"Discovered murdered"?
I think the translator or copyeditor needs to take a newswriting course.
"Murder is malicious or premeditated homicide. Do not say a victim was murdered until someone is convicted of murder." (UPI Stylebook)

Sell lifestyle, not farming, you muttonheads. Promote mountain biking, surfing, log-cabin houses, wifi networks, cool coffee shops, etc. Make the place fun and relaxing. Then you'll get plenty of young refugees from Osaka, Nagoya and other urban dumps.
Tottori's natural features and climate have a lot to offer young people who value their lifestyle. It seems the people in charge of running the place don't realize that.
Japan needs its version of the Pacific Northwest.

"Candles"? Not installing double-glazing, thick insulation and other measures that Japan's construction industry actively discourages?
I suspect the amount of energy used to air and organize this program will exceed the amount of energy conserved as a result of its activities.

I've rented bikes on numerous occasions in SE Asia. No fuss, no press, minimal cost, if not free. Why is this considered such a big deal when it occurs in Japan, I wonder?

Japan is a terrible tourist destination (apart from Niseko). The experience at sightseeing spots is "look, but don't touch." The attitude of operators is one that limits customers' choices, ignores their individual preferences, and refuses adoption of modern conveniences (ie, free wi-fi at inns).
Maybe not surprising, when the average age of operators in the rural areas is about 80.
I enjoy working and living in Tokyo, but when comes to tourism, I spend all my yen in SE Asia.

My solution: Make rural places nice places to live. Then more young people will want to take up farming or work in food cultivation industries.
As it is, rural Japan is a depressing, desolate place, still ruled by oppressive and reactionary attitudes.

Vending machines do away with human interaction. That's why the Japanese embrace them. Better to deal with a machine than a real person with real emotions.

Why is this a surprise? US corporations are amid a wholesale transplant of thier manufacturing and IT capabilities overseas, mainly to Asia.
Almost everybody and everything in key industries in America are destined to have their jobs outsourced overseas, if they havent gone already.
However, the day that politicians, corporate CEOs and senior bureaucrats can be outsourced is the day outsourcing will become regulated. Until then, US corporations (sorry, "multinationals") will be flogging US industry to the highest bidder.

Parallel history to fish and chips in England. The batter was originally a covering, meant to protect and keep the fish clean. It was discarded, not eaten. However, people started eating the batter, and history was made.

I don't get it. Why do you want tennis shoes to be easy to get in and out of? Tennis sessions typically last around two hours. The roles of tennis shoes and house slippers are completely at odds with each other.

Another pathetic band-aid approach, despite the good intentions. A better idea is to install litter bins throughout the beach area and hire a regular force of custodians to manage the waste and wardens to hand out mandatory fines to litterers. At least that's what happens in other developed countries. I rarely, if ever, see it here. I also see lots of filthy beaches here.

It's a shame that access to that big beautiful green space in Tokyo's center is so restricted to the public. Jogging THROUGH the park on grass would be so much nicer than AROUND the park on concrete sidewalks.

about a third of the world's most cutting-edge drugs are unavailable in japan due to restrictions, according to Phrma. it's a similar situation with medical devices. Unless Japan reforms its procurement methods, patients best stay away and go instead to Thailand.
This is an odd story, given that gaijin forums are filled with horror stories about experiencing Japan's healthcare system.

Ah, the cuisine that gave us cup o noodle. dried chemicals in a styrofoam cup is about as bad as "food" gets. sushi and sashimi are fantastic, most of everything else in Japan is greatly overrated.
