Um, for the States at least, trains are not a big part of the transportation infrastructure.

Yes they are. America's vast network is a major carrier of freight.

Why English? There's a perfectly good japanese word, 麻薬, for narcotics.

Is the ministry connecting criminal vices with foreign countries? Seems like it. Similarly, the cop cars have "POLICE" written in larger font than 警察. Given that 98% of population are not native English speakers, this seems weird, if not suspicious.

...in other countries...where fried foods form a larger part of the diet than they do in Japan...

Is that true? Katsu (breaded, deep fried) stuff seems to be a favorite bento compoent, while tempura is among the most popular foods. Tonkatsu is really deep-fried chunks of meat(!) and a lunchtime staple here.

UnagiDon - Interesting interpretation of my comment. I pointed out a technical error with the research in the JT commentary and provided some background and context to the survey. And you see that as "kneejerk" and based on my own "miserability index." LOL!

Methinks you're the one with the chipped shoulder, judging by your own dour and highly judgmental post.

A local bar owner is a "businessman"? I suppose, but in a story like this, my image of a "Japanese businessman" is a guy wearing a suit and working for a corporation.

The livable "survey" was produced by small independent Monocle Magazine, not the mighty Financial Times. Hardly in the same league.

Henry Hilton needs to do his research. Mind you, based on his previous columns, this blunder is characteristic.

Monocle's founder is a hard-core Japanophile, whose trendy/artsy magazine has an odd obsession with the shinkansen, the city of Fukuoka and other Japan-geek subjects. His livable "surveys" always seem to reflect his own Japano- Euro-centric preferences. Hmmm.

Much crime is not reported, I suspect. In advanced countries like the US, police only get to hold suspects for 48 hours, by which time they must file formal charges.

In Japan, they get 3 weeks. So for crimes like theft, public nuisance, etc, they keep someone in jail for a couple of weeks "to teach 'em a lesson" then let 'em go with no charges filed. Thus crime stats are unaffected and Japan appears as "safety country."

Formal charges require paperwork, lawyers, etc., which cops here prefer to avoid.

Mac has been rolling out a series of massive security patches the past year for OS X. I guess MS is just trying to catch up.

To whit, "Apple rolled out Java security updates for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 late Monday afternoon. Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Update 9 and Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 patch a series of flaws that could let a remote attacker gain elevated privileges or execute arbitrary code on the victim's computer.

The security updates address issues in Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.7 where attackers could use untrusted Java applets to gain elevated privileges on a victim's computer, or where visiting a Web site containing a maliciously crafted Java applet could let an attacker run arbitrary code with the victim's current privileges."

And so on, and so on.....

8 hours on a bus. Make that 10 hours for getting to Tokyo Station. Not worth it for a weekend break. Especially when you spend Mon-Fri. commuting on public transit.

she was having headaches and felt like she had no energy at times.

If she'd have gone promptly to a hospital, had it checked out, and rested, she'd probably be here today. I know too many people in Japan who feel that work is more important than health. Crazy.

U.S. AIRWAYS has the best. The crash of the US air jet in the Hudson River earlier this year and the highly professional and flawless evacuation of all passengers convinced me of that. I'd like to see the high-heeled, sarong-wearing o-jousamas on JAL, Singapore, Thai, and other Asian airlines perform under such conditions.

For those wondering why we should care, Ishihara recently blew the lid off the Japanese entertainment world in a book, alleging rape, etc, and naming some famous names. She told this to the foreign media at the correspondents club: http://www.e-fccj.com/node/1687

Disappearing now does seem a tad suspicious.

JT, it would be nice if you provided a modicom of context to such stories.

What do you expect with the rapid turn around ... Whereas the major airlines keep their planes sitting around for days or weeks in air-conditioned hangars? Yeah, right.

Who is doing the "lecturing"? Who? Come on, Henry, give us some NAMES. Give us some titles, specific quotes, etc. Otherwise your "commentary" is really a chauvanistic rant.

    Another note:

no one country is coming out of the global downturn with much to its credit

Wrong again. Canada has been praised by analysts for its past and current policies.

The use of "ancient" here is misleading. Technically, it means the period ending nearly 2,000 years ago. "Medieval" would be the correct description in this article, especially as Japanese civilization didn't even exist during ancient times.

Right on. I might add highway lanes. They seem much narrower here than overseas, including other Asian countries. My Japanese girlfriend and I wondered about this while in Bangkok. Can anyone confirm?

Long-distance driving on a highway while having to take constant care to stay within a narrow lane seems like another needless frustration.
