Buying Japanese nuke power equipment?!? Yeah, right. I hope the Vietnamese are prepared to compensate their coastal farmers and fishers and live with contaminated food and water when the XXXX hits the fan. Vietnam's coast gets some nasty, nasty typhoons.

the Apple bashers are out in force!

Actually, the hating started when someone called Samsung handsets "crap." The "bashers" are responding using logic and citing examples.

In fact, the hardware specs between Iphone and the Galaxy are very close, while iphones have been plagued antenna problems that other consumers would never tolerate. "Just hold the handset differently" Hahaha!, good advice!

Again, it's a case of Apple fans living in fantasyland. Enjoy the purple Kool-aid!

This is why I will never drive in this country. I refuse to be arrested for another person's stupidity or carelessness.

A product to encourage anti-social behavior. Amplifying noise at the beach, park and other public spaces is rude and selfish. There's too many such people in this country, as it is.

I thought all this exotic outsourcing was to spread risk in the supply chain. Instead it's made it more vulnerable. Nowadays, whenever there's a storm somewhere in the world, manufacturers lose massive amounts of money. This hardly ever happened pre-globalization, and the local people could keep their jobs, too.

Keep your assets safe at home, is what I say.

Just make bike lanes, dammit! Holland, a far more densely packed nation than Japan, can do it, why not here?

Isn't the the bulk of the dangerous work being done by day laborers getting about 10,000 yen a day, no benefits and suits held together by masking tape?

They won't be invited to any royal ceremonies soon.

My wife was watching this on TV. Natsuki was acting like a total wingnut. It was really embarrassing.

Many of Michelin's reviewers in Japan are Japanese, apparently. So it makes sense they rate themselves so excessively high. From preschool and onward, all Japanese are brainwashed to believe that their food is the world's best.

Additionally, there is no such thing as a critical review in Japan. I used to buy restaurant guides in Japanese, but they were useless, as their "reviews" were really just advertising.

I'd take Bangkok over Tokyo for food any day.

"Fire trucks"?!? Japan needs to go on a shopping spree in France for some dedicated equipment, not just rely on improvised gear designed for a vastly different purpose. That's one reason this problem has festered for so long.

Japan's reluctance to procure from abroad hurts the country and its people in more ways than one.

    The government is suck .

The government didn't cause the worst rains in 50 years. Cambodia is suffering similar damage, so it's not fully a function of the government policies.

The news last night said the flood barriers constructed during the past week are holding and preventing greater damage in Bangkok. Thailand should have constructed such anti-flooding infrastructure 10-15 years ago or so. So blame the governments that were in charge back then.

Chua blamed America's fear of Asia

That fear is completely understandable. The future is shaping up to be a grim nightmare for the West: billions of people worldwide jockeying for fewer and fewer resources and opportunities. But, hey, this is exactly what big business wants. The top 1% will prosper, the rest will suffer.

******Who is to blame, the driver or the parents?**

Maybe no one is to blame. Maybe it was just an accident. Maybe the kid is to blame for reckless driving? Maybe it's really not relevant in a case like this.

構造計算書偽造問題 - architectural forgery. It's so widespread in Japan, it's got its own word.

Japan's public buildings have improved but they still aren't up to international standards. I always shake my head at the Hamatsucho Monorail station connecting Haneda aiport. It's up 3 floors but has one tiny and slow elevator hidden aruond a corner. Go there at any given time, and you seen crowds of people - the elderly, girls -- hauling all their luggage up 3 flights of concrete stairs. Only in Japan.

That they were consuming technology in ways that would have been unimaginable without Jobs

That's an odd statement. MP3 players, smartphones, etc. were around several years before Apple rolled out its equivalent products.

I thought Kamakura was a dump. The roads clogged with traffic, including industrial sized trucks, locals telling us we couldn't take photos, the Enoden train more tightly packed than the Yamanote at rush hour, and a black beach strewn with garbage.

A few pedestrian malls, green boulevards and wider sidewalks wouldn't go amiss in that cramped and dingy tourist trap!
