herefornow - Western influenced beauty is the ideal in Japan.
Rie Miyazawa, for instance, seen as the quintessential Japanese beauty in the late 80s, had a Dutch father. Enlargened eyes light brown hair, long skinny legs, pale skin, etc, are considered the ideal. Where do you think such influences originated from?

Underwhelming, if not disappointing. In other words, a typical Japanese tourist spot.

There's absolutely no point using any MSN Web services. Whenever I go to an MSN or Microsoft site, I get nothing but densely written Japanese language content, even though I'm not Japanese! I mean, WTF?!?!

Badge 213: Skyliner and Nex only leave once an hour. Thus, it's taken me up to 3 hours to get home in central Tokyo, "depending on traffic conditions."

Bobo, I lived in Osaka in 1986. I recall at the time reading an interview with Ridley Scott in which he said he was inspired by Hartlepool's urban decay but that Blade Runner's the cityscape and look was inspired after a trip to Osaka.

"The “Blade Runner” district"? Wrong again. Ridley Scott's inspiration was Osaka, not Tokyo, for the Blade Runner setting.

Nice initial response from the cabin attendant. "We're here for your safety" is a slogan they use on one certain U.S. airline. Yeah, right.
Interesting story, but what was the airline?

You gaijin posters don't seem to realize the suffering that China and the rest of Asia endured during the war. The Japanese killed about 10 million Asians. For Japan's current leaders to formally honor those responsible is reprehensible.
And yes, it IS comparable to today's German Cabinet members praying to the souls of Hitler and the SAS.

I frequently wirelessly download software directly on to my PC netbook. I think JT's tech writer needs a reality check. He makes such misleading statements on a regular basis, usually to promote a Crapple product.

"Macs have a reputation of being machines for designers, engineers, architects, etc."
Nope. Industries rely very heavily on PCs, especially as servers, and industry use is largely behind the PC's massive market share of over 90%. MACs largely cater to brand-conscious kids who want to be trendy.
PC architecture boasts off-the-shelf parts, etc, which makes it relatively easy and economical for industries to upgrade and maintain.

What happens before and after "beach season"? Whenever I've gone to a Japanese beach outside of that time, it's covered with garbage, and accommodation and restaurants are non-existent.

Doesn't help this Canadian - all slots at Narita have long been filled anyway. How about pushing for greater capacity at Japan's main international airport, or Haneda?

"For the life of me I can't understand why they don't make more of an effort to seel their phones there"
I know why - it's called competition and innovation. J makers missed the Smartphone and other developments, while the foreign makers are technologically farther ahead. My Samsung, for instance, is the world's thinnest 3G handset ever made.

Almost none of today's hi-tech innovations have come from Japan: personal computers, the Internet, e-mail, the Web, cell phones, e-commerce, IPods, digital-music download services, they were all invented in the U.S. and elsewhere.
In software development - perhaps the globe's most strategic technology - Japan doesn't even rank. There ain't no Silicon Valley here.
Those patents mostly represent incremental developments on innovation created elsewhere. Panasonic and others simply have the money and power to invest in armies of patent lawyers and in the patent process.
