-- Is this how we explain their response to the Tsunami? Very little gets done either way - apart from squabbling like kids and vying for 'power'.

Any normal member of the public would be held in a detention center until the trial reaches its conclusion.
Also 'stop this trial immediately' is a pretty crappy defence.

This was a good thing to do, but the "I’m all alone and don’t have a future" part worries me.
I hope this person isn't contemplating suicide... and if they are then I hope that any open praise of their generosity will change their mind.

Childish approach.
Believing something is safe does not mean it is infallable, and you want to keep any risks as small as possible. Building a nuclear powerplant next to Tokyo would be like placing a baby's crib next to a stove. Even if the stove is pretty safe, it's just an unnecessary risk.
Also, ridiculing people and name-calling (regardless of how inept those people may be) will just undermine your stance.

Call me unorthodox, but I actually think these firework displays would SAVE ELECTRICITY.
The logic being that when hundreds of thousands of people are outside fuelling the economy, they are not at home running their hudreds of thousands of Aircon units and TVs.
Come on Ishihara, stop being a killjoy you old fart!

Horrific,
However - JapanToday - Even if this was the way the scene appeared, don't you think the phrase...
'arrivals terminal into a smoky, blood-spattered hall of dismembered bodies, screaming survivors and abandoned suitcases'
... is a little too vivid?
