‘‘I have no intention of running away.’’

It's not really Aso running away, but more like getting a comically large boot in the rear as he flies out the door.

Seriously, it's impossible for the DPJ to do a worse job than the LDP and Aso cabinet.

three largest metropolitan areas and found nothing encouraging to report whatsoever.

The bubble popped a long time ago people. It's too bad the lost years are continuing into a global recession, but you know who could've made things better by not neglecting domestic markets? The J-gov.

Do you know who didn't make things better? The J-gov.

“We had to speak in English when we exchanged rings, and I was pretty embarrassed.”

Why is speaking English embarrassing? I do it all the time. Alternatively, I speak Japanese all the time, even in front of a crowd, and never have I been embarrassed.

This was a special wedding day event marking the rest of their lives together, not a variety show.

The Gundam robot symbolizes the advanced technology for which Japan is famous

The Gundam robot symbolizes imagination, the popularity of anime and manga, and science fiction. Who is this person trying to fool?

But, if it inspires people to change Tokyo from gunmetal grey and dystopia brown to a better shade of green, then great; build a DeathScythe Gundam next to it to speed things up.

quarantined after two of their Japanese tutors were diagnosed with swine flu.

I'm loving this "soft power" Japan wants. Let's quarantine friends of the 20 students, and their friends, and their friends, and...heck, just quarantine the whole darn country

Wow. Could you imagine the kind of backlash if Sarah Palin was Vice President of America? Calling herself a victim and resigning before her term is up (in a time of DIRE need) is irresponsible for one in a position of leadership, and she has aspirations of a 'higher calling' as well? I hope those callings are far away from Republicans, for their sake.

gives advice on their studies to secure a steady income in the future – an effort that backfired. From the family’s perspective, he is meddling in affairs he was never involved in until then, thus creating a rift in the home and feeling alienated.

Wh-what? Since when does a father's help on childrens' studies constitute as meddling and alienation?

    I like how the article suggests more spousal interactions after giving examples on how these said interactions are met with alienation, disdain, and how it's unbearable;

I also like how this article emphasizes more communication with wives instead of more communication in the family itself as if only the husband has the means to do anything, like start a conversation. I think this strain goes much deeper than only "in the family".

starting to act as a sales agent for Flet’s Hikari services in 10 prefectures in February. The company now plans to increase the prefectures to 34 this month and to all 47 in Japan on July 1.

So this means, since today is July 2nd, as of yesterday they've already got all 47 prefectures now?

The poster says “NO! DRUG” in English in a large white font, and underneath it says “dame, zettai”

I think this is actually supposed to be a 4 letter sentence: "NO! DRUG dame, zettai" or "NO! This singular DRUG is no good, under any circumstances"

It kinda makes more sense this way, even though it uses English and Japanese mish-mash in the one sentence. I'm a bit concerned this came from the Ministry of Education, no less.

30061015: I think the world is trying to make NK back off w/o casualties, because NK has to be the 1st offender and make the first strike in this situation before they're ended once and for all.

Unfortunately, I agree that this does give them time to research and enrich materials, but it also gives time for other countries to prepare, research, defend, and, when the time's right, strike.

An interesting comment for Japan. Isn't there anything the victims' families can do? What's the name of the driving school?

pawatan: Teenagers certainly do not NEED a message to do crime, but you have to agree this "slap-on-the-wrist" doesn't help. They had no intention of confessing until caught, so how much money/vehicles do they have to steal to be held responsible for their actions? How about their parents being held responsible? Not necessarily jail, but a fine, community service, or similar corrective action is acceptable.

If this "miscarriage of justice" is national news then this country is in much better shape than I thought.

Perhaps it's in worse shape. Perhaps it's a ploy to divert your eyes from the BIG crimes. Perhaps this is the J-police displaying that they are capable of catching teenagers wearing hot pink in broad daylight.

Maybe it doesn't work that way in Japanese law.

Can you imagine being robbed, then being told by the police you can't press charges because they don't want to? I'm no Master of Law, but doesn't that seem odd?

alohajapan: No, I think the justice system would still find some other person or way to make them look stupid.

How many innocents have been forced/starved/beaten into confessions and been put to death? I'll wager at least 1, and that's one too many. If you abolish the death penalty, you run the risk of overcrowding of Japanese prisons; seems as though some even WANT to be arrested for food and shelter. Abolishing the death penalty will also not improve the skill, insight, and prowess of J-police, they'll likely be terrible forever.

So what to do? Can you trust the Japanese justice system, where forced confessions still abound? Personally, I'd be 100% willing to risk abolishing the death penalty if only to save a few innocent lives.

pawatan: It makes headlines on Japan Today because of unfair treatment from the police. Basically these girls got off scott-free for premeditated petty theft, sending the wrong message to teenagers in Japan. If they were 2 boys, they would be under normal punishment. Shouldn't it really be the woman who chooses to press charges, and not the police?!

Alternatively, if those girls were non-Japanese they'd most likely be tried normally. We all are not equal under the law, which is to be expected anywhere, but here in Japan it's not even attempted to be "swept under the rug"

Um....well, uh....about Tsubasa and the article, then. She has a few books out, if I recall correctly; they mostly detail about make-up application and then pictures of herself frolicking after said application, and seems to be really REALLY popular with the young ladies aged about 14-30 here. It was only a matter of time before she was in your cell phones too frolicking about.

Totally agree ca1ic0cat, as long as there're people, there will be "preaching". It's a fact that ALL countries have their own arm-chair critics and forum posters. It's not new or threatening, but sometimes mildly irritating...however, like a mosquito bite, if you intentionally pick at it, while momentarily satisfying to quell the irritation, it'll only get worse until there's a permanent scar. So I encourage "preaching" (aka construcive criticism) because it's interesting to hear people's opinions, educated or not, and their reactions when you counter-argue. This article's "Preaching" about not "preaching" about Japan.

To be honest this article's chock full of out-of-context examples, and the comparison of Japan to North Korea, India, prewar Britain, etc.?? I chuckled and this article lost about 90% of its credibility from that point onward.
