We can’t afford to trust Japanese credit cards.

My Citicorp travelers cheques weren't accepted in Thailand after the 2008 financial crisis. Big deal. I didn't cry about it and whine about "discrimination" in the tabloid press. Get over it.

Was anyone else annoyed that Anderson Cooper couldn't pronounce "Daiichi" correctly?

I'm annoyed when NHK correspondents can't pronounce the name of my capital city ("rondon"). What's your point?

Nigelboy, thanks, but I can read japanese. Gotta love the language of Japanese bureaucrats, but the last part of the sentence indicates that attempts are currently (現在)being made to tow the water to the site from Yokosuka (location of big naval base)using a US barge or barges to make up for an insufficient amount of water.

This report seems a bit dated, as AP ran a photo of such a water-laden barge already being towed to Fukushima several days ago.

The US Navy had to provide the freshwater for cooling. So I guess if the clowns in charge don't even have water, they certainly ain't gonna have robots.

Then why have I learned nothing from them that I didn't know before March 11th.

Did you know that Tepco dragged its feet for the first 4 days of the crisis, refusing to take aggressive action in order to preserve its equipment, until a team of scientists from the US told them to get their sh*t together? If you knew that BEFORE March 11, you have amazing psychic powers.

Well, I learned that from a US state dept. official interviewed on CBS News, certainly NOT from NHK.

That story is that the world's supposedly most prepared country wasn't prepared at all, and not only at the Fukushima plant.

I think you'll find that angle heavily covered in the foreign media. I've got too many examples/anecdoates to list here, but here's just one: Japanese colleague: "Everything will be fine tomorrow (March 19) Me: Why? JC: Because they're reconnecting the electricity. Me: But the generator and other equipment is probably screwed up after being under salt water, and it's going to take a while to fix anything. JC: No it won't. None of the equiopment is damaged. The foreign media is just exaggerating everything. Me: Umm, OK.

Well, one of us got our info from CNN and the other from the Japanese media.

Some foreign media have been doing a great job. CNN and some other foreign media early on raised alarms in this crisis that were ignored or suppressed by japan's media and public.

This is a serious situation. Describing it as such is not "fear mongering."

That's what people said after the gruesome deaths at Tokaimura.....

    Japan takes disaster preparedness seriously

It's largely a facade. When common fire trucks are used to tame an out of control nuclear crisis, clearly the level of preparedness is severely lacking. Where are the robots, lead-shieled vehicles, and other hi-tech equipment that other developed countries take for granted?

The Kobe quake and Tokaimura have already proved that Japan needs to drastically improve its emergency response measures.

Now, let's see, in both cases, the animal's throat is slit and incantations are spoken to the respective gods. How do you define that as "not the same" and "very different"?

You can split technical hairs all you want, but as a butchery procedure, both are basically the same.

Haalal and Kosher are NOT the same. Very different rules and different procedures.

Wrong again, Zenny11. In butchery, same killing procedure: the slitting of the throat by a single cut.

This isn't the first time Zenny11 has posted wrong info on JT. A bit of knowledge or fact checking would be appreciated.

If people's houses were properly insulated, they would be using a lot less energy, particularly up north.

Muslims believe blood harbors and breeds bacteria and is not good for human consumption.

Modern science believes otherwise. Bleeding animals to death is a bronze-age ritual, concocted in an era long before humans even knew what bacteria was.

I feel apple produts are most like japanese products than other foreigner company.

That's a bizarre perspective. Apple and Sony are a study of stark contrasts. In approach and style, Apple has very little in common with other such Japanese dinosaurs as Hitachi, Panasonic, Sanyo, etc., which were unable to adapt to the IT revolution.

(Apple products) have sped up a process of innovation on other electronic device makers.

Actually, it's the other way round. Apple tends to be a tech late-comer. Intel processors, tablets, smartphones, Mp3 players, etc...they were all around years before Apple rolled out comparable products. Apple doesnt innovate. It refines and markets for its zombie-lemming following.

Smorkian, read my post. I'm criticizing the notion that the cops in this case should be excused for their negligent actions in this case.

While the police were widely criticized, Lloyd Parry presents a more nuanced picture.

"Nuanced"? That girls before were murdered and raped before Lucie and the reports to Japanese authorities were ignored doesn't seem so "nuanced" to me. Clearly, these "nuanced" investigators didnt act until Tim Blackman came to Japan, held a news conference and angrily lashed out at the police, embarrassing them on an international stage.

They then found Blackman's body in a cave in right outside Obara's seaside condo -- the most OBVIOUS place they should have checked in the first place. Nothing "nuanced" about any of this travesty.

Since the iPad’s launch, other consumer electronics makers have been scrambling to develop tablets of their own.

Other makers already MADE tablets long before the iPad appeared. The writer appears to be a typical Mac groupie, with the typically warped and limited view of the world.

Such a hassle. Why doesn't she at least live closer, like LA, which is the center of the US entertainment industry, anyway?
