Oct 4 at around 10:40 p.m.... Why does it take so long to report this crime to public?

It was reported right away when it happened, the boy's funeral was on TV as well.

It was covered here on JT as well, I was trying to post the link, and keep getting a message about 'potentially offensive content'

I'm a foreigner, living in kita-ku, and no it's not usually known for 'crazies'.

By your yardstick how would you rate Miyodani then, after the Jun-kun incident where that kid had his head cut off, or the Shin-Oriental Hotel (now the Crowne Plaza) after a dentist was shot dead by the yakuza by mistake in the coffee shop?

Fenton, she did call 911. Just because it isn't said explicitly in an article on JT doesn't mean she didn't call. All other news outlets have talked about her 911 call.

showing these storys to my wife always quells her desire to move back to Japan.

In comparison to the murder rates in the US? Are you serious?

She just wants to be one of those who cower behind the "freedom of speech" tag.

    'cowering' behind freedom of speech?

When you go out to take a pull at the Tigers tail don't come whining when it bites you in return.

I guess she got a real big "Reality check" with this one.But I guess her luck ran out when she decided to go against Islam.

Well, I hope she got her little chuckle, for she is most certainly now seeing the gravity of her actions

Anybody today that would make a comic cartoon or anti islamic piece of art or written material is an A-hole because of all the hot headed Islamic wack jobs out there.

she just loves to exercise her free speech rights so much.

I'm amazed at all these 'You should be careful not to piss off the Muslims' comments.....tell me, who's cowering? By saying that she should have known better, is getting her 'consequences' etc you are saying that Muslims are dangerous despite the numerous uses of the word 'peaceful on this thread.

You piss off a Christian, are they going to put out a contract on you to defend their religion? If so, the makers of many movies, the artist who made the "Piss Christ" (an 'artwork' consisting of a crucifix in a vat of urine) and others would be on the hit list. Are they?

Conventional medicine is called conventional because its what the authorities resort to, fearing radical ideas.

Oh, give me a break...'conventional medicine' is that which is approved following double-blind testing and clinical trials. Trying "radical ideas" without solid proof is what gets people killed. Duh.

Maria, 'homeopathy' generally refers to dilutions of substances and the claim is made that the more diluted, the better it works because of the memory or vibrations of the water. James Randi gives talks on homeopathy, and he takes a full bottle of homeopathic sleeping pills in front of his audience at the beginning of the talk and is fully awake when his talk is done. 'Dilution=works better' makes no sense at all.

That, I think is different from what you are doing.

They don't have the knowledge of what eating right is. How many doctors do you see with a pot belly?

Doctors are human. They know, but they like to eat and drink like the rest of us. One exception might be internists...many I know have stopped smoking, won't eat junk food...

Zenny, if you're going to make a claim, it's up to you to provide back up. It's not Siouxchief's job to go researching to prove you wrong. Because something is 'common knowledge across the globe', or in the parlance of many a snake oil salesman, and 'ancient forgotten cure' doesn't make it true.

A herniated disc will be better in 3 months anyway in many cases. Not if you have a splintered or fractured disc, but if it's muscle involvement, 3 months is usually the max for pain, treated or untreated. Most ailments like sinuses, back pain, colds, flu, are all self-limiting. They will go away on their own. You'll be in pain longer if you don't treat, but go away they will. People will generally credit with a 'cure' whatever they were doing at the time. You can't know for sure unless you try it both ways....next time your disc pops, go to rehab and get hot packs and traction, see how long it takes to get better. Next sinus problem, try conventional meds, see if the result is the same.

When all these remedies get flying colors in double-blind studies, I'll get on board. Alternative supplements are not regulated at all in the US, you may get pills with next to nothing in them, up to pills with double the recommended dose. There were quite a few cancer patients poisoned by apricot pit supplements which were much too concentrated. 'Big pharma' may be considered a great evil, but all pharmaceuticals go through double-blind clinical studies after years of pre-clinical studies. The same cannot be said for alternatives.

Thalidomide was a sleeping pill. It has been found to have other applications in the past decade or so--

In 1994, Dr. Robert D'Amato at Harvard Medical School discovered that thalidomide was a potent inhibitor of new blood vessel growth (known as angiogenesis). Numerous cancer clinical trials were initiated with thalidomide based upon this finding and subsequently in 1997 Dr. Bart Barlogie’s reported thalidomide’s initial effectiveness against Multiple Myeloma and it was later approved in the United States by the FDA for use in this malignancy. The FDA has also approved the drug's use in the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum. There are studies underway to determine the drug's effects on arachnoiditis and several types of cancers. However, physicians and patients alike must go through a special process to prescribe and receive thalidomide (S.T.E.P.S.) to ensure no more children are born with birth defects traceable to the medication. Celgene Corporation has also developed analogues to thalidomide, such as lenalidomide, that are substantially more powerful and have fewer side effects — except for greater myelosuppression.[25]

It should simply never have been given to pregnant women. I would assume that drug approval processes have improved since the late 40s and 50s, when thalidomide was approved.

