I am not sure if you know what cherry picked means, if not(sorry if you do understand) it means be very selective in yr analysis/thinking, not seeing more of whats going on.
I dont dispute that Japans high end tech is awesome, it is! BUT look at Sharpe for example they were ranting & raving about new screen technology that very quickly simply became a commodity, we see this time & time again. The time J-companies can profit from this high tech is quite short. J-companies are on the verge of giving up on TVs altogether, its a pattern it seems you choose to ignore.
And come on you cant seriously think high tech companies can keep ALL OF JAPAN afloat? Japan has been in 20yrs of decline at least, it isnt getting better its getting worse.
If Japan doesnt re-think its ways of living, doing business etc, it will (& is) continue its downward spiral.
Bottom line is govt & business MUST re-think everything, if ministry budgets dont come down & value increased we are all set to suffer BIGTIME.
Now I realize other countries have same/similar & different problems that need tackled, but the topic here is Japan. I dont want to come off sounding mean, I am just calling it as I have seen it, point blank Japan has declined in a BIG way since I first landed here in 91, the evidence is everywhere, again take off those blinkers(race horse wear them) & you will see what is so obvious to many of us on jt!

I think your good at cherry picking & day dreaming, if you think Japan is fine now, well I guess all I can recommend is take off those blinkers you need to broaden your view of the world & whats been happening, trust me Japan is far from imune to whats going to hit us all.
And when it hits WE ALL will hurt SEVERELY, then over time & possibly war, recovery, but Japan isnt good at that so I see Japans future as one that wont really recover next time round, if it remains soverign nation anyway.

mostly fun, normal adjustments we all make to some degree to fit in a bit &get along.
I too resist being taken too far to the Japanese side, I guess if your escaping where you came from, but if not I think its healthy to do as the Romans & also NOT do as the Romans do, helps one(or me anyway) keep their sanity.
Like others a HUGE LOSS in Japan is the lack of social life in many many aspects, I see my nephews that are a 12-14hr plane ride away more than my wifes brothers kids in Japan( their son is about 6yrs old & I havent even seen the little bugger......) they arent old enough to travel, they dont want us to stay over...........I have all but given up on them, last time we met was when my FIL died, guess the next will be when my MIL passes, but she is genki as hell so it cud be another decade or 2 away. THATS messed up.
I dont think many Japanese realize they only get one life, snooze & you lose, & sadly many here lose big time!

Come on Noda call out that SOB tanigaki & roast him & the ldp for all to see!
Then CUT all ministries budgets by 15%(20% to foreign & construction ministries!), there is tons of amakuari, KB, slush funds, buried frigging treasure as they call it EVERYWHERE!
Use the above saving to pay down debt, help Tohoku.
And get the damned consumption tax increased PRONTO, & account for every friggin YEN to show its going to Tohoku & pensions etc(if you do this I might even join the pension system), anyone who tries to pilfer gets publically FIRED!
There you go, there is Japans NEW START, now stop pussy footing around!

I remember about 10yrs ago I realized I had to somehow quit the Chiba-Tokyo commute, it got to the point where I had to have a few in me to get on the train to go home, luckily I made some changes now I am even farther from Tokyo & work from home or a 20min drive to my office, so now I look fwd to going to Tokyo, back 10-15yrs ago I frigging dreaded it, got tired of the zoombies around me & made a change, I highly recomend it!

JLee nailed ALL of the J-media toe the govt lines, print lies, dont investigate, with so many only able to read & undersatnd Japanese the media has a powerfull hold on the masses, who sadly all too often digest it all hook line & sinker, censorship, propaganda, & "news" all year long.
Another thing it illustrates is how Japan lives in both the present & past at the same time, sometimes its kind of nice, sometimes it just defies rational thought
