I do enjoy fixating on disaster as much as anybody, but, "the increased amount of groundwater is manageable" means not much bad and new is happening. It's just the same old bad stuff as before, and wasn't made much worse by the storm. This is good news, comparatively speaking.

I'm assuming the Megafloat, a barge full of containers of somewhat radioactive water is still parked next door? Maybe with a tarp over it? Oh well, we'll find out in the morning, I guess.

A few people in Tokyo and north of there are doing online radiation monitoring on Ustream, but I don't see any difference in levels.

I notice they turned off the live cameras there. Is that part of the preparation?

Met,
I sympathize. Three parts of the roof blew off here. I retrieved two sections and I'm hopiing for a break to get the third...don't want the wind to carry it into the glass. One big tree is down and the place doesn't feel secure. I think the sirens just went off. What fun!

I just chased down two screens a part of a balcony. I'm hoping the roof stays where it is. This is the biggest storm I've felt so far in Japan, and those temporary covers on the Fukushima power plants had better be put on well,

Frungy,
The rates of repeated offenses are my no means clear, and arguments about this draw from varied sources, reaching varied conclusions. Saying someone is a "pedophile" doesn't narrow it down enough, and the variables are complex. The following is from

Well, I knew a family that had a dog in the city. It was in a fence, and neighborhood kids would throw rocks at it. It never bit them, but I can't say I would have been so sad if it had, though I suppose that is a character flaw.
I at least hope that anyone who is thinking about prosecuting dog owners looks at the whole situation before making a decision, rather than trying to enforce a blanket rule.

After whirling in the south like a confused dervish, the storm has leapt northeast with a menacing gaze toward Hokkaido. The rain is coming down like a piledriver on already sodden earth. The warning bells are ringing through the night like .... oh, never mind!

Probably there is a flow chart that assigns compensation only to those who were affected by radiation but who were not affected by the tsunami. Radioactive but wet - no money.

There is always hope. Politics is full of new faces, and the new faces are allowed more power based on how they deal with the old faces. Temptation and corruption are there to be dealt with, and some people can deal with them, so there is hope. I think the new prime minister is doing better than I expected so far, by the way.

This is debatable because when you serve your time, you should have a fresh start. If murderers get a fresh start, then pedophiles should get a fresh start. And this is complicated because of research showing that people who are pedophiles remain pedophiles at heart, and though perhaps they can stop doing what they want to do, they don't stop wanting to do it.

Darren,
Thanks for the link, and I totally understand your caution. The thing is, radiation seems to pop up in unexpected places, not just toward the east. Take this recent data, for example. Why is Yamaguchi prefecture, nowhere near the nuke plant, more than twice as high as surrounding prefectures? Weak batteries? Operator asleep at the geiger? Another nuke plant problem? We just don't know. And then, people are only talking about cesium, not other stuff that was evidently released as well. I just don't get that warm, fuzzy feeling of being protected from harm by the government.

I just go by the radiation levels (prefer .05 on the map below or less), and I think northern Tohoku and Hokkaido aren't bad:
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/radiation-levels.html
I won't buy anything from southern Tohoku, nothing from Fukushima or Miyagi, and I'm staying away from all Japanese beef until they have a system I trust

Well, Japan had a long history of not eating meat, so they will survive this in any case..
