What a horrible way to go. Was once almost in a mid-air collision when a passenger in a single engine 4-seater, and can still remember the sickening feeling when we realized another plane was heading right at us.

More jobs are lost and the unemployment rate goes down. Interesting statistical manipulation going on, just stop counting the people who give up looking for work.

skipthesong, just saying there is a risk/reward calculation in politics, and if you vote against a qualified Hispanic candidate you run the risk of ticking off some Hispanic voters to the point where they won't vote for you in the future. Might happen, might not, but the risk is there. And the reward is what, keeping your supporters happy by putting on a show for them? Like they are going to go anywhere. But what do you expect, Republicans are completely tone deaf now that Bush and Rove are gone, at least they knew how to get where they wanted to go.

So 31 wise white guys voted against her. I wonder how many Hispanics just became permanent, lifelong Democratic party voters because of those 31 votes.

Don't quite follow the sequence, did she flee from the media or the police? Why would the police say they want to question her, they were at her house, unless she took off on them. And agree with tkoind2 above about the real crime, but so far suspected drug use is all he has been arrested for.
Also, I don't remember any other case where the victim's name has been withheld this long. Maybe there have been, but you gotta wonder about why.

I don't know the stats, but I would bet that the number of heroes who get themselves and others killed is a lot higher than the number who overpower the robber, and that explains the policy. This is just another case of survivor bias, just because it worked out this time doesn't mean it is a bright thing to do.

"Weak sales" at Sony is one way to put it. But the 19.2% drop in revenue that is being reported sounds more like plummeting sales than weak sales.

The difference between Matsuzaka and Ichiro is obviously that Ichiro is not a pitcher. The Red Sox have about $100 million sunk into Matsuzaka between his contract and the upfront fee they had to pay to sign him. With that kind of money involved, they've definitely got the right to tell him how to train. As it is now, his "Japanese training methods" have resulted in a guy who is maybe already washed up, and that is what Boston is afraid of. It is also going to make major league teams hesitate more to pay big money for Japanese pitchers in the future, as they are more worried now about paying for damaged goods due to Japanese baseball's continued disregard for basic sports medicine and training.

According to Levi Johnston, who last year was a fine young American but now is not, she quit for the money. The book tours, speaking engagements, TV appearances etc. I would bet that Johnston is right, and that she actually has no intention of even trying to get herself anywhere close to the White House. Why ruin a good thing, just follow the money and get on the gravy train. That would be the smart thing to do, and whatever you think about her politics and personality, she's probably got those kind of "smarts".

Robert McNamara said something along the lines of that one of the main lessons of Vietnam was that you shouldn't start what you can't or won't be willing to finish. That seems to apply here. The question is not about fighting terrorism, the question is if fighting terrorism by trying to remake Afghanistan ever made sense in the first place. And if it didn't there should have been a different strategy.

I have the same problem as HonestDictator, I think it is just that this problem of the dominant native language shows up the most when speaking. You don't have any time to adjust your brain. And I think you don't have to have done much teaching in Japan to know that this idea of brain flexibility makes a lot of sense, especially when you have two unrelated languages like Japanese and English. It helps explain the problem of the permanent beginner for one, and also the poor results of English education in Japan. If the theory is correct it doesn't make much sense to try and teach English to everybody, because a lot of people just can't overcome the effect of their dominant language.

There are no academic theories anywhere in this article. What there are are explanations / rationalizations for short term price movements in stocks and exchange rates, maybe accurate, maybe not. Anyways, the market is up because Goldman Sachs took some of the boatload of US tax dollars they were given and claimed that it was "profit". So the worldwide recession is now over, at least until tomorrow.

Tiger Woods should expect more attention because he is playing with a Japanese teenager???? Excuse me but he is Tiger Woods, he always gets ALL the attention. What planet is the writer living on? Actually, don't answer that, I know the answer. Ishikawa and the media attention he gets are bashed a lot on this site, sometimes unfairly, but this article is just too far over the top.

90292 - my thoughts exactly when I read the article and earlier comments. Another case where a Japanese person comes across as somewhat weird because the nuance and real meaning gets lost a bit in the translation. If it had been translated as "self-conscious" it wouldn't have brought any comments. It's like my favorite case, when people commit crimes because they are "annoyed", as in "I pushed him off the platform because I was annoyed". Makes the crime sound even stranger than it is in the first place.

It's kind of like a real life episode of "I Dream of Jeannie", with of course, John McCain in the role of Major Nelson (he let her out of the bottle), Mitt Romney as Major Healy (he has to get her back in), and Rush Limbaugh as Commander Bellows (he's clueless about everything that's going on). Comic hilarity is sure to ensue, with probably a spectacular implosion for the final episode. Luckily, I get to watch from a safe distance, those who can't have my sympathy.
By the way, I think "scrum" was probably the writer's word, not hers. He is in the media, so he is an elitist you know.

Read or saw somewhere that the top people in the Russian military consider the western countries completely nuts for allowing themselves to get sucked into Afghanistan. Their attitude is along the lines of "weren't you paying attention to what happened to us?"

Vast majority of the deficit spending under Obama comes from the continuation of Bush administration programs and policies. Iraq/Afghanistan, bank bailouts, effects of Bush tax cuts etc. Criticize the new spending programs all you want, but they are a minor part of the overall mess.
