This is an unfortunate example of a misunderstanding being acted upon too hastily. If he had given the officer even 10 seconds to give a 10 word explanation, none of this would have happened.

The promoting company actually hires people to come and cheer for the actors.

    That would be pretty sad.

I don't understand why people are still digging up a past that has already been dug up, dusted, and polished. Give it about 20 more years and all those involved will either be dead or too old to care and this will become another sad statistic in the numerous shortcomings of humanity. This is not the last time we'll see an event like this.

If a couple live together before marriage, they often quite happy together. They get to know the other in a fun way where it's all giggles and play. This is the problem.

After marriage, many people subconsciously expect things to get better or change in some kind of way. And it doesn't. You are the same two people and you two will eventually wake up from the honeymoon dream that you were in. This often ends up making the marriage disappointing and results in stupid arguments.

As for the adage -- it's not a philosophy -- "the nail that sticks up, gets hammered down," what does an expression of social pressure to conform have to do with romanticized notions of suicide as a legitimate way out of difficulties?

Do you not realize that is what the entire article was explaining? People not being able to live life because they have to conform. Those who cannot deal with this loss of "life" commit suicide instead of living life without "life".

As for the adage -- it's not a philosophy -- "the nail that sticks up, gets hammered down,"

This IS a philosophy. It deals with the "problem" of people not conforming to the ideals of the group oriented mindset of the "Japanese way." Because this directly interferes with one's desire to commit to their individual desires, it often develops into a strong depression.

I would have turned the iphone off and kept the earphones in... that would be a great test.

Also would have made a fool out of the man.

It's not the fact that it's a girl that shocks me. Not even the fact that the victim was beheaded shocks me; it is that it is 2010, we are massively technologically advanced yet we still kill each other. Can we fix what we humans are?

    Humans will always be humans.

Has suicide been ruled out? I mean according to the desperate living conditions described anything is possible?

It's rather difficult to stab one's self and then drag yourself to the pool to die. I'd say it's ruled out.

Another DS? Do we really need another DS? Need to work on a new console or at least third party games. My first DS works just fine. No need for another one.

Why make something else when the first item is still at the top of the market? DS has room to grow still and I hope this 3-D thing sounds as good as it is.

Will this thing be unplayable for the visually impaired, or will there be some way to show both sets of pixels to the same eye? I'd hate for 3D-only to become the new standard. The perfect-eyesight people don't seem to be clamoring for it, and those without would be frozen out of one of their favorite hobbies.

It'd be the same as in real life. Depth perception will be mostly lost but everything should still be as clear. I don't see where the problem lies... Unless they use the actual 3D mechanic in the game as part of the game...

Ugh, James Cameron has a lot to answer for. I hate 3D.

Real life must suck for you. 3-D things everywhere!

Alright... so when did he try snatching the bag? This IS supposed to be a robbery attempt, right?

That's what I was thinking. They say it was attempted robbery, but they do not really place a point in the sequence of events for the actual robbery.

Gurukun, with your logic, I hope you do not get into the justice system.

Kinda sucks to have to travel that far just for a 15 hour visit... Either he's a really busy man or he wants to get out of there asap.

I don't want a wii imitation to replace my wii controller... It looks the same (maybe a little worse), acts the same (should work as good if not better), but what is special about it?

I think Microsoft has a good idea entering into the motion market with their Project Natal.

The freedom of speech can only be enjoyed by those of reasonable mind, the people who can readily tell libel from truth or infantile harrassment from the threat of violence/material loss. But of course, we doubt that most of us possess that kind of intelligence, that's we have laws of demafation and harrassment that curtail free speech.

You draw a hazy line there. Where one would say that some content is proper, another would find atrocious. Who's to say what constitutes as "reasonable" when sharing an opinion under free speech? Under extreme circumstances, even harsh or violent criticism is needed to curb bad laws or oppression (of course this is not really the case in Japan atm).

Freedom of speech should, imo, itself be left unhindered, and actions afterwards be dealt with accordingly. If we begin to muffle people down to the roots for what some think wrong, it'll only get worse when the mufflers get bigger and stronger.

Interesting read. It offers a little insight to a culture where such complaining and openness is somewhat taboo. It allows for a much needed social vent.
Also interesting, is that the public media actually takes notice to some of the criticism displayed on these boards. I actually find it more powerful than several political venues people think they have to take to give an opinion.

Wow, from this picture, if it was captioned with some random "Girl model struts her stuff on stage...", I would have never thought that that was a man...

Kind of scary now that I think of it...

Gaga and Woods. I've never seen their work, but I still hear way too much about them.

Ebi-chan, why is a 30 year old called -Chan?

-chan can simply be a term of endearment. It is not necessarily a term for little girls.

A Tokyo divorce lawyer the magazine talks to speaks of women who come in asking, “Is there a legal way to make a husband vanish?”

There may be, in fact. Article 30 of the Civil Code says that if a husband has not been heard from in seven years and it cannot be determined whether he is alive or dead, the wife can obtain an appropriate declaration to that effect, which frees her to take possession of her husband’s property, and to remarry if she has a mind to.

Does this go both ways, or is it only women who are given the incentive to commit the perfect murder?
