For me, considering all the work it is to put up the decorations, two weeks is too short :-D

My house! ;-P The tree goes up Thursday. As I put it away on the 26th or 27th to get ready for New Year's ,I want it up early enough to enjoy it for a little while. I got window candles at Costco this year.
I'll have to check out Luminarie, the frames for the lights start near my gym, so I get a look at the design early. If I'm really lucky I get to see them testing the lights a few days ahead of the official start.

Zichi, often, when you guys rattle we don't. We rattle when Kyoto Minami or Wakayama has a quake.

And, I just drove a Mustang in the US for a week and still haven't unkinked my back...I don't think the ride really is anything to write home about. I actually think the older Mustangs had a better ride.
You don't think the Mitsubishi 3000GT is a nice sports car?
"In technical terms this Mitsubishi was arguably more sophisticated than a Honda NSX and also more powerful, but it was much cheaper and far more aggressive to look at and drive. It certainly helped that it not only had four-wheel drive but also four-wheel steering and a whole kitchen sink load of technical innovations.
Certainly the anti squat/dive/roll independent suspension helped to keep this hugely powerful V6 on the road. Indeed 'Active Airflow Control' involved all sorts of clever aerodynamic devices that operate automatically at just 50mph. I say just because the maximum speed is a substantial but limited 155mph. It will also get to 60mph in less than six seconds. "
DH had one, it kicked butt.

Here's the Japan Meteorological Agency earthquake info page. You can click backwards through the quake reports, and scroll down and get the magnitude for each part of Tokyo, or wherever the quake may have been,

Here's a link to follow quakes, Bivek
http://www.japanquakemap.com/
You can look at quakes within the last 3,6,9,12, and 24 hours, as well as pick a day to look at. If you let it run it will replay the quakes on 3/11

I disagree with the headline though, for the most part there was no pushing and shoving in food or water lines, stories like this so often take on a gloating 'so you're not so different from us!' tone.
I still haven't seen Japanese baseball fans burn dozens of cars when their team wins a championship...the society is overall less violent. The things that have occurred, and that occurred in Kobe in '95, are a drop in the bucket to what is often seen in other nations.
Yes, I did see the story of people taking food out of convenience stores, but I don't think anyone would advocate people sitting in the shelters starving. It's quite different from the stealing of TV's, computers, office chairs etc seen on the news from the US after any upheaval. Very little of what was stolen was edible, on contrast with bags of rice from a conbini.

Look, you are always saying, about a number of subjects, that you 'never saw that on the news' so I wondered.
You're volunteering in Tohoku? Hats off to you!

What news do you watch? I've seen reports of all these things, sen videos on YouTube about the suicide rate. There is less drumming of stories here like there is in the US (24 hours a day of Kim Kardashian's divorce, for instance...)

I think some of the strain on fish populations may have started when the Japanese moved away from traditional sea food eating based on the season, and sushi became an everyday food instead of for special occasions. Each fish had a season you could enjoy it in, different types of fish were off-limits at certain times, for instance, a season they were likely to have parasites. Another example would be how eel was eaten only in summer, now you can buy frozen eel any time of the year. Eel donburi in January is just plain weird :-D but now you can eat any fish any time of year.

Really? When I was looking at them I thought that's what I was told.....although it could have been DH that said that and not the dealer...it's 2 years ago now, I could very well be mistaken!

To keep them from buying what they want?
Mercedes sells the S600 series here, a $180,000 car. They don't even market it in the US. I see plenty of PT Cruisers in Kobe, as well as a few Chrysler 300's. Volkswagen and Audi have always done well here too. The Lexus cars you see in Japan are all imported from the US.
Why, that's it in a nutshell. I've seen this debate rage for 30 years in the media. The Detroit big wigs from Ford et al come to Japan crying for 'free trade' but they have refused, all this time, to make cars with right-hand steering. It's damned claustrophobic to drive on the left with the steering wheel on the left. Interviews on TV with actual Japanese car buyers show them saying 'I'd like American cars if the steering wheel was on the other side'. How many times do they have to be told?
Another point is that American cars just aren't designed attractively. The aforementioned Chrysler 300 is among the ugliest cars I've ever seen. Clunky interiors, unexciting exteriors.

They don't know how long the drain has been broken, but all the rainwater for the past 7 months leaking out from around the pipe into the soil would give a high reading, don't you think?
There was a military facility there a long time ago (WWII?) as someone pointed out.

I was on the PTA several times. Bitchy women are everywhere, I just don't associate with the type at all, the 'career' PTA types who know everything better than everybody else. With my friends and I it was friendly banter, nothing more.
