Well, my friends, as with the writings of japanese nationalists, I could probably read the whole thing in the original, but I prefer the English version.

yabits:Quotes from Zinn's book: "What brought the United States fully into the war was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor." Zinn relates some of the history that lead up to the attack, quoting from Judge Radhabinod Pal who was one of the presiding judges in the Tokyo War Crimes Trial: "[Pal] argued that the United States had clearly provoked the war with Japan and expected Japan to act."
Bang on, mate. And extreme kudos for bringing Radhabinod Pal into the discussion.Pal, as the SOLE dissenting judge at the Tokyo Trials, is a PERSONAL hero of mine, and I often ask my students about him.Even though japanese nationalists erected a statue of him at Yasukuni I still think he is fabulous, and was all about social justice.

Well, tis sad that although Obama wanted to bring healthcare to the 60 or 70 million who are denied it, the haters and the pickup-driving Scott Brown fans have ensured we will continue to see those daily images of Americans dying on the street before our very eyes.

Well, I see the usual carte blanchers are here trying to say Hamas has no right to float bombs in the Mediterranean and kill innocent Israelis or whoever.
I guess said people don't realize that Hamas has NO CHOICE but to do this. Maybe with a few deaths VIA WATERBORNE EXPLOSIVES the oppressed people of Palestine can show the stupid corporate medias of the world that the rockets they fire from Gaza DON'T result in deaths. The few remaining supporters here of Israel never stopped to consider THAT before condemning the inhabitants of Gaza. No, they just start with all the usual red screens and smoked herring. Disgusting!
Well, anyways, while the world's largest open-air gulag remains where it is, with people starving to death and what not, we all know the usual haters will keep on saying the Israeli government and military, should remain unwilling to even discuss the issue of settlements.

Well, my friends, another thing rightists and bourgeois readers don't know about Zinn is that he completely eschewed footnotes in his work, which was a revolutionary step, and it turned bourgeois history studies on its ear!
"Howard Zinn was a Marxist"? Oh please, I guess SOME people need to pick up a history book. Since he was born AFTER Marx died he was a STALINIST, not a MARXIST. Get it straight!
His parents immigrated to America from Russia, and undoubtedly they regretted the decision, especially when it meant living through the McCarthyism that affected EVERY single American in the 1950s.
How do I know he was a Stalinist and NOT a Marxist.Well, my many friends, that one is quite easy. In his magnum opus, A People's History of the United States, Zinn points out that America was to blame for the bombing of Pearl Harbour, a view which I can7t say I disagree with.
But rightists and the sargies of the world will try and protest and say that Zinn joined the US AirForce and particpated in bombing raids. Well yes, he did.But Against Germany, which had ATTACKED Russia! Zinn joined to help Stalin fight Hitler. Sheesh!I get so tired sometimes of having to be a teacher, 24/7.
Well, anyways, tis a sad thing that he has passed.
But we still have Ben Affleck.

yabits:"Zinn's writings are not for the cowardly."
Bingo!A lot of people are uncomfortable saying they are uncomfortable with the very idea of America, but Zinn was never one of them. The right wingers can call him every name in the book, but coward is not one of them. CArrying around his book with me and being able to quote his works made look cool and like I had a really edgy perspective, and I loved the feeling.
Oh, and before the bushlovers and the suprelibs of the world TRY and challenge me about said quoting try THIS one on for size
From page 368:
"In the early nineties, the false socialism of the Soviet Union failed"
So yes, now that Zinn has fallen people such as myself, and yabits, and feathrehead, will pick up that torch, and we will shoulder it.

dontknockit:"Those rockets are all they have to hit back with. They are a small hope, and a small token of self-respect."
Yahtze! You are back to your usual fine form, my compadre.Your attacks on Osama and Noam yesterday had me worried YOU were batting for the other team, but with the extremely withering sillogisms you use to highlight the INJUSTICE in Gaza you are putting the haters and the pro-israel rightists in their place, and how!
The rockets ARE a source of self-esteem and self-respect.You are bang-on correct (no pun intended ahahahaha!) with that one. Said rockets give those who fire them the satisfaction of knowing that they CAN get back at their oppresssors.(Growing up in the open air prison of Kingston,Ontario, I knew the feeling.)
Well, anyways my many friends, The Israelis knew darned well they would get mortared when they moved into the walled off ghetto known as the Gaza Strip. If their solution to getting mortared is to in return, mortar a school area they know darn well is loaded with civilian CHILDREN, then they should have moved further back from the wall, out of rocket range, instead. It's THAT simple!
If they do not have the heart suffer a bit of mortar fire and take the time to snipe militants or send soldiers in direct pursuit, then they are not getting any support, much less sympathy, from me.And that's just the way I roll, dammit! They put themselves in harm's way. And they have killed way more than those supped up hobby rockets.
After reading dontknockit7s heartbreaking account of how Palestinians can even GET snack foods without endangering their lives I think the new rallying cry really will become "Let the Children of Gaza have some potato chips!!!"
Peace.

