“There’s a little bit of expectation that they can do more than they really can do,” said Sal Russo, a California-based co-founder of the Tea Party Express.

Sal Russo is also a 40-year Republican party hack, whose career in the Republican backrooms goes back to the Nixon administration. Now he says maybe expectations are a little high. Funny how he didn't say that BEFORE the election.

Also, some activists are "dismayed" by what they see happening already. That is a bit like walking through a train tunnel and being dismayed to see a train coming at you. Of course it is happening, not sure how people can be so blind and naive.

The interesting thing here about Palin is that can't get things right even when she is. Of course she was libeled, there was never and still isn't any evidence that the shooter was influenced specifically by the political atmosphere. Now maybe you can argue that a mentally unstable person is influenced in a general way by the society around him, but you can't blame Palin for that. So what does she do in this situation? She wraps herself up in her sense of victimization and narcissism and shoots herself in the foot. You think some people didn't hope / know she would do that?

Join the real world Palin fans. Who do think pumped the idea that she was being treated unfairly? The Republican machine got what they wanted from her and now they are going to get rid of her. Just watch.

The U.S. Supreme Court clarified the meaning and intent of the 2nd Amendment.

Obviously you are going to say that is what they did, they can't say we dreamed this stuff up so we could get what we wanted. "Clarification". sounds very official.

This is also the same Supreme Court that has decided that corporations have the same rights as individuals, while posters here claim the State has no rights. Uh, corporations are legal creations of the STATE. They can not exist without the power of the State behind them, but in this legal fantasy land they have rights but the State (their creator) doesn't. In other words the US Supreme Court regularly engages in this kind of legal hocus-pocus, aka "judicial activism", and the second amendment decisions are just another example.

arrestpaul- The Supreme Court can decide whatever it wants, it doesn't change what is written in the second amendment. All they did was come up with some legal mumbo-jumbo to justify making the pre-determined desired decision.

yokomac, Syria is on only 3 points. If Jordon beats Syria, Japan is through even if they lose.

Another game with no goals from the striker position, so same as usual.

But Saudi Arabia losing to the team that can not be named on JT was a good result for Japan. They are already out so will have nothing to play for. Looks like Japan is through to the next round, unless they lose big somehow and mess up their goal difference.

The US and specifically Arizona have militias.

Ah, but are they "well regulated", and if so, by who? Are they working for the security of a free State? Don't blame me, I didn't write the US constitution. I am not selectively ignoring it either.

I think people should be able to keep and bear all the muskets and flintlock pistols they want to.

They should also be able to keep and bear arms if they are willing to join the militia and head off into the wilderness to fight some very angry Indians and the Redcoats. Maybe there could be a 200th anniversary re-enactment of the War of 1812. Any American who wants to have a gun must go across the Niagara River in an open boat (non-motorized of course) while the British army fires cannonballs at them. Those who make it across will then retreat and go home, and get to keep their arms.

So as you can see, just following the US constitution as it is written would fix the gun problem pretty quick. Those militias are "necessary" too by the way, but the cherry pickers ignore that part, so now you have guns but no militias. Selective reading and selective history are very useful skills!

I see we have have the usual doublethink to start the thread. How dare people claim that political rhetoric played a role in the actions of a nutcase, now gets the follow up up of how Obama is at fault for using dangerous political rhetoric. It either is a problem or it isn't, it can't be both. By the way, 1984 was a novel, not a textbook.

I did enjoy seeing the useful idiot walk right into the punch though. She really should take the time to figure out who her enemies are. Hint, they aren't on the imaginary "American political left". We will see if she can get up, but if she does there will be many more punches to follow this year. She has outlived her usefulness.

ABC just reported a shark was seen swimming down the main street of one town. Kind of sums up what a terrible situation it is.

Agree with atamant. This article is about the state of one victim's recovery, there is not much point in also writing that one of the dead victims is still dead. If there is information about the judge that is related to the shootings, this isn't the article for it to be in.

TumbleDry- People can argue all day about the role of government in the economy (subsidizing business etc.) but banks are a different case. Once banks are no longer subject to market forces (ie. accountable for their losses), your pretty economy is pretty much toast. There is no economic justification for rescuing banks, you just shut them down and start over. Sweden proved that in the 1990's. But the people in charge care about the Ponzi, not the economy. Eventually though a dumb parasite will kill its host, and unfortunately that seems to be where the world is heading.