How can a woman tell them it's not acceptable when doing so risks being >beaten or ending up in the poorhouse?......And honestly, it's still >socially acceptable to beat and rape your wife and hit your kids. It's a >"personal matter".

Really now. Feel like backing that up at all?

Good comments, Kirakira. A marriage is what the TWO people who are in it make it.

'I never got a word out of him' said one woman.....how much effort did she put into keeping conversation going, was she openly contemptuous of his pay and bonus? Marriage is not a one-way street, it takes the contributions of both to make it work. Complaining every day over coffee to your friends while you say nothing to your husband about what bothers you accomplishes nothing.

    It's Japanese culture!

Yeah, let's import the American model...get sick of your husband, decide he 'just doesn't do it for you anymore'?Divorce 'em take half of what they own, garnish their pay, take the house, get a restraining order so he can't see the kids...it's a wonderful life.

Clean up after them? How is taking someone's car out of their garage and selling it cleaning up after them?

The surplus in used cars is causing theft of Land Cruisers and Lexus high-end cars? How does that work?

'The Japanese' were stuck until recently with crappy car inspection law that requires the 10-man+ inspection yearly after the 10th year you own the vehicle. Old habits die hard.

Himajin, I'm intrigued - did you ask what on earth they meant by 'kids like themselves'? I also would find it highly offensive.

This was someone I had other connections with, I really couldn't press the issue, I just was busy every time we were asked. Just got me in the gut, it didn't sit right. The other thing I've heard said (by es-pats) is that 'You'd better make sure you have some foreign friends in your old age'. My Japanese friends are what, pray tell? Sometimes those who say they are treated differently are the ones who are causing the problem...

I guess the general public are too stoopid and lazy to use their eyes.

I started to drive a hybrid last year. When in a parking lot or somewhere else you have to drive very slowly, you run on battery, and the car makes no sound. Those with really good ears might hear the sound the tires make on the asphalt, but that's asking a bit much. The problem is hybrid drivers who speed through parking lots startling people...they should realize that people can't hear them coming.

Your daughter's Classical Japanese teacher is a twerp, if you'll pardon my >French. My son does beautiful calligraphy, winning prizes at the >Prefectural level in junior high. He also won the school's annual Hyakunin >Isshu taikai twice in a row. No one ever suggested there was anything >strange about an obviously hafu boy doing well in traditional Japanese >pursuits. People just acknowledge that he's a good all-rounder. In the >Prefectural English Speech contest he was entered in the 'returnee' >section, even though at that point he hadn't spent more than a few weeks >outside Japan. Maybe that was hafu stereotyping, but he did win a prize >nonetheless.

I agree. My son's first grade teacher was like that. She expected him to make mistakes in Japanese, not be able to read etc. She was the only humdinger we had, though. There are some real jerks out there, but thankfully I've found them in the minority. My son is 3rd dan in kendo (so far) and it's never been thought strange because he's hafu that he can master something like that. He graduated top of his class in Uni and got certificates, a cash award and other things, and no one said 'Gee how did that hafu do that!'.

When we lived in ye old inaka there were a few ignorant remarks and questions deftly handled and left at that. Those who don't know anything about different cultures, well, they don't know and what are you going to do about the fact that said person's had his/her head up their butt their whole life? Their lack of education certainly isn't anything for me to remedy. Anyone vulgar enough to keep harping on it simply wasn't associated with. I chalked it up to ignorance or envy. With children, a clear 'You pull that again and you never come through my front door again' was enough 98% of the time.

Pointing out all the Chinese and Korean kids is a bit of a mystery, perhaps something that's done just between teachers. In 7 years of PTA I never saw it. * Why* it's done is something I'd like to know, is any reason given? Or is it just told to you and that's that? What are you expected to do, as a teacher, with the information?

Personally I don't believe that foreign visitors to a Japanese company- who speak fluent Japanese- should be accosted with English of any kind.

That's YOUR issue. Your example is of you speaking to a German in English...oi...

Hmph, you can spot an Eikaiwa Karl a mile away !

BZZZZZT! Wrong answer. And I surely hope you're not one, seeing as you don't care if words are spelled correctly. How can you learn a foreign language if you don't give a sh*t about your own??

    Good lord- a Brit !

BZZZZT! Wrong again...I said 'University hospital settings', what about that do you not understand, grammatically?

helps me easily find who the hafus are in any given company I may visit.

And so burdened with this knowledge that........well? Why does it bother you so badly that you can find hafu?

Mods, this is my last answer to Branded.
