Taken as a three-way race, and viewed as a comparison purely of politics and policies, I honestly think that McCain is the best candidate, if he can stay true to his bi-partisan social liberal tendencies he has shown to date, that have made the right of the Republican establishment such enemies of his.

Clinton is the other contender for the policy middle ground, but the problem is that she is competing with a Democrat left winger for votes of union and interest group delegates who are primarily isolationist in outlook. So she and Barack are competing to say how much each other opposes free trade, and Barack going further saying that the US should not go out of its borders at all, while the only candidate free and able to talk sense is McCain. Yes, Barack would be a change, and he is young and hansome and all that, but if you put the three candidates on a sheet of paper, without photos, and line up what each stands for, I think that he would be a weak candidate against McCain.

McCain should be able to enjoy the next few months as the two democrats alienate middle America campaigning to the vested interests on the left of the democrats who will decide the nominee.

However, if Obama does get the nomination, I won't pretend that the minority of Americans who actually do get out to vote really think about or care deeply about the substantive policy issues at stake in the election. So Obama still has a chance.

I'd say that a vote for McCain is a vote for a new war with Iran.

Why are there 100,000+ troops in Iraq, and only a few thousand troops in Afghanistan, backed up in equal numbers by Canadian and French troops in the REAL war on terror?

I'd say that Clinton would be the best candidate for a thought through military foreign policy (certainly not economic though) - but McCain can take the spot for economic and military foreign policy if he can keep the discredited right wing of Republican neocons at arms length.

Greentea - I wouldn't be surprised if these guys were hetrosexual doing this for a lark. One nice thing about japan is that there isn't the same kind of overt prejudice against gays or effeminity that there is in other countries where such intolerance is advocated by religious doctrine.

What is lewd about the poses - showing a bit of leg but nothing more than in a sumo photo or a omikoshi festival. I see nothing lewd in this whatsoever. Are you being serious?

I think he believes that the Chinese government can do something about it - desertification in China has a lot to do with poor and failed agricultural policies and deforestation - the government admitted as much when this caused the terrible floods all over China a few years ago.

Still, nice to see that the audience had an open mind to the environmental policies and practices that harm Chinese people far more than China's unfortunate neighbors.

I guess that the world is being careful about this because they don't want to be seen as taking sides or inciting violence.

But when the ruling party blocks the publication of electoral results, and calls for a recount at the same time....

Mugabe is still a hero to the governments of South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and other southern african nations, but it is precisely because of that, and for the defense of democracy in their own nations that these governments need to be the voice of reason to Mugabe, urging him to step down and transfer power in a dignified manner that is best for the future of Zimbabwe.

Puking. I've been sick once on a train, and I held it from Shinjuku to Nakano, ran out onto the platform and let rip into a garbage bin.

But the number of times I have seen weak gross drunks spilling their nijikai all over the train carriage in front of them...

Idiots who stand in front of the door and don't get out of the way when people are trying to get out bugs me as well.

Also, I can tolerate most forms of poor personal hygiene (just look or move away), but odor just kills it for me - and I will move to another carriage when you have an exceptionally stinky person fouling up the air in a carriage.

Nosunset - nobody is demonizing the olympics, and nobody is demonizing China. Only the communist party of China is being demonized, and it is being demonized in sympathy for its abuse of the Chinese people.

There is a lot of reaction like this is an attack on their country when it is not - it is an attack on the regime that rules China, which is in many ways similar to the fascist regimes that ruled Japan, Germany, Italy and Spain in WWII, and rules North Korea and Cuba today.

China is the victim of the communists - that is why people are protesting. Unless you are a member of the CCP yourself, I don't see why you would be offended.

Cleo, I believe that last I heard, Rolf Harris was going through the courts on a cruelty to animals charge, in what I understand was a kangaroo-related charge of attempted bondage.

I'm sick of hearing about Brittney but that's about it. I hardly watch J-"news" on the box any more.

    Any word on hyperlinks/search indexing?

Also, on recent comments, I would prefer simply to see the article names and have a longer list. Problem is that during lunch or when there is lots of traffic, or one thread is particularly busy, you still can't tell whether people have commented recently on other topics or not (well, not without going through each 10 thread page at a time. That's why I really liked using

    http://archive.japantoday.com/jp/bbs/last

Is there any chance of restoring some sort of page like this? I don't mean necessarily replacing the "Recent Posts" page, even though this should at least be longer, but even just putting a link somewhere (such as on the Recent Posts Page) that will show something more like a Recent Posts Index. I think you will find it will get people like me going through more of the site, than just the threads commented on in the last 30 minutes. As it is, I am finding the Recent Posts page useful, but I am still not navigating at all as comfortably as I used to.

The Cloverfield thing is a good example of how many businesses are using YouTube to "create" viral videos:

    http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/11/22/the-secret-strategies-behind-many-viral-videos/

The latest one appears to be the MRirian/Magibon thing (I sniffed something was up when she started introducing her friend "GYao"...) - turns out all of her staring and saying nothing was another movie marketing campaign. Not that this bothers me, if they are interesting. I'll check out Cloverfield on DVD.

Apec - no one is comparing the olympics to the Nazis or trying to demonize the olympics. It is the government of China. and the comparisons have some merit.

PRC and Russia both shifted to capitalism, but Russia also became democratic (if only just), and so they are two totally different things. China needs political reform to match its economic development.

Henryo - I don't believe that your Japanese coworker told you it would be okay to kill Chinese since China has claimed to have killed thousands.

In any case, as a Chinese American, you should be quite aware that in spite of the tens of millions of dead killed in China's past, that is not behind protests against the olympic torch (historical wrongoding is what is behind Chinese protests at Japan). The protests are targetted at wrongdoing of the present day regime, from arbitrary arrest of religious and political groups not approved by the communists, to suppression of human rights of muslim and Tibetan authorities, to abuse of worker rights, to aggression towards Taiwan, to the failure of any of those responsible for the Tienenmen massacre to be brought to justice or any kind of accountability for their crimes. These are present day issues - and ones that democracy wouldn't necessarily solve, but would go a long way toward addressing, just as it has in the past in Japan.

Singapore is head and shoulders above anything else I have ever flown on. Not just for the appearance of attendants, but the service, general comfort (economy on Singapore is like Business on Qantas or other airlines) ANA was pretty good as well. I have heard good things about Emirates and Virgin, however.

As for bad airlines - Lufthansa, Qantas, Continental, Malaysian all stand out to me as sucking. I've probably used Qantas more than any other airline, and now that I have seen what good quality service is on other airlines, can't stand the rudeness and laziness of flight staff, crap food, and most of all, the utter inflexibility and incompetence of ground staff. I don't know how many times I have seen passengers forced to open their suitcases at the check-in and arrange their suitcases for being 1kg over (because union bag handlers won't carry them). Also had a bad experience of having had changeover boarding passes misprinted which has made me miss flights.
