@ gt. Have you missed my point, are you criticising my post? Maybe I've missed your point however, you are technically right and that is the case in most countries. However, if you take that to extremes then you will never dare to move at all. I suggested that people may tend to hit and run in cases where they could not possibly avoid an accident but know that they will be blamed nevertheless. Anyone who drives in Japan knows that the average pedestrian or cyclist has the brains of a rocking horse when it comes to road safety.

No excuse at all for hit and run BUT, if you are driving a vehicle and some idiot suddenly walks or rides in front of you and you have absolutely no chance of stopping, nothing at all that you can do, inder Japanese law you are to blame and will feel the full weight of the law. That's the way it is here and, in my opinion, is the reason that many drivers do not stop.

Well, that is one less fanatic to potentially cause us harm. When does the hand grenade distribution start? Simple instructions in as many langauges as necessary; pull pin, release handle, shout Allah Akhbar, be blown to pieces thinking about the nonsense you were told about Paradise and Virgins.

Having lived here for a long time and having been hospitalised with pneumonia and having it fixed, I have no complaints against the Japanese doctors. This was 11 years ago and I have had another hospital visit since then for another problem; could have been very serious but they fixed that too. So, those of you criticising the Japanese medics, give us the facts, the real "this happened to me" story and then we can decide.

Don't understand why he says that the market is "closed", US makers are represented here but the buying public doesn't buy many of them. German makers are also represented here and they do very well, especially in the prestige/luxury segment where their penetration far exceeds the overall average of 5%. Market forces, of course but you may speculate as to why this is.
Posted in: It remains the most closed auto market in the developed world. Imports make up less than 5% of all vehicle sales in Japan compared to 45% in the U.S. This is clearly not two-way trade nor the result of market forces at work. The one-way street is a U.S. job killer.

SamuraiBlue: Thank you for the explanation, all is now clear, burn x tons of oil and x tons of coal and you can calculate the amount of CO2 produced.
I still can't visualise what one ton of gas looks like let alone 1.12 billion tons though.

Why does this article show a picture of STEAM rising from a cooling tower?
I don't know about about anyone else but seeing as how CO2 is emitted as a gas, I have great trouble in trying to visualise 1.12 billion TONS of the stuff. I mean, how do they know this? How is this number calculated?

What do you mean, "get a better security system"? The report says that the intruder climbed over a wall and the police caught him. Maybe a higher wall or some barbed wire would help but it has nothing to do with his security system.

I don't understand why the media are not door-stepping their auditors. They seem to have breached every rule in the book and could / should lose their licences over this.

It has always been the same, I could write the script for the posts whenever Becky-chan is mentioned here. There are those who like her, those who don't care and those who spout all the jealous vitriol they can muster.
Becky is far from stupid and certainly is no airhead. She has an MBA and she is in business, it is as simple as that. Her business is selling herself (in the nicest possible way) to those who want to buy what she has. No different from anyone selling themself because they are a native English speaker and can teach the language; no different from selling your talents as a manager, programmer, whatever trade or profession you have or belong to; no different from owning a pub and selling beer and food to those who want to buy what you have for sale.
The girl has done well for herself, she does not need to be insulted. If you don't like her then don't watch or read about her, move on but don't criticise her for being successful. Personally I admire her for being successful at what she does, she is moderately talented and atttractive with it though a tad skinny for my tastes. She is going to be around for many years to come, you wait and see.

@huberts2 Yes, my friend, you are absolutely right on all fronts.
I am sitting here smiling as I write because, I have been involved in the software business in Japan, in a particularly narrow vertical market, for many years. More than one customer has insisted to me that "your GAAP accounting systems from the UK don't work in Japan as we have different standards". One customer even insisted that we use of the firms which you mentioned above to audit our software!
In my experience of accounting in Japanese companies, after opening the door to the accounts department you can be forgiven for thinking that you have stepped back 40 to 50 years in time. There are far fewer properly qualified professional accounting staff in companies here than anywhere I know, in the first world at least.

I hope that Olympus' auditors are being looked at too. After all, they signed off the accounts as being a true statement of the company's financial position after every year-end.

What tarriffs is he referring to? US makers are represented in Japan e.g. Ford, Chrysler, GM. Bottom line is that they can only sell as many as the market will buy, and that's not very many. Japanese car market is around 95% domestic but certain segments of the market e,g. luxury/prestige are dominated by the German makers, for obvious reasons. Their cars are not only perceived to be better than US cars but are proven to be so. Some US cars are better now than they used to be, for sure but they still have a long way to go in designing and producing cars which appeal to this market. The Senator may also have forgotten the huge investment that Japanese makers made in producing their cars in the US.

@NetNinja As Gyouza said, it was a blue and white kojin taxi, NOT company owned but privately owned. In this case who knows what happened; driver simply was going too fast, had a medical problem of some kind, brakes failed (unlikely I know)? I have often talked to company taxi drivers who work 60 hours a week in 3 x 20 hour shifts - crazy but I don't know if that is illegal in Japan or not, it is in some other countries.
