Good idea. Not just Fukushima, but also Tokaimura, Monju, etc. prove that the Japanese authorities can't be trusted to supervise their nuclear power.

A Mustang with a 2.0L liter engine and 20% shorter wheelbase would be a hit in Japan, I reckon.

Toshimaen management are horrible. They open only on weekends before the schools' summer holidays begin in July, and not in June, when temperatures are 30 degrees or higher. Conclusion: they are willing to do business under highly congested conditions. Many other pools in Japan have similar policies.
Best save your time and money to go somewhere nice like Thailand if you want proper summer recreation.

Am I the only one who hates touch screens? Whenever I pick up my smartphone, I accidently trigger some unintended function. Further, if the sun is shining, won't the screen be hard to see? Stick to dials and switches.

"Cheap"?!? My electricity bill in Japan is NEVER cheap.
I remember a number of technological breakthroughs in solar power in the 70s-80s. Whatever happened to them? One was a thin, flexible vinyl film that could be integrated into the surface of cars, buildings, etc. The conspiracy theorists claim such technologies were bought out by oil and power companies, as individuals producing their own energy would quickly put the world's biggest corporations out of business. I would like to see some evidence of this, though.
Posted in: It would be a shame not to call the bluff of the nuclear engineers and their 'you need us, and we are the cheapest' slogans.

They can't. The Japanese government won't let them.

I've encountered industrial waste in the water while swimming there. The last time was a ceiling light fixture for an office that I nearly stepped on. I'm afraid to go back.
I also don't like how the beach vendors burn their structures on Sept. 1 and then leave the horrid debris all over the beach, the lack of regular, organized litter collection, the lack of decent facilities for pedestrians (boulevards, sidewalks, etc.) Too bad. The natural setting is beautiful. The human element needs lots of work.

Too bad Yokohama is not Singapore, where the water is actually clean enough to swim in.

sfjp, yes you're partially right. All multinational manufacturers outsource.
However, the 787 was unprecedented in scale. As the LA times reported, Boeing's legendary factory was converted merely into an assembly plant for this project. Different parts from different suppliers from around the world didn't fit properly and delays intensified. And Boeing found out the hard way that profit margins in assembly tend to be a lot less than in manufacturing.
I suggest you Google "Boeing outsourcing disaster" There's plenty of info around on this fiasco.

Increasingly, Boeing is becoming a mere designer-assembler, not a maker. The 3 year delay (!) for the 787 is largely due to the extensive and global-wide sourcing of critical components.
The monozuki-oriented Japanese don't respect this approach, which is why now they're turning to Airbus .

vinnyfav - your views might have been relevant in 1970, but not now. Japan's economy has evolved well beyond the postwar ethos of "export or die" vis a vis domestically manufactured goods. Domestic demand, services, and other components are much more important than before. Depriving the citizens and service industries power would wreak much more profound economic damage than depriving the automakers.

In other words, they wan't to use MORE electricity right at the peak of an energy crisis. Isn't that selfish? Can't they wait til summer's over?

Really intelligent school administrators there. The hot season is clearly the wrong season for this kind of event. Hold it from Oct to April. 'Nuff said.

Is this a joke!?? The Beatles were issued death threats when they played here, and were confined to their hotel rooms out of fear of their physical safety. Some powerful Japanese men objected to them playing the Budokan and for "despoiling" young Japanese women.
What's more, the Beatles were here during a humid typhoon. Their horrid Japan experience was a straw that broke the camel's back in their decision never to tour again, according to a documentary several years ago.

Is this a joke? The bulk of a home's energy consumption comes from climate control, heat and air conditioning, in a climate like Japan's
Mind you, the world's leading makers of insulation, glazing and furnaces are foreign, not Japanese. So expect the Japanese to continue waste energy while staging these disingenuous "feel-good" PR campaigns.
