much high-G maneuvering, but STILL - thirty year-old planes doing catapult launches and arrester-gear landings... O_o

The article TELLS you where they'll be leaving from:

“We decided to choose to reduce Okinawa’s burden as much as possible rather than being stuck in a stalemate by sticking to an earlier package,” Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told a news conference.

8,000 Marines will be leaving Okinawa. That is, they WOULD be leaving right up until the Okinawan's issue some other ridiculous requirement that delays the Marines' departure even longer.

Republicans like Rove are complaining because they were so dead wrong on the auto bailouts. Oh, how they wished GM and Chrysler were driven under so that they could be right and President Obama wrong.

??? I guess you didn't read my post above. It was (the Republican) President George W. Bush who approved the loans, not Obama. If anything, the Republicans should be thanking their stars that the bailout worked. It's just Karl Rove who appears to have forgotten what was happening three and a half years ago.

PETA is at it again. Looks like they've finally realized their previous publicity stunts - throwing red paint on people wearing furs - only resulted in an INCREASE in demand for the furs because replacements were needed due to the vandalism. Now they're going to try and get a court to declare domesticated animals "slaves". I hope you don't own a dog or cat, because dogs and cats would fall under any such ruling as well. I wonder what PETA would do if, upon winning the ruling, tens of thousands of pets were euthanized because the owners could no longer own them and the local governments refused to let them be released into the wild.

This is a pure publicity stunt and PETA should be slapped with a "Frivilous Lawsuit" charge. Every definition I can find of "slavery" either specifies being owned by "another" person, or "somebody else". Slavery is people owning people, not people owning animals.

I guess that's where we disagree, then. To me, any athlete who makes it to the Super Bowl was part of a team that performed better than the other teams in their conference over the course of only 18 or so games. There was nothing heroic about it.

It is standard procedure to require a release before a photographer can publish the image of someone. Yes, the photographer owns the copyright on the image because he's the one who framed and created the image, but all that does is prevent someone ELSE from publishing the image without his approval. He STILL needs permission from the model before he can publish an image of that model. In this case he failed in that regard.

Not taking anything away from the Giant's victory because they earned it, but I always get a sour feeling in my stomach when "hero" gets tossed about for something as trivial as a sports championship. IMHO, the word should be reserved for actions that TRULY qualify as heroic: things like entering a burning building to save someone, or charging a machine gun emplacement that has your squad pinned down.

As great as the Super Bowl is, you aren't knowingly putting your life in danger when you play the game.

“I was, frankly, offended by it,” said Karl Rove, mastermind of George W Bush’s presidential victories, who claimed on Fox News that the commercial was paid for with Chrysler bailout money.

“It is a sign of what happens when ... the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising and the best wishes of the management.”

Mr. Rove doesn't have a clue. The Chrysler bailout loans were approved by President GEORGE W. BUSH in 2008, not (then) President-Elect Barack Obama:

On December 19, George W. Bush announced that he had approved the bailout plan, which would give loans of $17.4 billion to U.S. automakers GM and Chrysler, stating that under present economic conditions, "allowing the U.S. auto industry to collapse is not a responsible course of action." Bush provided $13.4 billion now, with another $4 billion available in February 2009. Funds would be made available from the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. General Motors would get $9.4 billion, and Chrysler $4 billion.

The Windscale accident in 1957 is estimated to have caused some 200 cancers in Britain, half of them fatal.

That may be true, but Windscale was a reactor designed to create weapons-grade plutonium (not electric power) and I was talking about nuclear power, not nuclear weapons. We already know the horrific death toll due to the production and use of nuclear weapons. The statement I responded to was that "nuclear power is suicide."

If you want to combat the teen suicide problem, you'll need to address the bullying culture that has entrenched itself in the schools. Not just bullying by other students, but bullying by teachers as well. I'm not saying teachers should be all "happy happy joy joy" in the classroom, but you can get discipline established in a classroom without emotionally reducing a student to a pile of sheep dung.

