The Japanese have a reasonably good argument concerning their ownership of the disputed islands, but the Russians aren't going to leave unless they are forced to go, and I don't see Nato troops landing to support a "Russian spring."

We don't usually read articles about earthquakes less than 6 unless they are unusual in some way either... Yes, I know, we're reading this one...

A shift from maximizing profits to maximizing service might draw more customers in the long run, but that requires long-range planning, something the USA no longer does. I love Tom DeMicke's comment above...you've captured the current ethic so well!

Yeah well, it's now Monday, around 9 pm in Japan, and premarket trading looks horrible. It's not about the USA, it's about Europe. I can't imagine the Nikkei is going to do so well if this keeps up.

Earthquakes are caused by catfish. If the fish start flipping aroung, head for the door. What's so difficult about that?

Electric2004, You got it, but I guess I should apologize to those who were offended by my remark. I just thought it was an amazing amount of rain.

I would hope that this doesn't happen. Here are some reasons: 1. There could be accidents in transporting the waste, and equipment used would need to be decontaminated.. 2. There could be leakage from waste sites in the future, polluting areas that are currently clean. 3. More people would be exposed to radiation if the waste is moved. 4. Transportation costs would make the disposal more expensive. 5. Creating disposal sites within the prefecture is not that difficult.

It's STILL raining. There was a guy with a big boat and a bunch of animals here a little while ago... don't know what he wanted.

There's STILL a lot of rain coming down, considering that the typhoon has passed, supposedly. This is a strange storm with tons of rain and not much wind. Plus, now another storm is currently southeast, so our tokyo city dwellers may get to enjoy this before long as well.

Well, Mothra DID have a catchy song. Not sure what kind of song a radioactive feral zombie cow would have... and then there's the problem of finding little twins in a cage to sing it...

Ummm. Not finding their bodies does not necessarily mean they've gone feral, I think. Before naming the new feral breed, shouldn't we find one or two?

PS: Taj, I wasn't claiming that the rain from the storm wouldn't cause damage, by the way. Flooding, landslides, yes, I agree.

Well, provided that "kt" and "kts" as a measurement of wind are the same, the JTWC is measuring 60 (at 2pm, with gusts that are stronger), and the JMA is measuring 65. I think it has to measure 63 kt to be a typhoon in either system, but I'm not sure about that.

It appears to be mostly a rain and wave event. Not so much wind, at least not where I am, and the US jtwc site still isn't calling it a typhoon yet, just a tropical storm. I wonder why the Japanese and US measurement of the wind is so different.
