I suspect the police have nothing to go on in regards to the man's identity if they are trying to trace the purchase of his Chinese shoes. He could be anywhere in the world by now.
Sometimes I think that some people just tell the surveyer what they think they should say rather than what they actually feel. I would imagine that a lot of people feel they should put their family first, but they are not in a position to be able to do it.

I was reading the comments about this on Mixi. (Japanese networking site) The general Japanese public are very upset about it. Over 500 angry posts in regard to it.