As for what the BOJ and other central banks are up to here, I don't claim that I can figure out the details. But I am pretty sure they are up to no good, at least for anybody other than banks (especially German ones!).

Usual central bank smoke and mirrors magic tricks. The Irish and other countries' debts will never be repaid and they know it, this is just about the BOJ doing their part to help bury the bodies and make sure banks don't have to deal with that nasty capitalism thing.

Hopefully the crocodiles are further up north, but snakes are maybe going to be a big problem. I remember a story of a guy in Western Australia who was killed by a snake when he was cleaning up after his property was flooded. Also saw a documentary, maybe on Discovery Channel, that claimed that sharks move into the rivers in Queensland during floods, so hopefully that was just sensationalism.

Anyways, the report I just heard is that the number of missing is now over 90. Pretty unbelievable pictures, especially the shot of the family on top of the car with water all around them. ABC radio says the mother and child have been found alive but the father is still missing. Tragic stuff, hope everybody in Brisbane can stay safe when the worst hits.

The only place in the state where a citizen wouldn't have been armed and shot back at this lunatic would be at a Democratic Congress woman's public event.

Actually, you have no idea if any citizens were armed or not. I would not be surprised at all if some people at the event were carrying weapons but in the chaos and panic of the unexpected situation never got their guns out of their pocket or bag. For all the talk about law-abiding citizens carrying weapons to protect themselves, there is a real lack of news stories about people actually using their weapons to protect themselves. One explanation maybe is that they don't because they are in over their heads.

Two separate issues here. One is about people choosing to carry a weapon after making a rational assessment about the risks involved in carrying and the dangers of not carrying, and having the experience and training to handle the weapon. I have no problem with those people having weapons, hey there are dangerous places in the world. Two is about the fantasylanders who want a weapon to protect themselves from "bad" people and take care of situations which they have no experience of being in in the first place and no understanding of the risks. Most pro-gunners fall into the second group, experts in stuff they know nothing about, who know how they would for sure be able to handle the bad guy even though they have never encountered a bad guy before. Having been there myself, I would bet that 90% of them would either never manage to get their gun out, or would get themselves killed trying.

that a McDonalds add was just as likely to set him off as a political advert.

That may or may not be true, but people have to wait for more info on the shooter before they can say that. There is a rush to say political rhetoric is to blame, and another rush to say it isn't. How about trying the radical step of letting the facts determine the answer instead of choosing whatever answer people want to hear? Bottom line is that a mentally ill individual targeted a politician, let's wait and see why before making conclusions.

And I think BurukaminDes was being sarcastic there, Rat.

if it had been a Repub event the open and concealed carry crowd would have taken out this drugged-out Lib within a millisecond.

Badsey is making the same assumption that the pro-gun crowd always makes. That the "law-abiding citizen" always comes out the winner against the crazy / bad guy, and that nobody else gets caught in the crossfire. Yes, a person who suddenly finds themselves in a completely unexpected life threatening situation is going to able to keep their head and take out an opponent who is either mentally unstable or a professional criminal, maybe with previous experience with his weapon. I also question how many of the pro-gun types have ever been in this kind of situation where somebody pulls out a gun. I have, and believe me, the reaction is not "I say, that bad fellow has a gun, I shall calmly take out my gun to defend myself / hope somebody else has a gun to defend us". The reaction is more like bloody #%#%#%# and things get very crazy very fast, and I question how many "law-abiding citizens" are up to handling their weapon in that situation.

Now that all doesn't mean I can't understand why people want to carry guns for self-defense. I question their risk-assessment skills, but I can understand the reasoning if you live in certain places. Just pointing out their are some logical fallacies at work too.

as nations struggle to recover from the global financial crisis.

Subtle change there, a year ago the article would have probably just said "as nations recover". Now they have to put in the word struggle. How much longer the politicians can get away with the spin that there is any recovery in the first place is the question. The debt and globalization genies are out of the bottle, and they can't put them back, period.

Why are u guys so fascinated by Fox?

I didn't bring up Fox, just commented on what people were already arguing about. Also not fascinated by it, just don't think it is a news channel, and that it exists to serve other purposes. If people want to watch it go ahead, but I prefer to get my news from a news outlet.

As for the idea that the shooter was just a nut with no identifiable political ideology, I think you actually kind of want your political assassins to have an ideology. Nuts running around shooting politicians without any coherent ideology behind what they are doing is a pretty bad state of affairs to have.
