But she HAS done something admirable. Japanese celebrities have long been forced to remain silent on this issue. Here's one example: When RC Succession did an anti nuke power song in the 80s, their album was pulled and cancelled by Toshiba. USNinJapan2 and other posters need to know a bit more history and background on this issue.
As for the "experts," I recall they were telling us Fukushima was being "stabilized" way back on March 18. What a joke!!

Yeah, those Einsteins at Tokaimura using buckets to mix highly dangerous radioactive materials really knew their stuff. My condolences to their families.

Smorkian: "This is a current radiation spike"
How do you know this is a "spike"? You're certain the level has dropped drastically or will very soon drop drastically? (which is what the technical term "spike" means.) The story doesn't indicate such a thing happening.

>But Japan, not any of the European countries, has been the all-time leader in the number, size, sophistication and prominence of castles since the 8th century.
That is utter balderdash, if not ironic comedy. The writer, an American long living in Japan, needs to take a trip down the Rhine Valley or about hundred other spots throughout Europe for a reality check.
The first (and last time) I went to Osaka Castle, it had modern elevators. I mean, gimme a break.

Yes, Paul, headline is misleading. These were inspections that were expected. A "raid" evokes images of SWAT teams bursting in, chasing the suspects down, cuffing them and hauling them away.

No. Foreign markets are NOT the future for Japanse industry. Not with today's exchange rates and heated competition from Korea and China.
The future lies in Japan's own domestic market, which remains stifled by stupid regulation and frightened, exploited consumers. As for Suzuki, if Japan's expressway tolls were lifted, shaken abolished, more free parking spaces made available, taxes lowered, etc. then the profits would come rolling in.

There have been several robberies by Japanese that are highly violent and shocking in nature. About 15 years ago a Japanese guy tied up and set fire to several female clerks at a neighborhood jewelry store, burning them to death, even worse than the Hachioji horror. In another case, money lenders stuffed 2 (or 3?) women in a barrel of gasoline and tossed a match in, killing them. However, I can't recall foreign theives in Japan ever doing such things.
Still, the fact the Hachioji person hasn't been found may suggest he fled to a foreign country.

Huh? Went I've been there the road from the beach to the Buddha statue is jammed with traffic, with many massive industrial vehicles. The sidewalks are about a foot wide. The little train was also jammed sardine style, like the Yamanote at rush hour.

This is one reason why Japanese trains are more punctual than European trains.
Where was the workers' union in all this? 6.2 million yen is nothing for JR.

@Miamum, yes. Because the Japanese government is the one pitted against the international conservationists, at the IWC, etc. Conservationists dont have a beef with non-whale eating Japanese consumers. In fact, they want to reach out to such people. Tokyo, however, portrays this as a struggle of Japan against the world -- and the Japanese people swallow it whole. ("Brain washing.)
It's similar with the Kurile Islands. 99% of Japanese people have no stake in the issue, but they support the gov't's policy by default, without asking any questions or raising alternatives. A treaty with Russian would open to the door to a flood of investment that would secure oil, gas, and other resources etc. from a nearby country. But very few people here raise that possibility.
The govt may have shafted the people, but the government IS Japanese, and Japanese people by nature are distrustful of foreign people and organizations. That is what sustains Japan's odd and unpopular policies on whaling, etc.

Nope. Not in Canada. The seal hunt and asbestos use have been promoted by the government, which is condemned for its stance by the world community -- and also by most Canadian people. The Japanese people lack this kind of moral strength.
I can think of many other examples of other countries where the common people reject their government's foreign policies. America and the Vietnam war is an obvious example. The Japanese, however, are too brain-washed to make such moral judgments on their own, as this story shows..

If the majority of people here are willing to do something they won't don't want to do for the sake of their government and whalers, that makes them extremely nationalistic -- if not brain-washed. I feel sorry for people who can't make decisions that are in their own interests. If this guy's opinion is right, democracy has failed in Japan.

Japan (Nagano '98) started the cycle of corruption. A Salt Lake City official at the time said its campaign was prompted because "the Japanese were giving away samurai swords and we were giving away cotton candy."

Good idea. Not just Fukushima, but also Tokaimura, Monju, etc. prove that the Japanese authorities can't be trusted to supervise their nuclear power.

Toshimaen management are horrible. They open only on weekends before the schools' summer holidays begin in July, and not in June, when temperatures are 30 degrees or higher. Conclusion: they are willing to do business under highly congested conditions. Many other pools in Japan have similar policies.
Best save your time and money to go somewhere nice like Thailand if you want proper summer recreation.
