I would love to see Japan become a more international country but that's not likely going to happen until many changes are made.

Good point. I would also like to see Japan become more international. However, I seriously doubt that the vast majority of foreigners would work in anything other than the English teaching industry, or "entertainment" industry. Yet, there are a good number of foreigners who have taken steps to preserve the Japanese culture by learning trades like making tatami mats, rice-paper screens, Japanese lacquerware, and traditional house-building (without the use of nails).

Once Japan relaxes immigration procedures, and foreigners become more open to adopting the Japanese culture and language, it will become a more international country. I'm sure the hundreds of other homogeneous countries in the world (such as Korea, Morocco, Algeria, India, and Poland) will also follow suit.

Japan is NOT an attractive place to live and work for most western foreigners at least

WMD: Why are you still here then?

Good point, seesaw. I often ask myself the question, why would anyone continue to live in a place that they obviously hate, especially when they continue to have citizenship elsewhere (thus making it easy for them to return anytime). I for one would just go back home, if I ever thought it absolutely unbearable to live in Japan. Things that make you go hmmm..

Overall, I would like to see more immigrants allowed in Japan. Of course, it should come with assimilation (e.g. learning the language and customs of Japan), and I'm sure as long as immigration procedures are eased, foreigners would have no trouble doing so. Of course, as foreigners, if we do become Japanese citizens, but remain stubborn to not adopting Japanese practices, then we face the danger of remaining looking and seeming like a foreigner. And who would want to come to Japan to look and see people who they could very well see back in their own country? I mean, I came to Japan to see and talk with people who didn't look like me, or acted like me; to eat food and see sights that I can't see back home. It is the same reasons I go to places like Thailand, India, etc, to experience customs and cultures that are unique to their own country.

Bottom line is, if more immigration allows the preservation of culture, then I'm all for it.

Glad to see this scumbag arrested. Yes, it may seem like it took a while to do it, but at least they did get him in the end, and before the 20-year statute of limitations was to run out. After all, there are tons of scumbags out there in the world (not only in Japan) still roaming free. And although it would be nice to see Japan have something similar to an "America's Most Wanted" TV show to help, I have yet to see that show directly lead to anywhere near a 50% arrest success rate. In other words, catching fugitives are not always easy open-shut scenarios. In a sea of people, I can imagine that it would be quite easy to disappear if someone wanted to; especially if they were disquised as one of the many faceless and nameless homeless out there.

but I guess giving Matsui the MVP means we're all square on the internment camps, right?

3-FYI, Matsui is Japanese. The people forced into internment camps were American.

Good point, fightfan2008. I fail to see helloklitty's logic here. The issue of internment camps is something Japanese-AMERICANS are concerned with. Japanese people could care less about this issue.

Although business-wise, it would be an almost obvious move for the Yankee organization, Matsui will definitely be missed by New York fans.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2009/11/05/2009-11-05harperhideki_matsui.html

From an article in the New York Daily News:

"surely Cashman and the Yankees will think hard before they actually let Matsui go off and play somewhere else. Bad knees and all, he's as tough in the clutch as anyone in the Yankee lineup, and he hits lefties as well as righties." "Matsui has also been all class since coming over from Japan in 2003, always putting team concerns ahead of his own." After his MVP ceremony, Matsui was obviously elated, but typically talked more about the team than himself. "This is what I came over here for, to win a championship," he said. "Winning the championship means everything to me."

He doesn't have to say anything in English - he's never said anything in English - why start now? He homered, doubled and singled. Nuff said!

Good point. Some players talk and talk about the things they can do. Matsui just lets his bat do the talking.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I remember how after every season, he would remain adamant that his dream was to win a championship with the Yankees. Never heard him say anything bad about anyone or anything, nor complain about anything. In some eyes that may seem boring, but to me that is being a true professional. All he ever did was to come to work, do his job, and play hard. Congrats to Matsui!

Wow! Congrats to Matsui and the Yankees. Although I'm not a fan of the Yanks, I have to give credit to the team they've assembled. Good to see such a soft-spoken, low-keyed kind of guy like Matsui do so well (in what may possibly be his last game as a Yankee).

I hope Mr. Brown does better than that Katsuya Nomura dud.

Although Mr. Nomura is not what I would consider a good coach, he is far from a dud. After all, he took Rakuten, farther than it has been than say more established teams like Orix, Hiroshima, and Yokohama. Before Nomura, has Rakuten ever made the playoffs? I think not.