Dontknockit:"I think it best to just IGNORE WHAT BIN LADEN HAS TO SAY."
Well, my friend, this is one time when you WON'T get a bingo! or a yahtze! from me. You post an opinion, and then you recant what you say.I just can't believe that! If one of your students, even one in an intermediate conversation class did such a thing, would you let it pass without a comment? No!You wouldn't.
I suppose next you are going to tell me to do the truly impossible and just ignore WHAT NOAM CHOMSKY HAS TO SAY ????!!!!

Well, my friends, I don't know where to begin on this one.Tis a sad day indeed for democrats, progressives and small m Marxists everywhere, It would be hard indeed to overestimate the influence that Howard Zinn had on me.I could just start by saying that when I was at uni in Kingston, EVERYONE had a copy of A People's History.Among the crowd that I hung with if you didn't have a copy in your dorm room or your apartment you basically couldn't laid. I carried mine with me EVERYWHERE.
And reading some posts here I really want to get my hands on a copy of Marx in Soho, which, as a work of literary imagination, is astounding, and fantastic.I thought I had all of Zinn's work, so knowing that there is still a Zinn work out there i have not read is the silver lining in reading about his untimely passing.
RIP, Howard. Searching Hirakata for a copy of Marx in Soho won't be a cakewalk, but it WILL give my life some meaning.

Dontknockit:"This makes me wonder if the bin Laden is now and always has been funded by the Republican party. Bin Laden speaking against global warming will have the obvious effect of making Americans deny it exists even as a natural occurrence."
Bingo! Another great post, mon ami. I,too, have often felt that the republican party supports Osama bin Laden or at least the Al Qaeda Group. And other posters here don't need to ask why, or for proof, dammit. It's just thhe way I roll!!!
it's just too funny watching the climate change deniers try and deny that they deny that the climate IS changing, and that it ALWAYS has. Fools!
Oh, and before the romeo ramens and the sarges of this world try and say Osama contributes to the global warming they need to get some facts straight - the World Trade Centers and the planes that exploded on 9-11 made the tiniest blip in the measure of OVERALL global warming;I for one am certain the barbecues bushie boy holds in texas, which I hate, are FAR more harmful to this earth.
Oh and here is another thing to thhink about. Today's New York Times, even though they are corporate shills, recognize that Osama bin Laden IS onto something:
"And he offered a word of praise for Noam Chomsky, the American linguist and liberal political activist.
“Noam Chomsky was correct when he compared the U.S. policies to those of the Mafia,” Al Jazeera quoted Mr. bin Laden as saying."
Clearly, US policies are part of the problem of global warming. And it is more clearer than ever that Osama and Noam, and not bush and cheney, are the ones who will help us out of the horrible, horrible place we find ourselves in.

Well, my friends, I know it is only symbolic, and it isn't MEANT to stand for America or anything, but nonetheless seeing that statue IN Japan is almost as scary seeing as scott brown driving around here in Hirakata in his pickup truck would be.Take it from someone who grew up in Kingston,Ontario, which is only about 600 kilometres from New York!

Well,my friends, I just came across this, and I can not express my anger, and my fear, and the horror it fills me with, and I really think the scientists who tend to the Doomsday Clock need to move it FORWARD to about 1 minute before midnight, aka ARMAGEDDON:
"I'm Scott Brown. I drive a truck."

Haha ha ha...well, my many friends,it's just TOO funny that old man McCain would think that palin, who was the worst vice president candidate EVER,could act as a lifeboat for his staying in the Senate.
Anyways, McCain doesn't stand a chance.Obama is more popular than ever.Hence, the economy IS picking up and health care WILL soon be available to the 70 million who don't have it and who the republicans want to see die immediately.Disgusting!
The sailboat is just dead in the water. Picking palin is like unfurling the sail and thinking the wind will make your boat move or something.Clearly, the guy is suicidal.

featherhead:"You aren't EVEN going to try the "reverse racisim" fairyt ale argument, are you?"
Bingo! You really could be the next Noam Chomsky,or Roger Ebert. My feeling is the choice is yours. It's just TOO funny trying to watch rightists talk about racism in a Cameron movie.(I LOVE everything he has ever done!)
Well, anyways, Avatar is the perfect movie for the Obama era, which has ushered in a kind of golden age in race relations in America, even though Rush Limbaugh IS still on TV and just spewing hatred all day long.
"Personally, I would have gone for the blue lady as well."
Bingo! Me too. I have always had a thing for other races.I hate my own.

Well, my many friends, clearly one of two items featured in this article needs to be BANNED, and I mean like yesterday. Either SUVs or guns. And yes, it IS as simple as that. Even though no one was injured THIS TIME, the potential for a violent ending EXISTED, and as I have had to explain to many people here far too often violence NEVER solved anything.
Here endeth my lesson.
