    Sad story, but I wouldn't live on the 11th floor with pets, let alone kids.

    Common sense may well say that; but this is Japan.

    Haha, so true. I can start the day with a smile now!!

    Simply unbelievable that the police in this country are incapable of filtering out mental problems among their own recruits.

    They do filter them... the applicants with mental issues get the job!!

    @Yuri

    This is ONE person and not all Japanese. He is NOT even a national politician but China blames all Japan for the mouth of a single person. I just do not see peace in the future. I think if China could land troops on Okinawa, they will kill all of us. It makes me sad that my cousins in China hate us so much. I do not hate them in return.

    You are correct, this was a comment by one person, not all Japanese think this way. Sadly, this particular idiot is in a position of responsibility and he should know better, but this is Japan. You do however go on to say "my cousins in China hate us so much", some of them maybe, certainly not all of them.

    wasn't there recently some issue like this about the royals in the uk?

    The UK system just changed to give equal status to female heirs to the throne. Previously males had priority even if they had an older sister.

    Japan's slide into mediocrity and irrelevance, which is clearly underway, will only accelerate. Enjoy the ride down while you steadfastly defend fraud and xenophobia.

    Most accurate description I've read for a while.

    The islands were actually classed as Japanese in Korean text books before WW2. The fighting over ownership only started after they discovered the riches in the land surrounding said islands.

    The whole of Korea was classed as Japanese before WW2, by the Japanese who invaded some years before

    @drlucifer I think the Softbank package is cheap. I switched from AU a few years ago to get the iphone, my monthly bill reduced drastically as a result. I mostly use it for mail and web browsing, but also the calls are cheap or free as my wife and friends mostly use Softbank too. Haven't checked AU's plan recently though. AU will need to offer a good deal, not just the promise of a shiny new iPhone 5. As for phone reception, I couldn't find any difference between the two.

    There is: setting the child locks. Keeping the A/C on. Locking the door. Having the child secured in a child seat.

    A/C needs engine running, which means key in the ignition (usually)..... so how do you lock the doors?

    According to the Oita Prefectural Police Department, the mother was gone for only 3 minutes (by analysis of the security cameras).

    Security cameras which don't cover car parking areas obviously. I can understand 3 or 5 minutes to visit a conbini, but a supermarket? I live in the sticks, even here that's a difficult feat. Hope the kid is ok

    I wish US airports were as good at security as Narita....

    Are you sure? I've driven into Narita airport many times, the checking is bare minimum, only enough to deter the locals. It would be very easy to take weapons in. Better than nothing though.....

    Well then, what to you call it when someone gets hit and runs because they know they will be blamed for drinking? A "get hit and run"? Never heard of it. "Hit and run", like many terms that define a multitude of situations, cannot be read literally and strictly. Its not a precise term. The fact that it was used tells us nothing about who is at fault or who hit whom.

    Thats what I was getting at earlier. Firstly, drinking and driving is bad, don't think for one minute I think otherwise. If a car is parked at a junction and not moving (driver drunk), suddenly someone drives into the back of him, what do you think would happen? Drunk driver, although his condition didn't actually CAUSE an accident, would quite possibly disappear. That would be "being hit and run". Of course the verdict of the lynch mob is already out. For the record I drive a car and ride bikes, I see the worst of both when I drive.

    @Zenny

    Hmm, "Hit and run" means last time I checked that faulty party HIT someone and RAN away.

    Exactly. Until the full facts are known, the car driver is guilty of leaving the scene and negligence. DUI can possibly be back calculated (depending on time lapsed). Whose fault it was needs investigation. Although, this is Japan, lock the driver up until he confesses all, job done.
