@tom,
They're saving "disaster" for if/when the corium melts through the containment vessel and reaches the water table. THAT would be a disaster. As for right now, we can be thankful no one has died due to this radiation release. (please, don't try to include the clean-up worker who died of lymphoma a week after starting work there. It doesn't happen that fast.)

Japan is purchasing the "A" model. It seemed to me that over half of the stated problems in the program were specific to the "B" (VTOL) and "C" (Carrier-launched) models. A couple of problems that would be generic to all three models would be the problems with the helmet display system and a (classified) problem that is assumed to relate to the plane's stealthiness.

Yep. Firebombing was very effective and was put into place after the allies had experienced how tenaciously Japanese soldiers fought over every island after the war had turned against them. The civilians of Japan continued to churn out weapons and other material for the war effort, so once their cities came into range of our bombers, the civilians and the factories they worked at were bombed. They were treated no differently than the German civilians were (i.e. Dresden), yet to hear some people talk you'd think the Japanese were the ONLY ones that were firebombed during WWII.

Fighters require situational awareness that just isn't possible with drones. Add to that the signal delay between the drone and the operator, and you'll find a drone doesn't stand a chance against a manned fighter. The next time some news program is doing a live feed from somewhere else in the world, make note of the delay between when the anchor asks a question and the reporter starts answering the question. That's the delay between when a drone would detect an enemy fighter changed direction, the operator issues an appropriate course correction, and the drone RECEIVES the course correction. That delay will be fatal for the drone EVERY TIME.

The ones ordered by Japan are the F-35A model.
F-35A - Normal take-off and landing.
F-35B - Short/Vertical take-off and landing.
F-35C - Normal take off and landing with carrier-launch and arrester gear modifications.

I initially want to provide an amateur diagnosis of Post-Partum Depression (PPD). It turns out that PPD would not apply because it has never included infantcide as a symptom. More likely the diagnosis would be Post-Partum Psychosis.

I didn't think there were that many corrupt businesses in the Tohoku region. If this is targeting small businesses, then I don't think you need to worry that much about corruption.Those are usually the larger businesses (or become so quickly).

...until an out of the ordinary situation develops and their response-time is too slow. In that case the passengers would probably notice milliseconds before they died. As automated as the flight decks have become, they STILL require alert pilots behind the controls for when Murphy's Law pays a visit. The one thing you could NEVER call a stoned or drunk person is "alert".

You have to look at it from the Alzheimer's patient's point of view: Here is this apparent "total stranger" trying to convince you that they are your wife/husband and have been for years. Your response would likely be that this was a scam to take your posessions. Most people WOULD react angrily towards something like that. When it gets to that point, there's nothing the spouse can do. They've lost their loved one to the disease and all that's left is a stranger.

@tmarie,
Not sure what you mean by "monstrosity" if you're agreeing that the tower needed to be built. If you mean "monstrosity in height", the tower needed to be that high in order for the TV signals to reach past all the skyscrapers already in existence in Tokyo. If you mean "monstrosity in girth", the tower needs to be able to survive potential typhoons as well as earthquakes, so the base of the tower needs to be sturdy and resist lateral forces. That means the base is going to be wider than the majority of the tower. How many hurricanes have the CN tower had to face?
also @tmarie,
A quick search on Wikipedia reveals the following under the CN Tower entry:
So yes, people in Toronto DO worry about ice on the CN Tower.

Hmm. Guy is accused by a father of committing an "act of violence" against the father's daughter, for which he is being investigated. No word on what this "act of violence" was, but apparently not enough nor any supporting evidence for an immediate arrest.
Now the father's wife and mother are found dead in the back of their van. This IS enough violence for an immediate arrest.
Unless you want the police arresting everyone who is accused of assault without corroborating evidence (a.k.a. "hearsay"), where did the police go wrong? We can't have the police throwing people in jail simply because someone is ticked at them and files unfounded charges. Before anyone points out that these charges were NOT unfounded, I will point out that hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20.

Dang. Too slow! I was going to post about how the "actually radiation-related" comments are going to pour in. Stomach flu IS contagious, so if they're changing into their protective gear in the same room, I could easily believe that they all became infected.
BTW, anti-radiation protective gear (at least the stuff being used by the workers) isn't going to protect against a norovirus. The gear they're using is designed to protect against alpha particles - essentially airborne dirt. Viruses are much smaller.

The child was not necessarily an "angel", but certainly hadn't done anything by age 6 that would justify being beaten to death. Psycho Dad deserves a LOOONNNGGG stretch behind bars - and no ability to be alone with kids again once (if) he does get out.

They're still struggling to wade through the morass of classified stuff that should have been declassified long ago. They've been trying to streamline the process a bit and apparently are starting to make some headway.
Previously, before a document could be declassified, EVERY department involved in the document had to review each piece of paper and give their stamp of approval that the document could be declassified. This resulted in few documents actually making it through that gauntlet to be declassified. New rules are now in effect where a BATCH of similar documents are bundled together and a representative document of the batch is reviewed. If the representative document is green-lighted for declassification, the whole batch is declassified. In short, things should be getting better with regards to secrets being kept long past their usefulness.

The top of the tower will be about 2°C colder than at street level. I agree with other's that melting snow off the windows when the temperature is 0°C or lower is just going to allow the melted snow to refreeze below the windows - in larger than normal quantities. Then with the next strong wind the ice will get blown off and fall downwind of the tower.
@tmarie,
It's a support platform for digital TV transmission antennas. It had to be built higher than Tokyo Tower (the analog TV transmission tower) because the digital signals are more "line of sight" than the analog signals are.
