Not sure why the comment above has a certain R word in quotes. That is the only place where the word shows up on this entire page, going all the way back to the first comment. But what do I know, I got a reading comprehension problem. I thought tourists where banned from ALL of Tsukiji, hehe.

Ok, fair enough. But the points being made, and not only on that one post but by others too, is that Japanese attitudes towards foreigners make it an unattractive destination compared to a place like Thailand. And that the banning of tourists from Tsukiji is a symptom of that problem. Both points might or might not be true, but whether they are or not has nothing to do with how many self-rightous foreigners there are in Japan.

From the Dan Wetzel column on Yahoo - "you’d have to agree that anyone who survives a double-homicide trial has to be a fool to get a parking ticket, let alone have anything to do with an armed robbery." That sums it up I think.

the worldwide financial crisis could force Honda to shut down the racing team if a new sponsor is not found quickly, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said at a media conference in Tokyo.

That should read "buyer" not "new sponsor". Unless he means they are willing to give the team away to anybody willing to cover (sponsor) the operating costs. Wow! Anyways, if this is the right move for Honda, then it is likely the right move for Toyota too. And then BMW, and Renault, and...

Canadian politics is admittedly very boring.

Don't think that is actually true in this case, but it is the exception that proves the rule. For example it is the lead article on The Economist's website, with the headline "A most un-Canadian caper". They are surprised that something not boring has happened in "this normally placid country". Judging from the passionate debate here on this site, "placid" is for sure the right word too. Hooray for "Placidity", if that is a word!!!!

As well in Japan you will come across self-rightous foreigners...

Aha!!! The old "Don't listen to him because he is a self-rightous, Japan-bashing, hater" argument, with a dash of foreigner bashing on top, including the euphemistic use of the term "the teaching field". Me thinks "the realist's" somewhat over the top post may have struck a nerve.

Why do people buy stuff they can't afford?

A better question is why do people lend money to other people to buy stuff the other people can't afford? The answer is because that is how the scam works. Or I should say "worked".

Let's see. Hundreds of people want to visit my place of business everyday, and no advertising required. I could a)show some entrpreneurial spirit and figure out how to make some money off them, or b)ban them as they get in the way, and hire guards to keep them away. I would choose "b" myself, but then I am a pretty lazy guy. "A" would be too troublesome!

Gates is part of the Papa Bush, Scowcroft, Powell crew, not the neo-cons. The only reason he was Bush's defense secretary is that they needed somebody competent to clean up the mess caused by Rumsfeld. When Obama talks about change, one thing he means is that he will appoint competent, intelligent, and qualified people from the start instead of ideological hacks like Dubya did. That means Gates was a totally predictable choice. Anybody, right or left, who doesn't know that just ain't been paying attention.

rid jr - are you saying that The Last Samurai, Black Rain, Mr. Baseball, etc. would have been better movies with a Japanese actor playing the role of the Caucasian guy in Japan??? About accents and English ability, if it fits what the character's accent and ability should be, then no problem, even if memorized phonetically. If not, then thepro is right. In the worst case it can really screw up the movie. Anybody remember "Snow Falling on Cedars"?

Quick search of "Goolsbee" and "dithering" shows sarge was right in his most recent post, Goolsbee was talking about the Bush administration. I thought he was comparing the Obama transition to the Clinton transition. Personally, if he was talking about Bush, I don't think dithering is the right word or particularly fair. The Bush administration has simply been trying to deal with something they didn't see coming (whether they should have seen it coming is another question). Does make sarge's original post of "why has there been dithering up until now?" look a bit odd though.

Plan announced late on a Sunday night, just like with Bear Stearns. In other words, they were likely afraid of what might happen if they opened the market today without an announced plan. Should be an interesting day.

“We’re out with the dithering. We’re in with a bang.”

And Sarge asked "why was there dithering up until now?" Actually, I don't think he was referring to the Obama transition. He was talking about previous administrations, and in particular Clinton's in 1992. Surprised that sarge missed that not so subtle dig at his favorite president, especially coming from a Democrat.

JohnBecker makes a good point. Most Americans don't own guns and it is not the Wild West. And for non-Americans who can't understand the USA's gun laws, I'll take a crack and say I think it is a very important point. Most Americans have no direct personal experience with gun violence. And when you have no experience of the reality of something it is much easier, for some people at least, to believe in the fantasy. Myself, I have been there when some idiot decided that he needed to pull out a gun to settle a situation and have seen what it is like. Nobody killed but that was more luck than anything else. So the point is, when you hear somebody with an anti-gun control position, he probably doesn't know what he is talking about. Not saying his position is wrong - just that his position isn't backed up by any experience. He is just living in fantasy land.

No doubt some poster is going to turn up here soon enough saying that the "liberal" media and the above posters are all idiots, that the private jet thing has been blown out of proportion, that the money involved is a drop in the bucket, people are making a mountain out of a molehill etc., etc. So I'll say it first and get it out of the way. And the thing is they will probably be right (except about the idiots thing of course). But the sheer stupidity required to fall into this trap is unfathomable. Havn't they ever heard of public relations? Don't they have staff whose job it is to promote and protect the company's image who should have advised them to fly commercial? This is like driving your Ferrari to pick up your unemployment cheque. Nobody would be that stupid.

So why can't the clever Europeans or the Chinese leapfrog ahead of us? What is stopping them?

hmm, a 20th century history of blowing things up in two wars and a communist revolution may just mean the USA had a head start.

Free-market capitalism is far more than an economic theory. It is the engine of social mobility — the highway to the American Dream.

Nonsense. It is an economic theory. A very good one too, but it is not a religion and there is nothing inherently "American" about it either. But don't worry folks, America was great, has always been great, and so will continue to be great. The sun shall never set on the British Empire!!!!!

“The crisis was not a failure of the free market system,” Bush said.

George got that right actually. It was a failure of the AMERICAN free market system. The Friedman/Greenspan/Reagan/Bush/Republican system that attempted to impose American mythology on capitalism and then attempted, to borrow a favorite phrase of right-wing nutjobs everywhere, to ram their system down everybody else's throats. They gave us a blind belief in the magical powers of free markets, a dismantling of regulation and oversight, a hatred of all things "socialist", and a philosophy of don't tax but spend, baby, spend. And don't forget wage arbitrage based "free trade". None of which have any place in a true free market capitalist system.

Wow, I forgot all about America's long history of counter revolution. Anyways, I'll just point out that the last time The Republicans were left holding the bag when the economy collapsed, it took them 20 years to win the presidency again, and to do that they had to run a guy named Eisenhower. You might have heard of him. He had a little executive experience running things too, just like Governor Palin does. Perhaps in a slightly more difficult job though. I think 20 years would make a good over/under number this time too. I am taking the over myself.

Right wing accusations of left wing media bias have been around forever, and not just in the USA. But even if sailwind is correct and the media was "in the tank for Obama", the response is so what. Why don't you look at a country like Russia to see what media bias means. Putin's views are in the media, Kasparov's are not. Not exactly the case in the USA, where Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter (to name just three) are all widely distributed and easily accessable. Just because some media outlets have a liberal bias doesn't mean the US media as a whole is biased. All views have an outlet. You also have a chicken and egg problem. Media organizations are profit maximizing companies who respond to what their customers want. Instead of media bias influencing voters, you could also have voter bias influencing the media. And if you look at it like that then of course "almost all major media outlets tilt to the left" - it is a sign that the Republicans are too far to the right of where they need to be to win. Or at least win without having to use risky stategies. Anyways, I don't get why so many Republicans want to see media bias, they should be really hoping that it doesn't actually exist, because they are going to need all the help they can get.
