As always the "skeptics" are really just showing they don't understand the question. Yeah, yeah, yeah, climate change has happened throughout the earth's history and is caused by cycles in solar activity. Brilliant work Sherlock for figuring that out. The question is whether human activity has caused additional changes in climate that magnify or deviate from the natural cycle. And seeing as none of the skeptics has a clue what the actual natural cycle is, that makes their skepticism pretty much useless.

Despite how big your egos' are, mankind cannot warm the planet even if he tried.

and your evidence of that would be???

Not quite sure how you fix an insane system by making it more even more insane.

I hope that quote sounds a little less insane in Japanese and that something was lost in translation.

I was thinking the same as Blacklabel when I read the article. I remember seeing something on tv where he said something like "she is the world's most beautiful woman". Thought at the time that that was a pretty weird thing for a coach to say.

In the Ikebukuro case it was actually a woman who jumped and killed a male pedestrian. Took of her shoes and placed them neatly too, but didn't bother to take the time to think about the people walking below. Anyways, very lucky woman in this case if she only fractured her shoulder.

Sarkozy has threatened to walk out of the meeting if the United States and others won’t strike a deal to curb banking bonuses

This could get really interesting if Sarkozy goes through with the threat. Because obviously the US has no intention of doing anything about bonuses. Recession is over, Bernanke said so!

He declared that a bailout-weary public will not break their fall again.

That might be a case of making a promise you can't keep. A lot of people who know much more than anybody on JT think the worst is still to come. Nothing has been fixed and seeing as the banking industry basically owns the US government (Democrat or Republican) nothing will be. All Obama is talking about is making some superficial changes, not dealing with the underlying causes.

And by the way, nobody was forcing banks to lend to low income families. They were lining up to do it, so they could package the loans and sell them on. That was the scam. Check out Angelo Mozilo at Countrywide for one, he took home $160 million in pay in 2005. You think he was "forced" to lend out money and pay himself that salary?

"a system that costs almost twice as much as any other rich country’s, yet yields substandard results and leaves tens of millions of people with no health insurance at all"

That quote comes from the well known left-wing magazine "The Economist". And that's the system that people are marching to keep. Seems pretty strange to me, but I am sure they are all well-informed about health care issues and have examined the situation logically and rationally.

The capitalism vs. socialism argument misses the point. There is no capitalism in the world anymore, and there hasn't been for years. There is only bubbleism, which doesn't create wealth, it only transfers it. Whether or not Hatoyama's policies work, they have nothing to do with either capitalism or socialism. They are attempts to deal with a non-capitalist world after the bubble bursts.

Great posts by timorborder, but one thing he said, "if there was no understanding of the region", is not quite right. Both George H.W. Bush's and (gulp!) Dick Cheney's statements in the 90's showed that they understood the region very well, and accurately predicted what would happen if Iraq were invaded. So there was lots of understanding, but it was just ignored.

beezlebub could also have added that each mercenary, sorry "contractor", is paid a salary far higher than that of US military personnel, and that they are usually ex-US military, meaning the US taxpayer has paid for their training. Great value for the money!!!!

Not sure why an article about another cracker moron turns into "Obama is spending money!!!!!" posts, but this it is all very simple. Your Wal-Mart economy has collapsed, tax revenues have plunged, the Fed is spending trillions to try and keep the balls in the air and save the banks and avoid a complete depression, and the evil one is too much of a wuss to cut any of the Bush era programs and policies that helped get you into this mess. In other words, you are in the same position you would have been in if McCain had won. Get used to it.

The most amazing thing is that anyone can live in Japan and be so completely uninformed and unaware that they don't know you don't leave kids in a car. Stupidity is one thing, but no matter how stupid you are, how you can you avoid knowing that?

He said the questioning “played a role in nearly every capture of al-Qaida members and associates since 2002.”

Well then you should have started doing it in 2001 then. Like when you got that report that got tossed in the trash.

Agree with Scrote's post about no deep ends in pools. As the boy was able to get out of the water himself in the end, it does look like the problem here was probably panic, not an inability to swim.

I'm against the nationalization of any industry

A little late to worry about that. The USA already has the world's largest government run health care system and spends more government money on health care per person than the UK. They then load a private sector health care and insurance system on top of that, which sets the prices and takes its cut, running health care costs up to 16% of GDP.

Obviously a perfectly logical system, and anybody who wants to reform it must be a socialist out to destroy America and freedom.

a country with the world’s costliest system.

Amazing how nobody seems to care about that. I'm sure the USA's Chinese bankers have noticed though, and also noticed that nothing is being done about it.

What Obama is really saying at the end there is the government could drive the private insurance companies out of business if they wanted to but they won't because in America the private sector can always do things better than the government. Especially when the government intentionally ties its hands behind its back. Got to protect the oligarchs and kleptocrats you know.

It would be interesting to see an economic justification for private, for profit health care, instead of political, social and "they are gonna kill my granny and control my life" ones. Seems to me that health care is by definition unprofitable, because it is a product that NOBODY wants to use or buy. They use it because they have to. So the only way you can turn a profit in such a business is by rationing of access and treatment and scamming the system, and that is how you end up with the most expensive system in the world. Because you have to create the cut for the private sector.

USA is the only industrialized country without universal health care. This is because either A) USA is smart and everybody else are stupid socialists, B) the rest of the world is smart and the USA is a country of ungovernable fools. No other explanations for the difference.
