Alright, I know this is deviant from the current mindset that is being built today, but I don't think corporal punishment is that bad a thing (in this case, it wasn't much called for). I certainly don't think kids are all innocent and I do think they learn from an old-fashioned straight forward punishment.
The whole business where kids are way overly protected from all the "evils" in the world are turning them into exactly what people are complaining about nowadays. They can now get away with so much, not allowed by law to be effectively reprimanded (like they care if you say "you shouldn't do that"). Kids are not idiots that have no idea what's happening around them. They are opportunists and learn very quickly. There are limits on what you should be able to do to them, but there should be limits on what you can't.

I'm not sure what all this implies. Are only "adults" allowed to drink or smoke or vote? I think voting should start younger (than 20), drinking later, and smoking later also. But what does this age change do?
Much agreed. Also, it sounds kind of cheesy to mix up some well-known Japanese word into English unless you are referring to the Japanese mindset of what the current meaning of "Gaijin" implies.

Dang, people... No sympathy at all just because of where they live? Pakistan is not a country of terrorists. Nor are many countries in that region that are unfortunately plagued by extremist terrorists. These are likely people who are fighting against it (being from the government). You can be pretty cold just because of their unavoidable circumstances.

It's good to see women of other countries are not as keen on keeping quiet about such matters. But I am sure it'd have to be more than a "woo" to be anything worth mentioning to the public. If she couldn't just get up and walk away from the situation, then, yeah, it's harassment.
In any case, I am almost surprised not to see any "foreigner causing problems" remarks. Oh wait, is it because he was Japanese and not a "foreigner" like the rest of the world? Good time to turn the tables here.

The image of a person dead sprawled on the floor is pretty shocking. It may wake some people up to the matter, which is what news is supposed to do. It prevents this story from becoming a simple statistic.

How unfortunate that that is true. Taught to be selfish and you become liable for whatever goes wrong (or sometimes in trouble if it was right) if you attempt to help. Sickening deviation from humanity.
This is the breakdown of this family unit indeed. However, this is certainly not the norm nor the breakup of the family unit of Japan. However, since we don't know the whole story, it is possible her boyfriend/sex friend/whatever didn't even know about the pregnancy. She may have been trying to keep this secret. Of course, the guy might have left her, leaving her to deal with the situation on her own.
In any case, it is sad that the victim in this situation is always the child. No chance at all.

As you may have heard from other posts, people are not allowed to be good samaritans in Japan. You may become liable for too many things.

All it takes for me is to stay up until local bed time if I gain time. If I lose time (a lot of time), then I will stay up for another day. After sleeping it's all good.

It's hard to believe some people have the nerve to defend Japan in some of their treatment of asylum seekers. If you say Japan shouldn't have to accept them, then Japan should have said so! It's one of many fronts I've seen with Japan dealing with foreign peoples. They say one thing and do another. They appear to be cooperative on paper, but it doesn't always materialize.

It's very hard for me to bring this to the fault of the parents. We're they offered or had available services that would be able to give proper attention to their son? If not, they weren't left with much choice. Like it is said, "Better to be standing before 12 than carried by 6." I agree with that 100%.
"They" are the same fools who make words taboo for no good reason other than "they" have nothing better to do. "Retard" may have been the proper word to describe his condition or it may not be. However, terms like mentally challenged or physically challenged (or whatever people arbitrarily decide not to be offended by nowadays) are useless fluff to describe what they were in the first place. It's like calling a dead person "life challenged." Meaningless.

Unfortunately true. It may have been a true accident where the situation was all against the driver and the kid (may not) and this would have cost the driver the rest of his life (whether in jail or with the news following him around) whether it was an accident or not.
While I never drove in Japan (never had to), there are circumstances where people who decide to walk or ride a bike have to be very cautious. Blind corners abound on narrow streets. While I do believe the driver shares this responsibility, the pedestrians are the ones who may not have a second chance. For this reason, I think the responsibility falls heavier on the walkers, though the unfortunate liability will be on the driver (a vehicle is a legitimate weapon after all).

It's more about the child-like instinct to hurt who you don't like. It doesn't have to make any sense to them. Makes them feel better. Too many parents are too childlike to respond to a cry or mistake from a young child to handle it properly...
And the "disciplining" in the news article was probably the best excuse they (parents and therefore the police) could come up with. It really had little to do with it.

Last time I checked, the sex part is not too great in Japan either.
In any case, while location does matter between Japan and America, I'd say it matters far more where IN those countries you have them go to school. You'll have huge differences in quality depending on if you are in Toukyou or in the rural regions. One may be more accepting of (I hate saying this) "halfs" because there are more in the region. Quality and stressfulness of the education can differ as much. In America, the differences are probably greater. Where I went, (only 5 years ago) there were no gangs, I saw very few drugs (only a couple of idiots), bullying was as expected, and there was no rampant sex. We also collectively had the best grades in the state. However, other schools I would deem dangerous to go to.
If you have kids, no matter where you are, it is best to scout out for the best quality. No matter what, kids will deal with hardships and that often helps them to grow up. In America and Japan, those lessons are just differnt.

Ok... texting is understandably BAD. Way different from chatting on the phone which is akin to listening to the radio. Or drinking your drink. Or smoking your cig.

I always find it funny that people have been so influenced by the government pounding this into the thick skulls of society. Why not blame a radio or eating or people watching? As many people as I see driving with a cellphone every day (roughly 1/4 of people in morning traffic), I shouldn't be able to get to work in one piece. Cell phones are not that dangerous while driving. They are simply an easy excuse and society likes when the blame can be so easy.

Aside from the military, they do. They always have. Unless they are in relative concentration camps, kids do what they want when they aren't under watch. And no way in hell you can keep an eye on a teenager until they are adults. Also, what makes you think an adult makes much better decisions?

Wow, people today are especially harsh. We don't even know the whole story! Too many are condemning the son or the parents like barbarians without considering both sides. By the way, why would it matter if they are of the same "flesh and blood". Each person is an individual. Flesh and blood doesn't make the matter better or worse. The parents may have very well been acting in self defense or perhaps the parents disagreed with the son on a matter and lied. It's hard to condemn anyone without more info.
