Japanese nationalism is trendy again! That last time that happened was in the 1930s, and we know what happened as a result of that.

Interesting list. But I think my travel kit ($140 Kindle plus $100 Mp3 player with movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, etc) is a much better package for traveling, in terms of portability, entertainment and price.
Travel tech goods are more prone to theft, loss, and breakage. Best not to bring expensive things, like an $800 ipad.

Japanese people often tell me that their compatriots are not patriotic or nationalistic in any way. However, when I see these kinds of comments - and I see them often - I often feel the Japanese are among the most patriotic and nationalistic people on earth.
It's also an odd attitude for someone who who was depressed for a prolonged period after returning to their home country. I guess she aquiesced to be the nail that got hammered in.
She sure is purdy, though....

Mine are. Paperbacks these days are cheaply constructed. With many of my titles, the binding glue has gone brittle, causing pages to fall out and the newsprint-quality paper is yellowing. After they've been loaned three or four times, they basically fall apart.
E-books, however, are data and thus can last forever.

Why weren't they around when the likes of Taro Aso, Sosuke Uno, Yoshiro Mori and the other real incompetents were in power?
After all, it's the system that those oafs created that Japan is now burdened with.

Writer is too generous. He should ask why the likes of SMAP sing in unison, while overseas counterparts Backstreet Boys, etc., sing in multiple harmonies. The answer: an utter lack of musical ability. There are exceptions, like Utada, mind you. But about 90% of J-Pop deserves to not exist. And that is a perfectly good reason to despise it.

Who are the Michelin inspectors? I think I read that nearly all inspectors were Japanese for the Japanese editions, which might explain why they rate their own food so highly.

ISOLATION NOW! We need to isolate NK. This charade about "engagement" just ain't working, in fact is making the situation worse.
Isolation was effective against Red China during the insane cultural revolution, South Africa during Apartheid, and so on.

Clean, punctual, go everywhere. However, unbearably uncomfortable during rushhour. Singapore's is my all time fav. Bangkok's is awesome too. The individual seating in those systems feels like a luxury after Japan's bench-style seats, where people are squished together.

Good idea. The next big international confabs should take place at Nanking, Pearl Harbor, the site of the Changi POW camp in Singapore, etc. The delegates could spend their free time viewing gory images of the victims of the wartime Japanese.
If Tokyo is truly committed to "peace education" it should push for this kind of idea as well. Somehow, though, I doubt it. Japan wants "peace education," but strictly on its own terms.

Russia's economy is on a roll, doubling in size since 1992. It seems a more confident Moscow is now positioned to bring the islands into the fold with development and investment. As Japan is in decline, and Russia on the rise, Japanese investment no longer looks so important.

Um, yes it is. Garbage bins require regular collection and disposal. Who's going to do it? Traditionally, it's been the job of the burakumin. Nowadays, it has to be done by regular municipal employees (not the garbage collectors), who are resistant to the idea for the cultural reasons. This being Japan, no one confronts the issue, so the result is to do nothing....hence no litter bins.
As for pre 1995, I don't remember many bins then. Beaches, parks were strewn with litter due to the absence, and I remember regularly having to carry garbage home. The Shinkansen and other other landmark sites were different, but 99% of the locations had no bins.

Garbage was traditionally handled by the untouchable "burakumin" caste group. Today's municipal workers refuse to stoop to such duties they see as below them.

Err, like large-scale military invasions of every single one of its neighbors, killing millions of people in the process? Poor, poor, Japan.

Best to avoid integrated PC units. Upgrades and repairs usually mean the computer is gone for a couple of weeks back to the retailor. Expect expensive service bills, just to fix simple things like fans or PSUs.
A couple of friends with iMacs have experienced this nightmare. IMacs are also notorious for overheating, since everything is crammed so tight together. PC towers are the way to go.
