Wow, some cynical comments here.
Getting to Amami by ferry, without a car is about 8000 yen. With a car, really isn't worth your while, unless you stay here longer than a fortnight, better to rent a car.
Campsites are often free, or there is an excellent site at Ohama beach, for 300 yen per tent. You can sometimes see dolphins and whales from this beach, and turtles also lay eggs here. Staying at a business hotel, is often as little as 4000 yen per person and includes breakfast.
Maybe do some investigating before writing a place off.
