Unless this poltroon has been hospitalised with self-inflicted lacerations from a ceremonial sword, we can swat away any nonsense about "we Japanese have sincere honour..." with the disdain thus merited.

Sarge - seriously, you might want to consider it. It's the typed equivalent of grabbing someone's shirt sleeve and and begging "Huh? HUH?" Each time one makes an even vaguely humorous quip.

Teru - my thoughts exactly. Surely the very essence of hanami is the fugacity of existence. Like the man said:
"So seize we the present, and gather its flowers, For mournful or pleasant, 'tis all that is ours"

And who here has noticed any change whatsoever since the ad was broadcast four times every commercial break? Not me. Still spread-legged oyajis making a seat for seven passengers into a seat for five on the Chiyoda line this morning.

Mod - it took me three attempts to post the above, as the "." was "potentially offensive content". Surely we could relax the rules in these circumstances?

Mod, I have a link for a livestream geiger counter in Tokyo, to help people remain calm. Will you relax your usual policy of nixing links in posts so this useful information can get to everyone? I think it would be in the public interest.

Who mobilised a task force within 8 minutes. Makes the woeful response to Katrina look fairly insipid, don't you think?

I'm very worried that the witless managers of many Japanese companies will not be able to make the leap of logic required to cancel unnecessary activities until the emergency is over, and demand their staff go about the facade of business as usual although obviously the majority of humdrum office workers would be better served looking after their families.
The herd, unused to critical thought, follows orders without question, and heads into town to make gestures of doing their job (dusting things, etc.)
Then lunchtime arrives and there's not enough food to go around. They muddle through, joking about being hungry.
Then, at about 3, the main fault running between the Philippine and Amur plates kicks off, having been weakened at its apex. The line running directly through Tokyo Bay.
That's what I'm most worried about. And that's why my boss and my daughter's headmaster are likely to be disappointed tomorrow.
