What's with these big ones recently? Another 8+ on the way or something?

I don't know...the east coast hasn't really stopped rocking since the big one, and they do say that aftershocks from such a quake can continue for a year.

...this president is literally using this press conference to create a financial panic over the weekend about the opening of the markets on Monday. He is warning of disaster on Monday

IF there is no deal on Monday, and I'm beginning to think there won't be, the markets will tank, president or no president. S&P will lower ratings on the debt, foreign money will dump the dollar, and there will be a financial bloodbath. The collapse will not be stopped by either Obama or Boehner. It will be the reaction of the world to yet another country that defaults on its debt.

Since I was just posting about this, I just quit my contract with NHK. Rapid-fire questions, wait, more questions, wait, etc. The woman on the other end was really nice, but really, I have an analog TV, so digital is not possible. It should be an easier process. My having SkyPerfect threw them for a while, I guess...Are you sure you aren't watching Fuji TV? Are you sure you're not watching something digital? Still, mission accomplished, and no more charges to NHK. Maybe I even get a refund.

More atrocities in God's name. What part of "Thou shalt not kill" don't these folks understand? Oh, I know the pat answer - "It's a war, and you have to kill people in a war." or then there's " It's really "Thou shalt not murder' - killing is no problem.". The people with these views, whereever they live, should all be locked in a room together. I'm disgusted by them. Such a tragedy and a terrible waste of life. So sad for all concerned. Rest in Peace.

I have Sky Perfect, which I guess will continue to work, and there isn't much other stuff that I will miss except maybe sumo, once in a while. I'll just keep what I've got, I think.

Just heard on BBC that there may have been another gunman, one that is still at large.

Okay, there's a little discussion of the issue of Norwegian Christian fundamentalism here. I don't know the slant of this website, but at least there are some clues: http://www.juancole.com/2011/07/white-terrorism-in-norway.html

Sorry. My day for typos. That should have been a milder, "Does anyone know?"

This guy is evidently a Christian fundamentalist. I don't know much about Norwegian Christian fundamentalists, but I wonder how this kind of action fits into his belief system. Doesn't anyone know?

Name one reason I should be worried about feeding my kids radioactive food.

You surely know this by now, and children and infants are most at risk, but if not, this is from the CDC (Center for Disease Control), which is not a left-wing, tree-hugging organization, by the way:

"Exposure to Cs-137 can increase the risk for cancer because of exposure to high-energy gamma radiation. Internal exposure to Cs-137, through ingestion or inhalation, allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues, especially muscle tissue, exposing these tissues to the beta particles and gamma radiation and increasing cancer risk.

For more information about Cs-137, see the Public Health Statement by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp157.html, or visit the Environmental Protection Agency at http://www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/radionuclides/cesium.html."

You make it sound like the wealthy pay no taxes at all.

Then let me be more careful in my explanation, because I didn't mean to imply or state any such thing. I simply don't think the rich need any more tax breaks than they used to have. I favor a repeal of the Bush tax cuts that affected those making $250,000. or more, and I don't think holding up the budget because some don't want that to happen is worthwhile. I favor paying our bills - all of them, in any case.

Repealing the tax cuts for the rich is a good idea. There is no reason for them to excluded from taxes, and until Bush's tax cuts for the rich, they paid alongside everyone else, as they should. The argument that the rich need those cuts because they create jobs is hogwash. After years of lower taxes for the rich, where are the jobs?

Cutting spending is a good idea as well, but it takes more money going into the pot as well as less money going out of the pot to have a nation. States are laying off teachers, roadworkers, police, etc. because they have no money. It's shameful that a great country like the USA doesn't have enough moolah to pay for basic services, and is at the verge of default. Boener is totally wrong that he has the support of the people in this carefree attitude toward handling the country's obligations. Mainstream Republicans of years past have had differences with the Democrats for sure, but paying the bills used to be considered a duty, and not even a topic for discussion.

    News? not really...

I agree. These 6-8 line articles on topics people really want to know about are worse than useless. Someone said a lot of these are feeds from Kyodo news, and that complete articles cost more, requiring a more expensive subscription. Maybe that's true.

Since most of the readers are living in Japan, though, and since they are reading about the poisoning of their food supply, would it be possible and affordable to have these kinds of articles be full-length, and for other articles to be cut instead? I for one would appreciate that.

The government now says it will buy up all the tainted cattle that has reached the market. I imagine waiting until it has all been eaten has really saved them a lot of money, and yet still gives the impression that they are working on this.

Now the chickens and pigs had to be fed something before they came to market as well, and that something was no doubt radioactive as well, but I think we can expect the same money-saving technique to be used once again.

I find this scary, but maybe I wouldn't if I understood it. I'm thinking that systems break down, evern if they work fine at first.. If the starter fails to start, that's annoying but not so bad. Ditto for an alternator or a battery. When a system like this goes bad, though, yikes, I wouldn't want to be the driver.

I'm tired of hearing, "no immediate health risk.". How about "only increased the likelihood of cancer in the future by x percent"? (x=estimate). It would be a little less evasive.

Well, one could form groups of psychically advanced employees to send healing energy to both the victims and the perpetrators. The energy level of the entire establishment would be raised, and the dross of negative thinking would drop away. Barring that, you could fire the bullies.

PS: The contaminated straw came from Miyagi prefecture, by the way. We'll probably have some good sales on Japanese beef in the coming months, since this stuff fed a lot of cattle.

Posted in: Beef, milk, tea, spinach and other vegetables have been contaminated due to the Fukushima nuclear crisis. How much worse do you think this is going to get? For example, do you think rice will be affected?
