"In addition, as you are such an expert on Americans, you should know that we prefer to cheer for "our" team"
That's exactly what Cleo meant. Egocentric and arrogant. Chauvinism in the sports games can be tolerated, but in the humanitarian issue, like the victims of war or terrorism, it's just lack of compassion and concern.

Indeed. Many Bush supporters claim that, after all, it was a good thing to topple the bad guy Saddam, although it really was not the objective of the invasion in the first place. Those Bush supporters are convinced (or try to convince themselves) that those killings and deaths were necessary for the “war on terror” which a very vague, unclear definition for this invasion.
They are not conscious that by invading the sovereign nation for no real reason, they became the “terror” and the “threat” for the world.

*" In fact, Hussein did allow IAEA inspectors into Iraq before the invasion, and they "found no evidence or plausible indication of the revival of a nuclear weapons programme in Iraq." Saddam also allowed the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) into Iraq before the invasion, and its inspectors "did not find evidence of the continuation or resumption of programmes of weapons of mass destruction."
"As Begala noted, in September 2002, Saddam agreed to allow UN weapons inspectors into Iraq. The UN Security Council subsequently voted to allow the IAEA and UNMOVIC to travel to Iraq and examine its alleged weapons of mass destruction programs, with the first inspectors arriving in the country in November. The IAEA focused only on Iraq's nuclear weapons capabilities, and on March 7, 2003, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei reported to the Security Council that, "to date," the IAEA (through its Iraq Nuclear Verification Office) had "found no evidence or plausible indication of the revival of a nuclear weapons programme in Iraq." Just over a month later, on April 14, in another letter to the Security Council, ElBaradei wrote that the IAEA had again concluded that "[i]n the nearly four months during which the IAEA was able to conduct inspections in Iraq, significant progress was made in assessing the status of Iraq's nuclear related capabilities" and that "as of 17 March, 2003, the IAEA had found no evidence or plausible indication of the revival of a nuclear weapons programme in Iraq." Congruent with Begala's claim on Anderson Cooper, ElBaradei noted in his April 14 letter that, "[o]n 17 March 2003, the IAEA ... had to withdraw its staff from Iraq, as part of the decision to withdraw the staff of UNMOVIC and other UN staff, out of concern for their safety following an advisory of upcoming military action."
Similarly, in its May 30, 2003, report to the Security Council, the executive chairman of UNMOVIC wrote: "In the period during which it performed inspection and monitoring in Iraq, UNMOVIC did not find evidence of the continuation or resumption of programmes of weapons of mass destruction or significant quantities of proscribed items from before the adoption of resolution 687 (1991)."*

I'm not European, and I don't even live in a EU country.
Anyway, as I said, to accept the behavior of Saudi Arabia, Chinese and Israel without problem and sanctioning Cuba because of its dictatorship is a double standard.

Cuba has been opened to the world since many decades, except for Americans. Many of my friends had their vacation there, especially in the area of Varadero. Luxurious hotels face to the ocean looks just like Cancun, and for sure, it’s better than Miami. (I’ve been to Miami twice, many hotels are getting old there… and the beaches are not very attractive.) It’s true, the Cuban regime is not democratic, but at the same time, it’s not very strict as how it used to be in USSR. Only the government and the rich business people can get the wealth while the ordinary people stay poor… just like in China, India, or many other countries, even in the US. I don’t know what this “EU sanctions” against Cuba was. I myself had some contact with Cuban companies for business trade few years ago. (At the end I didn’t make the deal, but it was not their fault.) I think those “sanctions” are hypocrisy. A government trades with a rogue country if there are the political or economic interests. (US trade with Saudi Arabia, China, and Israel etc…) And often, those sanctions help the country’s government to make even more money. (Like Saddam used to do)

26% of Australians = a little bit less than 5 million obese people. This is a population of a big city like LA. 25% of Americans = a little bit less than 70 million people. This is the entire population of a country like Germany.

There is one strange thing. Usually, when the people assemble to demonstrate in China, they are immediately surrounded by the police or military and controlled. Chinese people are just not allowed to demonstrate. But this time, there were many demonstrations in different cities in China at the same time. I wonder if they weren’t orchestrated by the Chinese government.

