The article does not say that 1343 dead were drivers, they were "victims" which includes drivers and anyone else involved.

Quite. This is just JT rabble-rousing. The photo, on its own, means nothing, only what was happening in the 1/250th of a second for which the shutter was open. To have any understanding of their feelings at that time needs a short movie.

Most people from the UK will differentiate between the Peace sign (made with the palm facing away from you) and the V sign (made with the palm towards you). The V sign, if made with an upward movement of the arm and hand, is effectively telling someone to F off. Many hundreds of years ago when the British were fighting the French, captured French archers would have the first two fingers of their right hands cut off and were then released so as not to inconvenience the British by having to take care of prisoners; after all, they could not pull their bowstrings any more so were harmless. In order to make their point the British archers would make the V sign with an upward movement of the arm thus demonstrating to the French that they still had THEIR fingers. The British have continued with this tradition to this day for some reason :-)

Seriously, can't they just pull the plugs and disconnect China from the 'net for a week or so as a warning?

They don't make the "V" sign, Churchill, and others before him, did that. They make the so-called Peace sign and, to me at least, it looks ridiculous.

Yes, Noda should do that, and then he should urge Seoul and Beijing to look to the future.

So, our new Finance Minister's only experience of finance is fiddling his expenses as an NHK reporter? As expected, a couple of Ozawa'a buddies are in senior positions too. We can only wait and see what happens.

They vary, some are OK, some are not. What irritates me however is that some commercials look so much like the program they are being shown in that it is difficult to tell that it is a commercial for a few seconds; bring back the days when the end of a program segment was marked by a screen showing "End of Part One" for example. Am I right in thinking that there is a law in Japan that commercials cannot be shown with increased volume? I believe that law exists in some other countries.

I think that many people, including myself, have realised over the last 3 months that using less 'lectric has a positive (no pun intended) effect on the bill and will continue to be thrifty.
If Tepco's daily usage graph is to be believed then their revenues must be around one third down on last year.

Of course the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings, the Tokyo fire-bombings too, were war crimes - they were directed against the civilian population and not at military targets. At least the Pearl Harbour attack was against a military target.

Why do you perpetuate this dumbed-down American way of describing an area by comparing it to other known structures, stadia etc.? We are not stupid, tell us what the area is in hectares or sq meters not that it covers an area the same as seven Tokyo Domes; most people have no idea how big Tokyo Dome is, I don't and I have lived in Tokyo for 13 years.

stove@CPFC; sorry but disagree with you on this. The crime is too severe, this man can never be rehabilated and forgiven. Are you seriously suggesting that you would take the responsibility for releasing him after receiving positive advice from his assessors? I think he should never be released and, if Norway had the death penalty then it would be appropriate in his case. You may cry revenge but I think the death penalty would be justice for those who died.
