Agree with all the comments about the abysmal Japanese media. But there is genuine interest in Ishikawa in the world media as a potential future star, so have to separate the player from the hype. There will be at least two other teenagers at the Masters, the Korean-New Zealand guy mentioned above and another from Northern Ireland. We'll see how he matches up and how the Japanese media covers it, or if Ishikawa does poorly, doesn't cover it.

Actually, we're just wondering why you only started to worry about holding your government accountable about five weeks ago.
Whether or not you are wiped out (and I sincerely hope you are not) will have nothing to do with Obama opening his mouth or not. That train left the station long, long before he showed up.

Two points - WWII was a massive government spending project, which by Republican ideology should have bankrupted the USA. It is not evidence that the New Deal was a failure, but it could mean the New Deal was not big enough. And about non-USA taxpayers having no say. Just ask the question. Why did house prices not go up in Japan, a country with an trade surplus, but went way up in the USA, a country with a deficit? Whose money do you think you were blowing?

I second that Smith. It's hilarious to read Americans complaining about people who can't pay the mortgage or complaining about the government spending money. Where have they been the last thirty years? For the last thirty years the great free market American economy has been subsidized by the rest of the world. The rest of the world paid for twenty years of "fiscally responsible" Republican administrations (one of the greatest oxymorons in history), countries distorted their domestic economies in order to export to the "rich" Americans (see Japan - dispatch workers), and most importantly bought the debt of Americans through the wonders of debt securitization. And the money America received for its debt was then put back into their financial system to create more "wealth" and of course debt which it then sold all over again.
Now the bubble has burst and America can't sell its debt anymore to keep the machine running - except of course government debt to countries that can't afford to see the machine stop. And surprise surprise, the great American free market system can't pay the debt back either. It's America that turns out to not be able to pay the mortgage.
If Americans want to ignore all that reality, I guess that is their business. Unfortunately they may have screwed things up for everybody else too, not just themselves.

Right-wing mythology and fantasy. Take a look at the per capita GDP figures by state, you will see what color the welfare states are.
As for keeping with the principles that made the USA great, you're about thirty years too late.

"Reagan proved deficits don't matter" - Dick Cheney, 2002
So nothing to worry about then. Seriously though - "People paying attention will not be so easily fooled." No offense, but I advise you to start following your own advice. The idea that if China stops lending your government will start acting fiscally responsibly is not a comment from someone paying attention.

Considering that these job losses are at companies that make things to export to the USA, I guess that means you are talking about American laziness and immorality. If so, you are right.

What is obvious (but apparently only to me) is that without a clear understanding of the root financial cause of the mess there won't be any getting out of it. But most of what I see is a lot of people trying to promote and protect their own political and economic ideologies, mythologies, and biases. Just a lot of noise, nothing more. Things like "Did the New Deal end the Great Depression or make it worse?" Who the bleep cares, this is 2009 and a whole other crisis. As for the people who the author says say we should sit back and wait for the economy to re-balance itself, well they might not feel so sure about that when they wake up back in 1982 in a world with such post-82 goodies like globalization, outsoucing, a hollowed industrial base, a disappearing middle class and all the other stuff whose negative effects have been covered over by the bubble.

Nope, but they might have kept it from collapsing!!!
About the article, if the original problem was that the Japanese labor market was too inflexible compared to other countries, then they should have changed the labor laws. Guess that would have been too "difficult", so they set up this ridiculous system instead to get around their own laws. Now Japan is paying for that kind of stupidity.

Falling house prices affect the value of everybody's house. They don't care if the borrower was responsible or irresponsible.

While it is, as always, entertaining reading all these posts arguing over American tribal politics and anti-government economic mythology, it is all kind of missing the point. The stimulus bill has been signed for one reason only - to try and compensate for the collapse of the American financial system. It is looking more and more like the US system, and much of the world's financial system, was nothing more that an elaborate money laundering machine creating trillions of fake wealth. Whether or not the stimulus is a waste of money can be debated, but it is not the real issue. And that real issue was not caused by Obama, Bush, Democrats, or Republicans. The causes are much deeper and scarier than that.

Not a single mention of Nancy Pelosi in this article, and yet two comments bashing her. If people are going to parrot Republican talking points on JT, can you at least take the time to search the article and check that your target is actually in there somewhere.

Why are you guys talking about bankrupting the nation and screwing up the process in the present tense, like they are things that are going to happen? You are a little behind the curve, bankrupted and screwed up is how things already are, so no need to worry about it now. Worry about what to do next.

If it wasn't for the fact that I live in a country that has foolishly built its entire economy around exporting stuff to the USA, I would be able to get a lot more enjoyment from watching this train wreck. All that this stimulus "debate" has shown is that the Republicans are interested only in playing pin the blame on the donkey, seem completely clueless about what is actually going on, and are generally useless. Obama and the Democrats should just drop all the touchy-feely bipartisan crap, and sink or swim on their own.

I guess "global economic meltdown" doesn't make it as a good reason then. As they say, a high tide lifts all boats, and it is easy to claim you are up there because you are a better boat. But in the industrialized countries, nobody under the age of 45 knows what happens to their boat when the tide goes out. Unfortunately, they are probably going to find out soon.