Adult suicides are going to be a bit tougher to tackle. Some of it appears to be related to the economy and some appears to be related to horrific working hours - driving the life out of the salaryman before he actually decides to finish it himself. (Or maybe THAT is because of the economy too?)

What we learn from all this is that nuclear power is suicide.

Really? How many have died? I must of missed the numerous news posts from around the world of all the people who've died on an annual basis because of nuclear power. The ones who HAVE died are almost to a person from the now-defunct Soviet Union - either due to the Chernobyl fire or the runaway reactor on the Soviet sub. This implies a problem more with Soviet design standards than anything inherent in nuclear power. Yes, the concept of nuclear energy is dangerous, but most countries using it have been able to avoid fatalities so "suicide" is not applicable.

When the controls are all broken, and the hot and reacting fuel has melted down through the cracks and continues to burn away at the foundations, dropping snow on it would not help one iota.

Not to mention the fact that dropping snow from above would do nothing for the conditions INSIDE the containment vessel. The only thing the snow could possibly cool would be the spent fuel pool, and as far as I know that's not a current concern. The temperatures are rising INSIDE the containment vessel.

They're picking up litter. I get that. They're cosplaying some Touhou characters, I get that too. I won't ask WHY they're cosplaying (it IS Akiba, after all), but WHY are they picking up litter? The vests they're wearing seem to indicate this is some organized thing and not something they decided to do on the spur of the moment.

Read the Japan Times article. It was, in fact, coercion, not so skillfully cloaked as encouragement.

I DID read the article, and this part was telling:

Manabe is also quoted as saying that he "was not in a position to tell the officials to vote for a specific candidate," and that he also warned officials to be careful to maintain an impartial stance.

"We must be politically neutral when it comes to elections, so please pay attention to make sure that you do not violate, or are not viewed as violating, the Self-Defense Forces Law or other related laws," Manabe was quoted as saying. "Please also be careful when consulting your relatives (over the Ginowan vote)."

Here's what I see. An official gives a couple of talks to the people under him outlining the platforms of the two candidates, then tells them he is NOT telling them who to vote for. Did he misrepresent the candidate's platforms? If not then what has he done that would warrant being fired over? The employees have no pressure to vote one way or another unless this director-general gets to view each vote before it's cast. I don't think even Japan would allow that to happen.

The mayoral race has already become controversial after Ro Manabe, director-general of the Okinawa Defense Bureau, asked local bureau staff to vote in the election. When the news broke last week, the opposition Liberal Democratic and New Komeito parties accused the Defense Ministry of trying to influence the outcome of the election.

I've been wondering about this since the news broke. Did the director-general tell the local bureau staff HOW to vote, or just to vote? If the "local bureau staff" are residents, aren't they allowed to vote? Unless the director-general specifically told the staff which way to vote on which issues, then there's no basis to the charge that he was trying to influence the outcome of the election.

    @YuriOtani

My evidence of deception is the massive costs to move the Marines. The Americans would of kept raising the price then environmental impact until it was canceled.

Umm... You must think we're all idiots, but we're not. Your "evidence" is all smoke and mirrors. It's the Okinawans who kept causing the costs to rise. Every day of delay raises the costs. EVERY DAY. The delays created by the Okinawans are directly responsible for the increased costs. I'm sure you knew that, but found it more fun to find one more thing to blame the Americans on.

The environmental impact study was ALSO initiated by the Okinawans when they claimed some poor endangered manatee was going to be wiped out if the base was built at Camp Schwab. Again, I'm sure you were well aware of that already, but it gets you off to blame America for things. As for the manatees, if an animal that large in size is SO localized as to its species threatened by construction along a 1 mile streatch of shoreline, then the species is doomed anyways. They don't have enough mating pairs to survive in-breeding defects.

Don't know the details, so I can't make a judgement on whether the charge makes sense or not. Did the 19-year-old shoot out in front of the driver unexpectedly? Don't know.

It's strange that the only way Japan Today thought to identify the suspect is as a "Brazilian National", like that makes any difference to the story.
