The Chechnya situation goes back to the times of Stalin and even further back. It is easy to lump it all in with modern day Islamic terrorism but it's not about that, even though the Russian government wants to portray it that way.

You reap what you sow. You can have sympathy for the victims, and condemn the action, but still know that.

SenatorAcorn reckons wrong. Apparently he doesn't know that the guy who said Canada does not have the appetite to keep soldiers in Afghanistan longer is a Canadian conservative.

You mean, have the government spend the money they taxed from Americans, and spend it on some Americans, but not all Americans? IE Redistribution of wealth?

Well that is how the banking industry works. If it is good enough for them, why isn't it good enough for the health care industry?

By the way, the money will not be spent on "some" Americans. Last I checked every American is going to get sick, or have an accident, and die. You can pay when they get insurance or you can pay when they show up at the emergency ward. You are still going to pay.

You have to give Ann Coulter credit, she is really really good at being Ann Coulter. She played the situation like the professional self-promoter she is.

As for Palin, she and her crowd are just selling a fantasy with her anti-government, anti-spending routine. No American politician of either party is ever going to turn off the taps, because they would tank the economy, and nobody wants to be the one in power when that happens. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't, or that maybe just letting things crash, wiping out the banks, and starting over wouldn't be better in the long run. Just that they won't do it, and anybody who believes they will is being taken for a ride.

The rights to F1 in Japan are held by Fuji TV. For years, the races were shown live on the Fuji satellite channel, so you could watch them live if you had SkyPerfect or it was in your cable package, and then re-broadcast late at night on the regular over-the-air Fuji station. Then last season the races disappeared from the regular satellite channel and were moved to their new Fuji Next pay channel. An extra 2000 yen a month or so I think. So F1 is there but you have to look for it and then pay for it. But don't know how many people want to pay an extra 24000 yen a year or so just to watch F1, I know I don't.

But exiling the races to some pay-tv ghetto is not the brightest way to do business, tennis does the same thing by sticking 3 of the 4 grand slams on Wowow. It's going to cost you a lot of attention and popularity in the long run. I heard a while ago that Japan is the only country that hosts a Grand Prix that does not show all F1 races live on an over-the-air or basic cable channel. Don't know if that is still true, but it was a few years ago.

So the former governor of the most socialist state in America says the days of big government and big debt spending are over. Why doesn't she just get "clueless" tattooed across her forehead? The tea-partiers are in a lose-lose situation. Either they are going to destroy the Republicans with their purity purges and make them unelectable, or worse, they are going to win. And if they win they will find that brain-dead babble about socialism and big government won't help them much in a deflationary collapse. Because that it what it is, no matter how many times the talking heads chant "recovery" and the performance artists like Beck and Limbaugh chant "it's all Obama's fault".

They can tea party all they want, but it doesn't matter who runs the show, the days of big government and big spending aren't going anywhere. Not unless they want the total collapse to come sooner instead of later.

it worries me that McCain would have anything further to do with Palin

I agree, but in his defense, when you are facing a Stalinist purge, you have to do what you have to do. Or end up like David Frum, apparently coming up with the "Axis of Evil" line isn't enough to prove your conservative cred.

And if we want or need help, its the responsibility of our family, friends, and neighbors to help out.

Wow, I am glad I'm not molenir's neighbor, they would be surprised to learn they are responsible for his health care. Sounds like he is talking about some kind of "socialist" community insurance plan there.

But agree with one thing. It is not government's job to force people to buy health insurance from private health insurance providers. Government's job is to either step in and provide health insurance,or not provide it. It is infrastructure and as "socialist" as building roads, airports, or a military. This idea of individual responsibility, "I can take care of myself and don't need no government running my life" goes back to when the DNA stepped off the boat. I know, I grew up listening to it pretty much everyday. That's all fine, but when you apply it where it doesn't apply, you get a mess like US health care.

You have to ask exactly what mental problems can lead someone to want to attack and kill small children, and commit the worst possible crime a human being can commit? Self-hatred and self-loathing? Well, if he wanted a reason to justify that he now has one. He is a scumbag, it wasn't all just in his head. Why couldn't he have just jumped off a bridge though?