H1N1 sounds so terrible that its got even President Obama declaring it a national emergency. Of course, the reported deaths in the U.S., Japan, and the rest of the world is still quite minimal. Like many posters above have said, gargling, washing hands with soap, and wearing masks, may or may not prevent someone from contracting this new flu. Yet, I'm sure the "placebo effect" of feeling that sense of security, albeit a false one, could help in some way.

They then spit into the sink and leave it there unwashed; there is also no hot water to waste it away with, look at the single cold water faucets.

Good point, bigwave. I've been to several countries in the world, and have seen this phenomenon in every one of them. Why can't people in the world get some common sense in dealing with germs. 99% of the world's public restrooms have no soap. I wonder why that is so.

Ishihara is such an idiot. It's gotten to the point where I constantly see the general public shaking their heads whenever he says anything. The Japanese public is already angry with him for the failed Shin Ginko project. Now they are angry with him for this "pet project" of his. After all, it was only he and he alone who wanted these Olympics. I can already see a lower percentage of public support for his proposed 2020 push. Only 50% of the Japanese public supported a Tokyo Olympics in 2016 and I'm sure even less would support one in 2020; especially if Ishihara is pushing for it.

Thanks for your opinions BlueTiger. Here is a news article backing the figures I mentioned about the low support by Japanese people for the Olympics in Tokyo:

    http://cn.reuters.com/article/olympicsNews/idCNT25653420090502

It states that only 56% had supported it. Of course, the Yomiuri claimed that the figure was 70% (which in my opinion was fabricated to help Ishihara's bid). In any case, it proves that only Ishihara and his government cronies (as well as government-run NHK) supported this bid. It is no surprise that Ishihara took this poll only in Tokyo, and probably only by those close to him. Anyone outside of Tokyo could care less. It is also no surprise that only government-run NHK had Tokyo's chances ranked higher than Rio, while the other networks like Nippon TV, Fuji, and TBS were having Tokyo ranked at the bottom, with Rio, Madrid, and Chicago above it.

It was a beautiful thing to see all of the "Cariocas" celebrating in Rio. Congrats to them! They carry the whole "weight of a proud continent on their shoulders" as was stated by an announcer on the television.

Oh, and by the way, if anything, it was the U.S. news outlets that were touting Chicago as a shoe in for the Olympic bid. In fact, on Yahoo News, they are claiming that this was (and I quote), "one of the biggest upsets in International Olympic voting history" because Chicago was eliminated in the first round.

the media made it look like Tokyo was a sure thing and a shoo-in.

Blue Tiger, which news show was that? The ones I saw showed the public support of the Olympics being held in Tokyo as very lukewarm at best (about 50%). In fact, the only one thinking that Tokyo had any shot of hosting the Olympics was the idiot Ishihara and his cronies. The most positive support I've heard about this Olympics was where several talk show hosts saying that it would work in Japan only if it were held in a place like Fukuoka (NOT Tokyo). I would have to agree with that. Having the Olympics in Tokyo would not work and I'm glad it wasn't chosen as such.

If you watched the news program ZERO on Nippon Television (Channel 4 at about 11:00pm every night) last week, you would've seen several lengthy pieces on the infrastructure which has already been in place in Madrid. That's how I found out about the subway they have which many Spaniards love and which would've been convenient to use if Madrid had gotten the bid. They also showed the good and the bad of Rio with its lovely views of the sea, but numerous shanty towns with poverty everywhere. They also showed a piece showing how money was being spent in Chicago's bid. They even interviewed Nadia Comaneci and Jackie Joyner Kersey before they took their flights to the final presentation before the Olympic voting. Nadia even did the "Comaneci" gesture that Beat Takeshi made popular. In all the shows I saw, they kept showing this chart which detailed the ranking of the popularity and possibility of Tokyo's chances to get the Olympic bid. Every one of them had Tokyo fourth.

In any case, congrats to Rio. They deserved it since it has never been held in South America. Many Japanese stations were also saying that Rio deserved to host it since out of all of the candidates it was their turn. After all, Japan just hosted the Winter games in Nagano (1998), the U.S. just had the summer games in 1996 and winter games in 2002, and Spain just had the summer games in 1992. It was about time for a change, in not only country, but continent.
