of course, living in Japan, ir seemed that Tokyo was not only the front runner, but the ONLY runner!

I guess you haven't been watching much TV then. It seems like the coverage here in Japan was dissecting every chance that the Japan Olympic committee had of getting the bid. On Mezamashi they had Japan in fourth place with Chicago (which they got wrong) and Rio on top. The whole week was nothing but story after story about these four candidates. Heck, I even saw where they showed Nadia Comaneci and Jackie Joyner Kersey getting ready for their flight to yesterday's ceremony. All last week and previous weeks were stories showing the shanty towns of Rio, and the massive subway created in Madrid.

Criticising Obama for the result is even more pathetic than sore losing

Good point. I saw a Yahoo news article balking "Why Rio?" as if Chicago should have won out. It's sour grapes if you ask me. Congrats to Rio.

Congratulations to Rio! It would have been nice to also see it in Madrid, since they have a lot of the infrastructure (e.g. a subway system to all potential Olympic venues) already in place. It was good to see the country with the largest support get the bid. I remember seeing a poll taken in each candidate country, and Rio had the most support amongst its people. Japan had the lowest support; at about 50%, with the U.S. a close second. Which means you'll see a lot of the general populace breathe a sigh of relief of not having the Olympics and more white elephants in Tokyo. Hopefully, this Rio win will help the people of Brazil. Rio has many beautiful sights, but it also has a great deal of poverty to deal with.

But then again, overall, I do prefer products from Hitachi and Panasonic a lot better.

Um, have you ever heard of "Sony Time"? Sony products stop working at a pre-determined time. I had a Sony Cybershot digital camera. I harldy used it.

I guess my Sony CD walkman which I've been having and using since 1998 is not a real Sony then. It's amazing that it still works after 11 years in use.

Is this the same Brian Runge who was involved in the chest bumping incident with Mets manager Charlie Manuel last year? Is this also the same Brian Runge who was also involved in an altercation with Milton Bradley, two years ago? Not to mention another run in with Twins manager Ron Gardenhire last year.

Seems like trouble follows this umpire everywhere.

If she was taking drugs in order to boost her testosterone levels, then she that is illegal and she should be stripped of her medal. If it is a birth defect, then she shouldn't. After all, they don't strip medals of champions with birth defects, such as a hole in the heart, stunted growth, if they are too tall, and so on.

Japanese kids have got to be messed up with all the importing of foreign 'holidays'

I totally agree. Enough with the Halloween and Christmas. They should just stick with the traditional Japanese holidays. I never liked the costumes at Halloween here, and hate it when KFC has long lines on Christmas day (although I am glad that Christmas hasn't turned out like it is in America, where it is now just a time to showcase a ton of commercialized college football bowl games, year after year).

I look forward to New Year's a lot more, with the traditional "ozoni" and "hatsumode" at a local shrine (since lines at major shrines are too long) with the free "amazake" and "mikan". It's also nice to see the little kids dressed up during the celebration of "shichi-go-san". Mickey should wear more kimonos and yukatas. That would be much better.

Here's a clue - we don't need Big Brother to tell us what media we can and can't play.

Exactly. It's the reason why I stopped owning an iPod. It was too restrictive as far as what kind of music I could listen to. Apple needs to realize that it can't impose its tastes on the public. But then again, Steve Jobs and Co. are indicative of Silicon valley: too stubborn and slow to change.

this is news about ****Japanese**-Americans **and how they were treated during WW2.

Good point therealmusashi. But then you went and contradicted yourself by saying this:

I'm glad the **Japanese **can remember this.

Correction: I'm glad the Japanese-Americans can remember this. (since neither the Japanese nor the Americans could give a hoot about the Japanese-American ordeal). Believe me, "Japanese" and "Japanese-Americans" are quite different.

Trying to draw connections between what "Japanese-Americans" think, and what "Japanese" think about this issue (which by the way isn't even mentioned in this article) is like drawing a connection between "Ichiro getting 2000 hits and Japanese war crimes: "Ichiro has an ancestor who served in WWII, thus his ancestor has done some kind of war crime ... BOOM there you have a connection") Heck, I'm sure I could "connect the dots" between President Obama, and war crimes committed by Japan ... if I stretched it far enough.

I'm a big fan of Yukari Nakano too. She is a tremendous figure skater, and often times gets unfairly judged. Yet, she still does quite well in competitions despite the lack of sponsors.

To add, here is a link I found, with some photographs from an internment camp:

    http://www.learningfromlyrics.org/Internment.html

"American citizens of Japanese origin were not even handled like aliens of the other enemy nationalities -- Germans and Italians -- on a selective basis, but as untouchables, a group who could not be trusted and had to be shut up only because they were of Japanese descent..."

Those are facts. Where did you read you information?

The fact is, that children DID die in the internment camps due to inadequate living conditions. As to my source, you should watch the documentary, "Children of the Camps" by PBS (The Public Broadcasting Service). There is even more information about this in Michi Nishiura Weglyn's highly-acclaimed book, "Years of Infamy". Her use of photos and detailed accounts of life in the internment camps are a good read. I highly recommend it.

Surely there's a family out there who has lost someone who would agree that showing the horrors of war has some benefit. Why force that upon an unwilling family?

I agree. Whether AP's intentions were noble or not, they should have asked permission first. It would have been the right thing to do. Now that the photograph is in public domain, I pray that no one will abuse it in any way. Rest in Peace Lance Cpl, Bernard.

One thing that most people don't realize about the Japanese-American internment issue, is that over half of them were children. And although, adults were given the option of receiving some monetary compensation for their internment; children were not; even though they had to go through the same hardships that the adults went through. There were even some cases where in the 10 concentration camps, that children were separated from their parents. Many of these children died, due to inadequate food and stress from living in these conditions.

As far as Ponyo and Japanese movies in general... there is not a heavy demand for these flicks.

Well, if you are talking about a country like South Africa, then yes, there isn't a demand for a movie like 'Ponyo'. The same could be said of this Wolverine movie here; there really isn't a great demand to see it. I know I don't want to.

    Not worth 1800 yen.

Good point. This movie seems like it's probably worth a 200 yen rental. I can think of a ton of better things to do than watching your typical "blow em up with no good dialog and plot" movie.

Anyway, America did compensate them for damages

Not exactly true. Yes, the American government gave them an apology years later, but there was little if nothing in the way of monetary compensation. In fact, the debate still lingers over whether or not Japanese Americans were adequately compensated. Elected officials such as Senator Daniel Inouye continue to battle with the government over this matter. The Japanese Americans still had to struggle to be accepted back into society and earn a living through their hard work.

I think you have been in J-land too long. Your ability to connect the dots, as well as draw meanignful analogies has really declined. First off, the second comment in my post was a generalization about all talento here, not just this gal.

Good point herefornow. The "talento" here, are like the one-hit wonders all over the world. The fact that she picked a name "Britney" mimicking another one-hit wonder "Britney Spears", makes you wonder what is she really aspiring to be. Take note, the Britney Hamadas, Borats, Vanilla Ices, and Hard Gays of the world; don't stick to one gimmick.