You are young and healthy and want to pay for insurance that reflects that status? Tough. You’ll have to pay for premiums that cover not only you, but also the guy who smokes three packs a day, drink a gallon of whiskey and eats chicken fat off the floor.

And that guy will drop dead from a heart attack and never even make it to the hospital, while Mr. Healthy comes down with an incurable disease and lingers around in the health care system for five years before he kicks the bucket.

Young and healthy is a temporary condition. That is why there is health insurance. And that is why in every other rich country Mr. Healthy pays his money to the national insurance plan, not to some private company who will then pass him back when he is not young and /or healthy. The first way is called insurance, the second is called feeding the kleptocracy.

I've always thought that the real reason for bringing in refueling pit stops years ago was to provide some fake excitement for the cameras, so people wouldn't notice the dullness of the race. The lack of overtaking due to downforce has been a problem for years. With no refueling this year, an unintended consequence might be that more people notice that nothing actually happens in many races.

For all the screaming and shouting, I can't see how this all amounts to much. It gives millions of people who were shutout of the system by cost or pre-existing conditions access to the system (good thing) by allowing them (aka forcing them) to take out private health insurance (not so good). It doesn't seem to do much about the fact that the USA has the world's most bloated and inefficient health care system. No surprise that US health care stocks were up on Monday, but that's what you get in a country where people don't seem to know the difference between socialism and insurance.

And what's with the no more health care for Canadians comment? I think it's great that Americans are willing to subsidize the Canadian system with their "world's best health care", who said anything about that stopping?

I guess there is something to be said for making a completely messed-up system slightly messed-up. But it's clear from this whole long story, that most Americans on the right do not have any idea of what "insurance" is (a pooling of risks for those who don't know) and how it works, and especially don't understand how it works when EVERYBODY is going to eventually make a claim. Pretty ironic considering the Republicans are supposedly the party of business, but not hard to figure out why they choose not to understand. They also don't appear to understand the difference between capitalism and freedom versus corporatism and exploitation. No real capitalist would ever operate a health insurance company, a real insurance company would be a money loser.

Health care is a necessity * not a right. Just like food, shelter and clothing and we *buy those based on we can afford. And necessity is the mother of invention and ingenuity is surely its father.

By accident, you hit the nail on the head. The issue is not health care, the issue is health care insurance. There is no food insurance, shelter insurance, or clothing insurance. People provide for those things according to their means, and those who can't get some sort of help (how much varies according to each country).

If you want health care to be like those other things, then get rid of ALL health insurance. If you don't want old folks kicking the bucket left and right because they can't afford a doctor, then have health insurance. And if the private sector can't provide health insurance without discriminating against customers (which they can't of course, otherwise they would, because the costs are too high) then get rid of them.

Or you can fight for your freedom to subsidize corporate insurance companies and buy nice yachts for their management.

I'll second sf2k's "entitled to comment" post. I assume he is talking about cod, but Pacific salmon is now going the same way too. I guess this is a good time for the old "people who ignore history..." quote, but obviously it got ignored. As the world's economy turns into a zombie and/or outright collapses, this kind of short-term thinking is going to be seen everywhere, not just in fishing, even more. The short-term economic pressures will trump everything else.

And the celebratory tone on last night's NHK news was over-the-top. I really don't care about the opinions of the happy sushi shop owner.

The current problems we face are entirely the fault of the previous administration.

Actually the current problems are entirely the fault of four of the last five administrations.

And instead of flipping out over a trivial health insurance subsidy bill, Americans should really take the time to figure out who their real enemy is. Hint, Limbaugh and Beck aren't going to tell you, because they work for the enemy in the "Divide and Conquer" department. The enemy are those who are destroying your country for personal profit, and they are quite happy to see the serfs battle each other over who pays the doctor bills.

Nice selective logic Pawatan. Disregard the "activist" group because they have an incentive to "wish" their conclusion is true, and ignore the fact that China has a much bigger incentive to "wish" the conclusion is not true, and to forget about the long-term to make money now .

The question stands - on what basis has China concluded that there is no scientific evidence? The article doesn't say. I guess if you want to believe it is all just "activist" BS you could always go to Newfoundland and work as a cod fisherman though. Oh sorry I forget - there are no cod anymore.
