"Their growth has to be restricted in the concrete city, since the roots cause irreparable damage if they are allowed to grow freely"
That makes no sense. The world's best developed cities, like Singapore and Vancouver, have massive trees along their boulevards with long branches without "irreparable damage." How does the cutting off of branches and leaves affect the underground roots, not to mention shaving down the hedges?!?!

...- they should have lighter clothes for summer
They should learn a lesson from the colonial British and French of years past. Short trousers, short sleeves, light khakis and pith helmets. The helmets are a brilliant design - they keep sun off the head while creating air circulation around the head due to the space between it and the helmet's shell . The Vietnamese, a pragmatic people, still wear 'em.

"How on earth is Canada rated with those others for high-risk"
The Cascadian subduction zone lies right off Vancouver Island, and a massive earthquake there is overdue. When it happens, say goodbye to much of Metro Vancouver, Victoria and communities across Vancouver island.

Work crews in my Tokyo neighborhood have spent the summer destroying the tiny amounts of existing greenery, making the heat even worse, the morons.
Tree branches are constantly being cut off and hedges shaved down to a few centimeters high. Massive construction projects, meanwhile, are in full swing, pouring more and more concrete.
Now the only shade we get is from the buildings, and so we basically don't go outside unless necessary.

Why does "soft tennis" even exist? I don't get it.
It's like a bunch of people got together one day and said, "Right, let's create an inferior version of tennis."

Midquality still digital cameras and up have that resolution for their video and stereo audio these days, and they probably have better lenses. So these camcorders may be useless for most of us.
However, if they have a mic input or some other special feature, that might be interesting.

How when someone in Japan invents something, his Japanese-ness is played up in the media? Americans have been quietly pioneering such drones, but the media doesn't play up their nationality/culture, etc.

Indeed. On Saturday, I saw 2 halogen spotlights burning away outside a real estate office -- in the middle of the afternoon. Look around, and you'll see that people are still using electricity like it's water.

That's not true at all. There's plenty of talk of renewables -- wind, solar, etc. Then there's geo-thermal, which japan's geography is capable of producing. Germany's renewable rate is 17%: Japan can do the same once the vested interests, who have doled out subsidies to the nuke industry, are squashed.
Then there's conservation. Japan needs to assume that electricity is finite, hence, it needs to get rid of its silly consumption of it. Sliding electric doors in millions of shops, self-flushing toilets, and many other completely useless things whose job is to gobble up power need to go.

Steve, the current riots, which are reportedly spreading and intensifying as I write, are not "concentrated on looting." Looting is one of several facets, including violent street confrontations against police by mainly young minority men.
You say "many deaths." How many? The Wiki article titled "1981 England riots" doesn't mention any, though it mentions injuries.

I used to live near the banks of the mighty Yodogawa in central Osaka. It was just a characterless, lifeless and polluted body of water that most residents avoided. Where the banks weren't concreted over, the bushes were a favorite tryst for legions of strange men.

Are you sure about that? It's now a 3rd night of fires, looting and violence taking place in a dozen or so locations as far away as Birmingham.

This is largely a race riot, but I guess that phrase has fallen out of favor.

Where's the damn IAEA!?!?
Vietnam is now reeling from typhoon that killed 100s, and its central coast to prone devastating storms. If the IAEA lacks the balls to ban these sales, then it needs at least to send in inspectors to ensure the Japanese don't place the cooling equipment in exposed locations.

I agree, and would add that all sorts of other services are absent or undermanned here: regular fire inspections, safety inspections, monitoring, drug approval testing, certification, etc. etc.
If there's anything good about Fukushima, it has made the world realize that Japan is still in a state of "catch up" with the West, seriously lagging in many important areas that underpin a developed economy.

Consumers end up being screwed. My air fare for my summer vacation. is nearly double than usual. So I'm being forced to spend more money overall, while the corporations reap the benefits. The fuel surcharge is a big chunk, and whenever fuel prices increase, Exxon and others reap record-high profits. That's a fact, not my opinion.

One of the most devastating natural disasters in the nation's history may had something to do with distracting the administration. I'm just glad we don't have those clowns from the LDP or SDP in charge. Remember the gov'ts response to the 1995 Kobe quake? Now THAT was utterly ineffectual administration.

Gaijintraveller, Actually, the correct date seems to be 1997. From Wiki: "1997: Restoration was completed. The castle is a concrete reproduction (including elevators) of the original and the interior is intended as a modern, functioning museum."
Tourists may as well go to Disneyland.

Exactly Japan's "established experts" should NOT believed. Read up on Monju. The web of lies and cover ups committed by the scientists, operators and technicians throughout Monju's sorry history is documented by the government, which issued reprimands and punishments.
Anyway, I'm tired of supporting my argument by citing such specific examples to prove my point, when CERTAIN POSTERS who argue with me don't even bother -- because they can't.
