The woman may be in the wrong. She was "walking along a highway," which sounds highly dangerous and illegal, especially at night.

the gaming scene seems pretty backwards in japan these days. While everyone else around the world is doing online simulation and in-your-face action games with dense graphics, the Japanese are fiddling around with kiddy games played on Gameboys. One commentator said xbox 360 isn't selling in Japan because it's too sophisticated for Japanese gamers.

Why does a machine operated by a private corporation have a public surveillance camera?!? I would paint the lens black too. Then set up my own camera inside Coca-Cola's headquarters office.

Blackflag, Those results came immediately after a big price cut. It's doubtful whether such a surge is sustainable.

The Japanese authorities have banned those Seques from city streets. Too bad, since they're ideal for japan's high-density cities, being eco-friendly, silent, compact, etc. Unfortunately, Japanese companies had no role in their development or manufacture, hence the ban.
I see plenty of them in Bangkok.

    Chibaman,

So from Feb. to April, the sex was arranged through means other than online dating? If so, what was it and why doesn't the story specify it?

Sorry, that's anything but a "clarification."

    Attention editors, Story contains error/contradiction:

"to have sex with men...between April 27 and June 19."

"was forced have sex with several men almost everyday since February"

So which is it? since febuary or April?

I'll miss the old National brand. It had a quaint Stalinist ring to it.

If they installed garbage cans and ran a municiapal garbage pick up service - as is done is every OTHER developed country - then such one-off, band-aid efforts wouldn't be needed.

The wife of one of karoshi victims was quoted as saying that there's no "secret" to Japan's or Toyota's economic success. The secret, she said,is to work your people, literally, to death.

Burikko, I think they do know. Whenever I go hiking in Okutama and other natural places in Japan, I always see a disproportiately high number of foreigners.

BTW, the destruction of Japan's forests has been directed by the government, but the local people who carry it out do not seem to oppose it.

"Smart phones can make business easier as users can send and receive emails, view attached files and create documents."

Should be rewritten as, "Smart phones can make LIFE easier..."

Smart phones also highlight the relative uselessness of conventional Japanese handsets.

Odd that something who's lived so long in Tokyo and Japan bemoans Phuket's "overdevelopment." The population centers of Phuket are not pristine, But still, I can snorkel off the island's beaches and see thousands of fish, go jungle trekking, and wander along largely empty beaches that stretch for 10 kilometers or more in the island's north. And unlike in HOnshu, there isn't a concrete tetrapod or concrete embankment to be seen. Just white sand, palm trees and the odd vendor's shack.

...before rivals, including Nokia Corp. of Finland and South Korean Samsung Electronics Co., dominate

But Nokia Samsung and other non-Japanese makers DO dominate the global market already.

How often does this happen in Japan? We're only hearing about this mugging because of the unusal angle of the story.

Friends in Britain say such housing estate muggings underscore their country's descent into hell. But I suspect they occur in Japan frequently as well, but are not reported by the police, as in the UK. I know that rapes regularly go unreported to the media "to protect the individual's privacy." The police admit as much.

All the ground floor units in my building have metal bars over the windows and the neighborhood detached houses have SECOM security systems and are set behind concrete walls, some topped by barb wire. Is this what to expect in a "safety country"?
