None; don't; and nothing, you should leave and go to the nearest bar to drink. 2499 yen for a desperate machine, or ask guy friends for free?

shiuu: It takes Japanese people 3-4 years to communicate on an elementary level and even older Japanese STILL use dictionaries from time to time on various governmental documents. Do not confuse arrogance with inability; even with many loan words Japanese is a difficult language for native English speakers.
I can report first-hand that this is true, at least with China, Taiwan, and the Phillipines. If China continues on it's current path (and Japan on it's current path) China will no doubt overcome Japan, and not just economically.
As much as I love Japan, I can't help but feel fatalist articles like this truly foreshadow that Japan will willingly disappear from the world.

This is the eye-catcher, eh? Like ignoring things is anything new in Japan, especially in the hypnotically alluring Pachinko Parlor, where all senses are numb and there exists only...Pachinko: the Goddess of smoky rooms and tiny balls.

Have to agree with cleo:
Yes, Japan has a xenophobia problem: I've been called a gorilla to my face by cackling teens and followed around by old men in public spouting indecent language...that's a problem of ignorance, which you can find anywhere, and not just Japan. Anyone could turn this and easily pull the racism card.
Herein lies the problem. A hyperbole no doubt. It's a simple question, new to the asker, hum-drum to the answerer. Is it racism to be curious? Perhaps in very poor taste to ask, but they're not saying anything offensive. If "Haafu" really bothers you, say "You mean mixed? Yes, I'm mixed" or whatever word you deem non-offensive. 1,000 people want to know more about you, and the defensive reaction of the author, fleeing to a clique, certainly prevented any potential for meaningful friendships or education of what's politically correct.
They could certainly say/ask/do much worse.
Certainly not all 1,000 locals made it a point to explain the the author didn't belong. Did they specifically say "He doesn't belong!" or something, or did they say something the author interpreted as you didn't belong? Not specified in this article.
Ignorance abounds in Japan (particulary in politics), but this article is just whiny and people here are clinging to that, screaming "everyone's racist!" and searching for reasons to be a victim. The sheer number of posts reflect this.
Japanese bully and discriminate themselves just as much and just as foolishly (by gender, beauty, family, and bloodtype anyone?).
Because no one else on the planet can do this right? This statement alone removes credibility from the author.

'Gokusen' is very well done as far as Japanese dramas go.
It should continue with Yukie Nakama becoming a college professor!
Call it 'Daigokusen'! Paycheck please!

seesaw: Unfortunately, this is Japan and it's near impossible for a 60 year old woman to walk out on her husband and move on with her life. Divorce is hardly an option in Japan, despite many men being available.
Her avenue of escape was years ago, since she said she's been unhappy for a long time, but decided to stick with it. At 60 she probably felt trapped.
Very sad her decision resulted in the loss of life and family.

Leave it to Google to bring people together. I'm also mixed (though zero Japanese) and met with very similar personal questions during my time in America (though Americans usually polite enough to inquire beforehand if their questions are crossing the line); however, in Japan I'm just lumped into the foreigner demographic.
From my experiences in Japan, it's the older generation (over 50) and country dwellers that typically alienate and they make up the vast majority of the population (exceptions exist, of course). I've had old men follow me around the train station spouting unhealthy things at me before. I've had teenage hicks call me a gorilla to my face, perhaps expecting me to not understand.
Like the author, it's the friends you make here and the numerous new experiences that cushion the blow. For every alienating encounter and ignorant question there's 3 other legitimately interested people or others seeking true friendship in Japan.

smithinjapan: Perhaps hasty in my previous comment, but the alternative is loss of (world-wide) security until NK is able to fire a missle anywhere, able to master the tech of putting a nuclear warhead on a missile, makes a calculated error and hits/irradiates someplace important.
Fear and cater a belligerent nation that ignores treaties and proven to be untrustworthy as it advances military prowess, or engage in very risky actions to suppress it before discovering how to miniaturize a nuclear warhead on a missile? Never simple

Normally I wouldn't say this about any country, but why not just take down NK instead of appeasing them? Parasitic and uncooperative, seeking only to undo the peace everyone's working so hard to maintain. NK can and will continue testing missiles as long as it receives attention.
They're not helping anyone, have lied about things such as the topic of this article, have no true allies to speak of, and surrounded by peace-seeking countries not interested in launching missiles and very concerned about their own safety. I guarantee Asia will be a better place once NK has been put down, preferably by a joint effort of all Eastern and Western countries.
It's only a matter of time before NK lies again or makes an error and destroys something important.

IchyaWarFare: We can refuse to watch this ethnocentric drivel! It's nice to be proud of Ishikawa, but I want see a game and not the same guy doing the same shot with the same commentary over and over again! Watch or read the highlights on sites like youtube, or any other FREE online media, at any time. I don't have a TV, and I can still watch the Tour.

Good for the harmony of Japan! Share jobs, share the pay, share time with the family. Now becoming a true country of sharing.
Heaven forbid J-children have a healthy relationship with their father. Is it really that big of an obstacle to be included here? Would the wife rather the husband go out and squander their money at pachinko or engage in an affair at soapland? Or, perish the thought, have a healthy sex life (marriage) together after children. Apparently so...
Truly exasperating to hear "shoganai" so often. Can't think of anything better (less pathetic sounding) to say? Like, "I tried everything I could and this was the best option for me and everyone else."

Never going to happen, as long people are willing to watch such programs. Media is, after all is said and done, a business.
It's the people who need to move beyond and think for themselves, instead of wrapping around every word spouted from their televisions. Unfortuantely, the Japanese culture itself is built upon not thinking for yourself, but going with the flow.
As such, getting *Beyond a world of stereotypes * would require a massive upheaval and reformation (or everyone saving for 10 years for a trip around the world) and such an isolated society like Japan isn't capable of it, at this time. We could start with foreigners not reinforcing worn-out stereotypes anymore on television...you know who you are!
