My point is that this waste is sitting outside exposed to the elements and polluting on a daily basis. We're all worried about the effects of radiation but there seems to be little concern with regards to the numerous chemicals and metals that are polluting the atmosphere up there. I'm not impatient as far as the rebuilding goes and in fact I was delighted the last time I was in Rikuzentakata at the amount stuff that had been done. But leaving this ways to be exposed to th elements is not a good thing.
And as I said before IF the quickest AND cleanest way to dispose of it is to move it to areas that can de with it then they should do that. If there are alternatives that deal with it quicker and cleaner then that's what should be done.
But leaving it is very bad.

Zichi,
As you know, I've been up in the area and I was there in March so I am aware of what is up there. I'm also aware of the asbestis and I'm sure there's a lot of other nasty stuff up there.
And you more or less echo my point on the mountain. It was all exposed for the first 3 months so there's no reason to expect that the waste in the middle of the mountain is mountain is more exposed than that on the outside. Therefore if the outside is safe then it's fair to assume that the middle will be.
This waste needs to be dealt with quicky but given the size of this disaster it's hardly surprising that the prefectures need help disposing of that waste.

First of all, I know all about the maps etc but we're not talking about taking waste from different parts of the prefecture. We're talking about buildings, cars etc that were left in the aftermath of the tsunami. For months they sat where they were left so it's fair to assume that there's been a uniformed pattern of contamination. It was subsequently piled tens of metres high, hundreds of metres long. The outer part will have been exposed to the elements for longer and this is more likely to be contaminated for longer and therefore have more contamination. For at least 3 months much of this mountain of waste would have been protected by the other waste on top. So it's fair to assume that if the outer waste is not badly contaminated then the middle won't be.
There's a lot of conjecture as to what kind of waste it is and what the side effects will be. But what shouldn't be open to question is that this shouldn't be left exposed to the elements and the longer that it is the worse it would be. I can understand why people wouldn't want to live near somewhere that is treating this waste but then again I've never understood why anyone would choose to live there anyway.

I'd be interested to know why you'd think that some materials are more contaminated than others. Given what I've seen up there I'd go as far as to suggest that you would only need to check 1% of the waste. Assuming that this waste has been stored in mountains that I've seen elsewhere then the most contaminated with radiation will be on the edge of the mountain as they are the bits that would be most exposed. And they should check the middle parts of the mountain as well but that should be all. Secondly, if we can try and remove the don't trust the government can't trust the results from the argument. There are thousands of cars that need destroying, tonnes of rubber, countless other quantities of whatever that is also polluting the environment. The longer that it isn't dealt with, the more environmental damage can be caused. If sharing that waste between other prefectures is the quickest and cleanest way to deal with it then that's what needs to be done. If there are other, better ways then they should be explored but the longer that this waste is not dealt with the worse it is for the environment up there.

It's not just death rate it's also the areas of contamination and the amount of contamination in those areas. This is bad for the area around the Dai Ichi plant but compared to the effect of Chernobyl both in terms of total devastation and death rates (long term and short) then this is not as significant.

Be as sarcastic as you like but it would help if you read what I posted.
Otherwise your attempts at sarcasm come across as illogical rants.
I'm also surprised at the -3 points I currently have. So perhaps other people have missed the point?
I was highlighting that there are more illnesses associated with radiation than just thyroid cancer. And secondly I was saying that the Dai Ichi disaster isn't comparable to the Chernobyl incident. A quick tally of the current death toll that is directly attributed to Dai Ichi compared with the number of fatalities of Chernobyl in the first six months should be sufficient evidence to back this up.
And at no point have I said that people should listen to the government.
So be sarcastic but at least try to be accurate.

Thyroid cancer isn't the only effect of radiation poisoning. I've been very consistent with my claims that this disaster isn't comparable to Chernobyl but claims like those above are ludicrous.

Just to clarify, I'm not with safecast but have been there with someone associated with them and have travelled with their Geiger counters.
On a recent trip to Minami Soma we met someone who had recently returned to the city having spent a number of months in Machida. When asked why he returned his response was simple 'because Machida is horrible'. Which made us laugh.
On my most recent trip there I noticed a lot of tired faces which is understandable when you consider that these people have survived the triple disaster and lost so much. Most are in good spirits but there are obviously those who aren't whether this is because of the percieved or actual threat of radiation or because they are still constantly rocked by earthquakes isn't for me to say but I hope that there is sufficient counselling for these people. However, I strongly doubt it.

I've been with members of safecast who built the Geiger counters as well as others who have bought them online. We've had them strapped to the truck as well as hand held and they've all showed similar readings. Naturally they're higher when you put them on the ground however they aren't designed to check the ground which is why you get all the excited/distorted claims on YouTube. It's constantly indicated to us that in the areas of temporary housing and along the coast it's safe. But that doesn't mean that there are areas that aren't safe. Likewise the road in through itate shows substantially higher readings 3.0 plus and as this is a known hotspur it's fair to assume that there will be higher readings in the village.

Zichi,
As I said it's a big city in terms of geographical size but going on my on personal experiences in the cityand with the Geiger counter readings that we've taken on a number of occasions as well as those that have been taken by members of the group when I'm not there then i've been able to conclude that in the areas of temporary houses it's fine. Less than 1.0 and regularly less than 0.2
And ALL children and infants should be tested. Regularly.

MINAMI Soma is an amalgamation of a number of different towns and so it covers a wide area. I cannot speak for every area as I haven't been there but everywhere that I have been is fine. In fact there was a map published recently with radiation levels that showed that Gunma was far more contaminated than Minami Soma.
As I said it's a large place and there may be places with higher but around the temporary housing complexes it's well within acceptable levels.

They use helicopters to dump water on wildfires to try and bring them under control. Why is it so remarkable that they would do it here?
The ONLY question with regards to the sea water is why did TEPCO take so long to decide that the plant was unsalvageable and the worst case scenario had been reached? It's obviously a cost issue but I would hope that at some point in the future there will be a public enquiry as to why they waited till they did and whether they thought that they were justified to wait till then.

That's a very good question. So instead of trying to find out the answer you start spreading fear and make ridiculous unfounded statements. You could try and do some research before posting. It may help you.

You're right, I'm not one of his colleagues. But then again I AM qualified to say that there are textbooks that state that nuclear reactors are sited next to oceans so that in a worst case scenario there is an endless supply of water. So to reiterate my point. Again. He made a claim. Which is false. A claim that was intentionally or accidentally false but neither explanation makes him credible.

I am not angry with him. I was just highlighting the fact that he made a statement that was grossly inaccurate. That he did so was either due to ignorance or to intentionally mislead the viewers but either way he has no credibility as an expert.

He didn't say it wasn't standard practice. He indicated it was an absurd idea. Hence the reason he giggled as a child when he said it.
I can understand your assesment because you're not claiming to be an expert and therefore you can be wrong.
But to put it in simple terms. All of the nuclear power plants in the UK are situated on the coast for one reason. And one reason alone. ANd that is that if it all goes t!ts up that there is an endless supply of water which can cool the reactor. And ANYONE who claims to have any knowledge on the subject and is on television as an expert should know that.

IHe claimed that the only reason we didn't lose Northern Japan was because they dumped sea water into the reactor. He laughed as he said it to highlight the fact that it was such an out there concept that they did that. That no textbook would tell you to dump seawater to stop a meltdown.
He also stated in the same interview that it prevented 3 chernobyls.
To be a supposed leading scientist and to make a claim like that is reprehensible.
