The latest development is a setback for the Fukushima government which declared on Oct 13 that all newly harvested rice in the prefecture had passed inspection tests for radioactive substances and gave the go-ahead for the rice to be sold nationwide.

So this means (choose one): A. the inspection tests were poorly done. B. the inspection tests were correctly done, and someone lied about the results. C. the inspection tests were correctly done, the results were correctly reported, and somehow the rice got more radiation between the time of testing and the present time. D. something else - please explain __________________________________________________________

How is it that just about anything anyone has to say on this topic has a negative rating?

Well, I hear sportsmanship is a dying art in any case, both within and outside of hermit nations. Maybe in the future, people will buy tickets and attend events only to attack other audience members of different affiliations. This will save a lot of money, because there will be no actual need for a team or any equipment.

There are now a few of these types of gadgets that work through aps like Geiger Bot. There is no reason to think this one doesn't work, and I won't bother to develop a negative attitude before I have any data.

I have an old Russian geiger counter, and I wouldn't trust it to give me a numerically accurate reading, but if there is radiation, the reading will be higher than it is without radiation, and the readings are reasonably consistent. This means that it works if your goal is to detect higher than normal radiation, but not if you want to know for sure that the level is beyond a certain limit. If I start hearing that these new geigers are as accurate as the expensive meters, I'll buy on.

Japan already has small cars that get good mileage, but until fairly recently, the US car companies didn't have much to offer that will much good, so people bought imports.

The new Fords look pretty good, though, and get decent mileage, so probably things will even up a bit from here on. Fewer Japanese cars in the US, though, may lead to fewer jobs at those Japanese plants in the US and at their suppliers, so a it's not necessarily time to celebrate.

Potpourri of post-quake crimes contradicts foreign media's reporting of placid Japanese

No it doesn't. The Japanese behaved much better than the residents of almost any other city in the world. If 98% of the folks are honest, that's a lot better than just about anywhere. Look at New Orleans after Katrina, look at LA, look at Florida after hurricane, look around the world...Japan may not be perfectly peaceful, but there is no comparison with most places.

The only thing that surprised me in the map was the aqua blue area in northeast Hokkaido. I didn't realized it had gotten zapped to that extent.

He will have other problems, marital fidelity among them.

And in FUTURE NEWS, "Benoit “Ben” Lecomte" is dead.

I remember back when well-wishing was in style. You know, like "Good luck" or even "Have a nice trip" or "I hope you accomplish your goal." That kind of thing...

I wondered if anyone has considered the debris from 3/11 that's drifting towards the U.S. Not to mention the radiation in the water

I wondered about that, too, though most of the debris is well on its way to wherever it's going by now. Still, I wouldn't feel comfortable swimming in those waters... okay, yes, I'd drown in the first few hours, but I mean if I could swim well...

What Democrat is raising the Mormon issue?

    SushiSake3,

I get your point, but if you look into the FLDS, rather than the LDS, you will find quite a lot about child abuse, sexual and otherwise, polygamy, rape, welfare fraud, etc. by people who DO follow the dictates of their religion.

The LDS, the Mormons, have tried to separate themselves from the fundamentalist offshoot, which, in my opinion, is a huge problem for the rest of the state, and has given rise to leadership by such fine characters as Warren Jeffs and others.

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705394003/Utah-charges-dismissed-against-Warren-Jeffs.html

A lot of what is supported by this group is against the laws of the United States, so I would not vote someone like this into office, freedom of religion or not. Again, this is not the main Mormon group.

Don't Mormons promote multiple wives and sex with kids like the Muslims do? Anyone know their doctrines here?

Well, my understanding is that the main group of Mormons agreed to forego the multiple wife thing when Utah became a state. There are still offshoots of Mormonism that still practice polygamy, and I suppose they would define marriage as between one man and one woman...and another woman...and another woman....

I certainly wouldn't vote for him, but he shares a lot of centrist Republican views, so he will be a reasonably strong candidate among the pack of losers he is running against. HIs religion will be an issue among Fundamentalist Christians and possibly with a few others, but this won't be a huge problem, I think. The race is his to lose.

    Possibilities:

    1. A bunch of people have bad cases of thyroid cancer, and require a LOT of radiation.
    2. A nuke plant fuel rod not in Japan is leaking radiation into the environment.
    3. Somebody has bombed somebody and we don't know it yet.
    4. Somebody is testing little bitty nukes underground somewhere.

Looks like he did it Yakuza style so that the Japanese would understand.

I thought people cut off their finger as an apology for something they did, with ritual disembowelment reserved for something a bit worse.

Just couldn't put a finger on a solution...

You may have hit the nail on the head. I've got to hand it to you. He was up in arms about this.

A short excerpt from Wikipedia about the IEA follows. Note that I don't know if the reported bias is correct, but there is apparently enough evidence to be mentioned in the article:

"In 2009, Guy Pearse stated that the IEA has consistently underestimated the potential for renewable energy alternatives.[12]

The Energy Watch Group (EWG), a coalition of scientists and politicians which analyses official energy industry predictions, claims that the IEA has had an institutional bias towards traditional energy sources and has been using "misleading data" to undermine the case for renewable energy, such as wind and solar. A 2008 EWG report compares IEA projections about the growth of wind power capacity and finds that it has consistently underestimated the amount of energy the wind power industry can deliver.[13]"

because he doesn't have a clue on anything else

Now there in a nutshell is the problem with this candidate. The other stuff is probably not true, and if it is true, then I'm happy to wait until evidence is presented and contested, and until a decision is made by a judge. It seems that 80% of the folks posting already have him strung up before anyone has ruled that there is enough evidence to have a lawsuit. I'm okay with trial by a judge and trial by a jury, but not with trial by a message board.
