Almost none of today's hi-tech innovations have come from Japan: personal computers, the Internet, e-mail, the Web, cell phones, e-commerce, IPods, digital-music download services, they were all invented in the U.S. and elsewhere.

In software development - perhaps the globe's most strategic technology - Japan doesn't even rank. There ain't…

Naeba used to be horribly crowded. Not it's reasonably crowded, and so they want to curtail operations. Typical.

That's one reason I spend most of my travel dollars in Thailand and elsewhere. The travel operators in Japan are happy only when they can squeeze hordes of people into tiny, confined…

"grenade-like" means it's not a grenade. To whit, "He is LIKE a clown." That means the subject is not actually a clown but resembles one in certain ways.

So I wonder what this thing was?

...the controller ordered the JEX pilot to overshoot the runway.

Wow, that IS scary. The story is underwritten. Should be, "A JEX airliner was forced to fly over an ANA airliner while landing, when the ANA plane taxiied onto its runway.

for most who commute every day at least twice

Um, it's a Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. Few of us commute on such an expensive route "twice a day." Hence, the silliness of having a monthly fee system.

the letter's are not separated by any punctuation marks so, it is not an acronym

I'm afraid you're wrong, Onewroldneppl. According to AP style and many other style rules, acronyms of 3 letters or more (UNESCO, etc) don't require periods.

I hope you don't teach English for a living.
