After spending eight years in Syracuse, NY where you can go from clear sky to white-out lake-effect snow in 100 yards, I can honestly say that I've had enough snow to last a lifetime. Feel free to take ALL the snow, Japan!

Winter is when many turn to supplemental heating and some forms are safer than others. I wonder if these fires were caused by faulty heating units?

Read another article on this that revealed that $1.3 Billion that Japan donated was spread over three years counting this one. Last year's donation was short because of the troubles following the earthquake, so this year's donation was larger than normal to try and make up some of the shortfall.

The military budget lives in a parallel universe: in no other budget would a 9% increase be described as a "cut."

What article did you read? The one I read said the proposed military budget is 9% LESS than the 2012 budget:

Panetta proposed a $613 billion budget for the year starting in October—a $525 billion base spending plan and $88.4 billion for combat operations, primarily in Afghanistan. The total is 9% below the 2012 request.

Maybe you're confused over the dates. The government's fiscal year starts in October. The budget being talked about in this article is the proposed FY2013 budget. The FY2012 budget went into effect in October 2011.

"Let Bill Gates do that. Use Japanese money to down pay the debt so taxes will not be raised."

Excellent point. I love how Japanese politicians are so generous with other people's money.

Umm... I can't tell if you're joking or not, so... I love how the posters on JT are so generous with other people's (i.e. Bill Gates') money.

Let Bill Gates do that. Use Japanese money to down pay the debt so taxes will not be raised.

Bill Gates already contributed $750 million to help out the Global Fund after the graft was discovered. http://www.japantoday.com/category/world/view/gates-injects-750-mil-into-troubled-global-fund

Japan is just trying to maintain a global presence via philanthropy. Taxes would still have been raised, as this money had already been earmarked for non-deficit use.

Python's genius in the 70's was sublime. I personally rank "Holy Grail" as one of the top two greatest comedy movies of all time (the other being Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles".) To this day it's not unusual to have a couple of co-workers start riffing on a scene from "Holy Grail" - almost 40 years after it was made!

So the only REAL question is:

    WHAT! ...is your favorite color?!

Until I saw the name Robin Williams, I was looking forward to it. That guy is a loser and hates people. I met him in NY once when he was drunk and he called me, my friends and others a bunch of little losers an peons. His friend tried to apologize, and use the drunk excuse.

Context, context, context. I doubt he just walked up to you and called you losers from out of the blue. I would guess he was drinking for a reason (maybe to drown his sorrows after another mediocre movie) and you guys were all "Gosh Mr. Williams, it's such an honor to meet you! Can I have your autograph?" Sometimes people just want to drink in silence, and the best way for a celebrity to achieve that is to dump on the people who WON'T leave him alone. As I said that's just a guess, but I've seen it before. Also, you admit he was drunk but still expect him to behave graciously? Most drunks are boorish to a fault. I'm surprised you didn't take that into account.

If we're not in a war, maintaining this many troops does not make sense. Of course they're going to have to cut troops. While i understand McCain's point, we can't keep paying a full-engagement military if we're not in an active war. Our best bet is to try and keep as many reserves as we can while reducing the active duty services.

I've said it before and I still firmly believe it: Anyone who runs for the office of the President of the United States is a masochist, certifiable, or both. There is no upside to that job. EVERYBODY in the world wants something from you and there is no way you're able to accommodate even 1/100 of those requests. You may have the best plan in the last two millennia, but Congress has other ideas.

They were conscripted into having sex with the Japanese soldiers. That makes them conscript workers. If Tokyo had been allowed to make the individual payments themselves, they probably would have included the sex slaves in their payments, but Seoul forbid it, instead taking a lump-sum payment that they then misused. Are you saying "comfort women" didn't tell ANYONE what the Japanese made them do until after the details of the Normalization Treaty were worked-out in 1965 - TWENTY YEARS AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER?!? I don't believe that for ONE MINUTE. If they were left out of the agreement, it's because Seoul intentionally left them out of the agreement. Again, the apology that is owed them needs to come from SEOUL. Tokyo issued their apology in 1965 with Seoul's blessing.

Wow. 2:1 people voted "yes". Nobody trusts the government when it comes to nuclear power, but by a 2:1 margin they're ready for the government to take over TEPCO! There appears to be a major disconnect, here.

I think it's both of the options the headline restricts us to. Unless the girls are getting pandered out to clients after their shows, then this is just entertainment. If showing leg and acting cute is going to sell more CDs, then more power to them. If they have to sell their bodies as well, then I'm against it.

The fact is that a big chunk of US recruits have criminal histories, mostly drugs and petty crime. Again, these are pentagon numbers.

But this article specifically addresses rape, and seems to be concentrating solely on the Army. The U.S. Army classifies rape as a "Major Misconduct Offense". The "Manual for Courts-Martial United States" http://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/pdf/mcm.pdf lists the following maximum punishment for someone convicted of rape:

    f. Maximum punishment.

    (1) Rape and rape of a child. Death or such other punishment as a court martial may direct.

This is a crime that can receive the death penalty. It doesn't seem like the military is ignoring it.

Speaking as an ex-sailor, I know this guy is "full of it" just from one quote:

They know the extent of this problem, they have done nothing about it, and nothing to inform the public, which is their responsibility.

Even when I was in back in the late 70's/early 80's, the navy was putting out the word that this kind of thing would not be tolerated. This guy's "they have done nothing about it" comment is pure B.S. designed to promote his latest "shock" film.

From Wiki re: Compensation as part of the Normalization Treaty:

The documents also recorded that the Korean government demanded a total of 364 million dollars in compensation for the 1.03 million Koreans conscripted into the workforce and the military during the colonial period,[6] at a rate of 200 dollars per survivor, 1,650 dollars per death and 2,000 dollars per injured person.

"Sex slaves" are workforce conscripts. South Korea received Japan's compensation for them already and spent it on other things. Japan must of had an inkling this would happen, but when they offered to pay out to the conscripts directly:

The documents also reveal that the South Korean government claimed that it would handle individual compensation to its citizens who suffered during Japan's colonial rule while rejecting Japan's proposal to directly compensate individual victims and receiving the whole amount of grants on the behalf of victims.

These victims of Japan's aggression need to be pestering SEOUL for an apology, not Japan.

Japan wanted to go with as much nuclear power as they could in order to reduce the need for off-shore energy imports. Tepco now wants to switch to Geothermal which would achieve a similar condition (power without having to buy Middle Eastern oil or coal from other places), but I have to wonder about the wisdom of drilling down into such a volcanically active region such as Japan. Drill in the wrong place and you've created a ready-made vent for a new volcano to spawn.

I imagine the article concentrates on the European and American continents because people from those continents would experience the most "culture shock". Other Asian countries have similar customs to Japan - at least much more similar than those in Europe or the Americas.
