The yen is strong now but I cant see this lasting at some point Japan is going to do a swan dive & the yen will plummet, I mean Japan is as bad off as Greece & Italy, yet here we are. The main difference is most debt is owned by locals, but even that isnt going to prevent reality from settling in here at some point.

Right now Japan is in a totally bizarre situation wrt the yens "strength", with J-companies fleeing at the rate they are at some point its going to get volitile, watch out there folks!

This tobashi phenomenon has been around since the 80s & the biggest offender is the govt, they shuffle the countries debt to far flung corners & forget about it, its an extremely common occurence, one prime example is JR, just try to figure out how much in debt it was before it was privitized, and even now I bet they cant get a decent figure on its current debts etc.

Accountring in this country is a giant black hole, any foreign companies thinking about M&A stuff here had better have one hell of an awesome forensic pile of accountants to have a hope in hell of getting decent figures, its just the way it is, shoganai ne!

The pessimist would say there have been similar scandals in the past that have not led to any sort of systemic change.

I believe many of them stick to their job, because it gives them meaning or purpose in their life, as many people who grew up before or during the WWII don't have hobbies, their job is their life, however sad/insane it sounds to non-Japanese people.

I agree, and thats why there are a lot of sad sad people & families out there, me I wud rather be homeless than one of these zombies you describe, being homeless you wud have more freedom & fulfilment as well, time for the old geezer to get outta dodge!

A few years ago I was driving on the Tomei. I was driving fast, very fast, well and truly over the speed limit. We approached Hon Atsugi and so I moved in to the outside lane to allow any traffic to filter on. A car came on to the empty expressway and moved into the outside lane where I was travelling. I was the only car on the road and I had no choice to move into the middle lane. If I'd tried to have breaked I would have gone through that car. It would have killed me and would have ruined his day.

Some will rightly say that I was at fault for driving too fast. It's somewhat surprising that at least one other would argue that that driver had the right to move to the outside lane as he wasn't breaking the law.

    Heda,

I am pretty sure there are other terms than just speeding & consequences as well for what you described above, for example there are: Reckless Endangerment or Dangerous Driving.

Clearly in your example you were in the wrong as you admit, clearly the other driver wasnt watching, which illustrates another problem I see with lots of drivers in Japan, when drivers check other cars around them many just glance(ie get the equivalent of a photograph), when they shud be looking longer in order to judge speed, acceleration etc.

That said I think any car rear ending another is going to get most of the blame because the laws thinking imo is that you need to allow yrself enough time & space to stop to avoid ANY collision, if you dont your at fault, thats how I see things play out in Japan.

Another factor that sometimes dictates outcome is size, ie the larger vehicle can sometimes take more blame even though it might be clear that they may not have even done ANYTHING wrong at all. The whole thing about assesing blame in Japan can involve a great deal of voodoo!

    Heda & everyone else,

Most J-drivers cannot master the simple task of properly using left/right turn signals, so hoping they could comprehend the concept of passing lanes on a multilane highway is clearly asking WAY to much for most drivers here & my experience bears this out every day I drive.

A real joy is coming to a 4-way stop, friggin chaos in this country!

Throw in the overuse of video games & driving anywhere here can be a quirky, dangerous proppsition!

    escapeartist,

As Smith correctly points out, Japanese act the way they do simply because they dont like criticism. I have to watch speaking out while watching the news while the wife is around as she sometimes flies off the handle when I fire some criticism, & thats even when she AGREES WITH ME!

I think this line of thought/reaction goes a long way to explaining why business & govt get away with so much is that the locals just dont like voicing criticism, although that is changing some, BUT I can guarantee Japanese DO NOT like to hear us gaijin criticise, again even if they agree 100%, its a bizarre world here, sometimes to keep the piece you have to zip those lips & come onto jt to let loose LOL!

A desalination plant is for making salt water into fresh water if I have not gone insane, so, by that logic isnt the water leaking into the ocean, drawn from there in the first place............

Clearly its not just the above, anyone wanna take a stab at what is really happening with this desalination plant?

these a-hole drivers zip around all lanes indiscriminantly so yr advice dont mean squat, me I stick to the left as much as possible just in the hopes of avoiding these crappy drivers, can be hard to do in this country as many of these nutjobs cant distinguish between video games & reality, and, its not just on highways!

my paper this morning said 10 were taken to hospital & one benz was oncoming, ie not part of this stupid convoy

Anyone who drives here has seen groups driving, harleys, bikes in general, various old classic cars etc etc, anytime you have that the pressure to KEEP UP can & does lead to dangerous situations, sport cars groups are clearly the worst & most dangerous.

This past July my brother & son visited, on the highway in the oppposite direction about 20-25 sports cars, colours of the rainbow went ripping by & not a cheap porche in the bunch, I had to put old newspapapers under those two as they are car nuts & had just recd a massive overdose LOL!

Idiots, the govt shud have banned planting rice & any veggies in ALL of Fukushima as a matter of course for this season, so it cud have concentrated on affects outside the prefecture, THEN start on Fukushima, I mean it was patently obvious tons of radioactive stuff was hitting Fukushima.

And no we have people who have been eating poisoned food for months, the rice was basically UNTESTED & released on the markets & then here & there they did a bit of testing & low & behold, the fields shud have NEVER been sown this year! What on monstrous, heinious screwup!

The govt clearly just does not care a single tiny bit about its people, all parties shud resign enmasse & NEVER get back in the game, we are still a long way from knowing the truth about how much we all are being exposed to

@GW that is highly debatable. My building was built this year according to the latest safety standards

    Hans,

I sincerely hope you are in yr building if Tokyo gets hit with a big one head on & you survive, but perhaps you need to put some more thought into it as Tokyo is more than one building, hope none of the nearby ones falls into yours, hope the fires that break out dont engulf yours, etc etc

And btw not all buildings out in the inaka are old haha, mine is about 5yrs & made of big honking logs & re-inforced to boot, she is steady as a rock! And I am up on the high ground so shud hopefully be ok but as we saw on 3/11 nothing is absolute but my chances I believe are better than in the big smoke. But pls remember I wish no harm to anyone.

While I agree & have done many things on a personal level to get the hell outta Tokyo, but until the locals realize, if thats even possible, that they cud make their lives easier, more fufilling, less stressfull by spreading things out it wont change & I have long given up caring, why, because if the locals dont care about their own well being, why shud I.

I just take care of my own, it can be done & let me just say, its definitely the way to go.

And like borscht I have seen this same article many many times over my 2+decades here!

That said Peter, I hope the idiots that run this asylum called Japan hear & heed your call, would make Japan a better place for all, but I dont think thats what the locals want............. whatever