In Europe, many countries make an annual survey of the car reliability.
Since many years, Toyota is the top (or sometimes 2nd) on the list. On the contrary to the general idea, the Mercedes and the BMW are not the most reliable cars. (Although they are very high standard, of course) In Europe, especially in Scandinavia, Germany or Switzerland, the Japanese cars dominate the market.
The Japanese makers make the car in the needs of the market. The same model in Japan, in Europe or in America is not the same. That’s what Americans can’t do. The American cars are just not adapted in Europe. (Or in many countries) Too big, suspensions are too soft, heavy looking and not economical, without mentioning their reliability.
Most of German cars are very reliable. But they are more expensive than the Japanese cars. I used to have BMW, now I have Mercedes and Lexus. German cars have a very steady drive, but less comfortable than Lexus. It all depends on what you are looking for.
Like Notginger, I’m interested in Tata’s compressed air engine car. It’s actually developed in Southern France by a French engineer. They tried to commercialize it since more than a decade. But no European Car Makers were interested. (We think because of the lobby of oil companies) That’s why they had to go to India to produce the car, which is not a bad thing.

“And the fact that you speak English, as I do, on this forum is proof enough that the Americans saved your Euro hide from the Nazis in WWII...”
This proves only that you can only speak or write in English. (In Europe, many people speak and write in several languages, but it’s not because of the WW2) This doesn’t prove anything that America saved Europe. This shows only your arrogance about the America in which you certainly were not born yet. I told you before, without the USSR victory in the east front, America lead allies couldn’t win against Nazis. But you didn’t get my point. In the WW2, many allies fought together, because there was a real threat to the world. But this Iraq invasion by the US lead allies had no justification and that’s why not only the European countries, but also most of the world’s countries didn’t follow the US. And the allies could win theWW2 thanks to all the other countries. The proof is that the US troops alone still can’t win in Iraq, without the “real” reason and the other countries.

You claim yourself to be a realist??? The Europe of 90, 60 years ago or even 10 years ago are not the same countries as now. The UK of Brown and France of Sarkozy are not the same as the Blair’s and Chirac’s. But you put them all in the same basket as “Europe”. The realistic people who opposed to this invasion from the beginning know that America isn’t the same country as before G.W.Bush stole the US presidency.
And don’t believe that only the US saved France in the WW2. Without the victory of the USSR on the east front against Nazis, the allies couldn’t defeat Nazis that easily, without saying that the sacrifices of the Canadians, Australians, and other allies in the war against the real threat to the world. That’s what lacked in Iraq. The real reason. Without it, nobody would follow the idea.

Well, you still dodge the point. Why do you think that the European countries should have get involved with this failed invasion based on lies ?

“Hmm, I never said that ! Why are you trying to put words in my mouth ? For the record though... Saddam was the one telling lies.”
” Europe should be ashamed ! Their selfish attitudes have allowed deaths in Iraq to spiral. Trust me, if France, Germany, and a half other dozen European nations got involved... this woulda been over years ago !”
You clearly were expecting the European countries to get involved in this invasion based on lies. So I believe it’s fair to say that “you presumes that this invasion based on lies was right” Or maybe you think this invasion was wrong after all?
“He told so many, so big, so believable... especially when he went out and gassed the Kurds, the Iranians, and invaded Kuwait !”
If Saddam lied or not has nothing to do with this invasion based on lies. Don’t try to justify yourself by changing the point. What were his lies on these anyway? He actually did gassed Kurds and attacked Iran with the help of the US. He also invaded Kuwait, but what did he tell as a lie? He said that Kuwait used to be an Iraqi province, so he wanted it back. It’s not completely a lie. (But of course it doesn’t give him the right to invade Kuwait)
Your statement doesn’t have the coherency. You are just defending your first comment, but you don’t give any explanation why European should have joined this invasion based on lies, which became a complete failure, ideologically and practically. Why refusing this invasion is a selfish attitude? The “deaths in Iraq to spiral” is only the consequence of this US led invasion. It’s not the fault of the other countries that didn’t agree with the US.
If you support this illegal invasion, just say so, but don’t blame the others because they didn’t agree with you. You are just whining because some European countries didn’t join your failed invasion.

” Europe should be ashamed ! Their selfish attitudes have allowed deaths in Iraq to spiral. Trust me, if France, Germany, and a half other dozen European nations got involved... this woulda been over years ago !”
Your logical is wrong. You presume that this invasion based on many lies was right. You agree with the idea of invading a sovereign country by force, without any “right reason”. Most of the European people and many European governments knew from the beginning that Bush & Co.’s invasion was not what they claimed to be. (9/11, Al Qaeda and Iraq link, then threat of WMD, then topple of Saddam etc.) As many posters say here, this invasion shouldn’t have been started. There were many nations in the world opposed to this invasion at UN assembly. Few years ago, Bush demanded UN to help this situation. The UN replied if the US troops withdraw, they will send the UN troops, but some US troops can stay in Iraq under UN commandment. Bush ignored this response and didn’t ask again. It is clear that Bush’s main preoccupation is not to stabilize Iraq, but to stay in Iraq as the commanding occupier. So before you put the blame on the other nations for this America’s failure, think how you could help Iraqi people as an occupier of the country that should have never been invaded.
