Wanda: We have special batteries here for our cars and you don't need a Landcruiser all the time. The biggest problem would be in case of earthquakes for getting away since your car is covered in snow and it takes about 10 minutes to defrost. So far, we had record snowfall and record minus temperatures up here. No joy at all.

I love the idea of ice skating rinks in cities. Every school in Hokkaido has a free ice skating rink in winter. Kids up here in Hokkaido had to brave chilly temperatures that were 11 degrees colder at the same time than their Tokyo counterparts.

What is really outrageous are international plane tickets. I really don't understand why there is such a big price difference for the exact same ticket.
Buying frozen fruits and vegetables is really cheap. Costco has great deals, also with toilet paper. Buy your vegetables on Tuesdays and they are half price at Aeon.

I love Uniqlo and G.U. and all the things they do especially in Bangladesh and the olive tree growing project. They also employ 1 handicapped person per store which is very new for Japan. At least a company that makes affordable clothes for everybody. Many people only wear clothes for one season anyway. I hope to see more of their stores worldwide.

That's probably going yo be the Captain's fault. One thing to consider is that the navigators aren't correct anymore with the recent magnetic north pole shifts but the Captain should have known it.

That norovirus sounds scary. Cleo's insights are very informative. I am sorry to hear you had to go through such an ordeal. I hope that Princess Masako will recover soon from it too.

Windsurfing is very different from surfing, you don't move your arms up and down so much. Surfing requires a lot more flexibility than windsurfing thus 6mm is about as thick as you can manoeuvre. I know there is a 7mm out there for surfing but I don't think it would be so good.

That's 83 people per day committing suicide. How sad. We all have to help vulnerable people more out, this is everybody's responsibility.

@It'sMe:The 10mm wetsuit is good for diving but not for surfing since it restricts your movements. We usually wear a 6/5/4mm up here in Hokkaido with hood, boots and gloves together with a waistbelt with a heating pad and that's warm enough even in the snowstorm. The sea is not that cold, it is getting out that is terrible.

Very nice picture. But some advice to the surfer, in winter, go and hit the waves of Sea of Japan. The Pacific is flat most of the time. I guess he just went out sitting on his board to meditate or he had a fight with his wife and wanted to get away from it all.

I never had any problems with online shopping and I am happy to have it here in the sticks where I can't even buy a steak. Amazon is very fast, iherb is really great and cheap for supplements and organic food.
