What the poll really shows is that the Bush administration caused severe damage to our image overseas.
I just hope that President Obama can get us back to where we were before his second term ends.
You just explained how the Bush administration lost face for our great nation, they did not care about any other nation.
We lost most of South America to the communist and slowly have lost our grip in Asia because of that same mind set.
I do not think they like him much...Under his watch they already lost one of the Bin Laden clan.
Our President has become more of a problem for them in 8 months than Bush was in his 8 years.
I would like to correct your post, the other difference is that President Obama has proven himself to be a talented Diplomat.
That is another thing that the far right does not understand DIPLOMACY. That was also their downfall...
Since the 1950's the world saw us as the friend of all peoples of the world. But when Bush took office that all changed. We went from the friend of the people to the friend of the large companies.
Image is every thing in the war of ideas. Under Bush our image became damaged and the communist and the fanatics took advantage of that.
Correct it was not a huge landslide but the people spoke and the far right lost everything that night. The people spoke and our President won a clear cut mandate from the people that night.
Our nation yelled out with a clear voice,"end the madness of the neo-con movement" and now they are all but dead.
The United States does owe the Bush administration a bit of thanks. If it were not for them and their incompetent running of our country we would never have seen the neo-cons for what they are,"useless".
For that I thank former President Bush and his administration!

Correct when an officer asks for ID you provide it. Prof Gates did just that.
But when Prof Gates asked the officer for his ID the, officer did not provide it. The officer should of provided it but suspected the person was going to complain against him.
So instead of doing what the officer was suppose to do, he decided to arrest the man. So he made the person step outside. At that moment the officer arrested him.
Then he writes out his report tells his "side of the story" and things were suppose to blow over. But, things are just starting to roll. Now the officer has to find an easy way out of this but wont.
The city will get sued and it will have to pay. All this could have never come about if only the officer would not have tried to show his power.
Imagine if this was a minority who did not have money. What do you think would have happened?
This would have gone down as just added to the black crime rate.

Helter_Skelter at 05:46 AM JST - 24th July I bet Gates has experienced unfair treatment throughout his entire life. Huh? The guy's a tenured professor at the most pestigious ivy league school in the nation.
Yes he is and what about his abilities as a professor? Please tell us what you think about his qualifications..
> Helter_Skelter at 05:46 AM JST - 24th July The mean salary of a Harvard professor is about $169,000.
Yes a professor earning that little to teach our future generation. I think most teachers should be paid higher than what we pay them now.
But what does his earnings have to do about his qualifications?
So your saying that he has gotten special treatment sometime in his life? So he could not become a professor at Harvard with out government help?
If you have proof of this please share with the rest of us. Tell us how affirmative actions helped him and when.
To make bold statements like your must be backed up.
Because anyone can say what ever they want about someone with out proof. It get's hard when you have to produce facts about that.
So please tell us when did the good professor get that special help?
Or are you just profiling the professor because he is black? You know, the old far right wing saying that a minority can not make it without affirmative action helping them out.
So please show us your proof...
So Gates benefited from his friendship with the President? So while the President was a powerful Senator he made sure that Prof Gates got taken care of?
President Obama was the junior Senator and he was not that powerful. So how did Prof Gates benefit there?
Helter_Skelter at 05:46 AM JST - 24th July So what's all this "unfair treatment" you're talking about?
Getting arrested at your own home because you asked for the officers ID and badge. I think I would call that unfair treatment.
And when a citizen asks an officer for his name and badge number that officer is also suppose to provide it and say, "Yes Sir, here it is". Prof Gates did his part why didn't the officer?
To protect and serve does not mean you can do whatever you want. You too have to be polite to the people you are helping.
Or are police above all that, are they too special?

Sarge, you are half correct. You know me and what I think of her (as a choice for V.P she is really lacking not to mention a choice for President....ALASAKA! and all) But, where there is smoke there is fire.
She has damaged her cause by her constant mistakes when it comes to the law. Now, please, I am not saying that she has done something wrong. But, if you were a politician and you were in office, would you opened a legal defense fund account in your name. What would people think?
"An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the “official” legal defense fund."
Why would you have too?
Either she has the wrong handlers (which I believe she does) or she is not that bright. What ever is the case, she needs Karl Rove to come and save her.
I am sorry, but when McCain picked her as his VP I thought she was lacking. This just proves to me that she really, really, really needs a whole lot of help....
Someone needs to save her from her home down handlers before her next room is a cell.
She needs better handlers who have a clue about politics. Rather than her home town old friends. If you do not have the common sense to hire experienced people you are open to any form of attacks. This shows her leadership abilities and they are really lacking.
The Republicans need to find folks who know what they are doing rather than folks who they think know what they are doing...
Again I yell out, ALASKA?"

Okay since you asked, have you ever heard of the "seven wonders of the world?"
I am not trying to insult ya.... They were the seven wonder of the ancient world.... They were;
Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Colossus of Rhodes (my favorite)
Lighthouse of Alexandria (second best in my book)
These were called the Seven Wonders of the World.....
But over time they have changed to....
If you want to know what they changed too, just google or ask. I have no qualms about talking about them.
Now the theme is the,"7 Wonders of Nature".....do you see why they are using 7? Again, I am not trying to insult dude, I am telling you where they got the term "7 wonders" and why they are not using 10......
Get it? Dude, no insult, honest...
hoserfella at 11:14 PM JST - 22nd July Ok, Ill keep on truckin' there, Chief.
You appear offended by my reply when you should not be at all...
Confused? How so? I do not follow your religion. Why would I be confused? I really thought you were making some joke as to jesus being on of the wonders of the world when the wonders of the world are listed above.
Your religions was never listed as one of the wonders of the world. Nor was any other religion. What was listed was and is man made things.....
Not saying that religions was not a man mad thing. Which in my views it was. But no religions has ever been listed as a wonder of the world.
That is where the "LOL" lies.....LOL implies that I am finding this funny because religion was never placed as a wonder.
I am not trying to offend you nor am I trying to play you, but to help out check out this.
Just read this and enjoy the read, and really really do not take offense because none is intended.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wondersofthe_World
I really thought you understood where they got the term from......
BTW the great wall in my book should be number one. No other man made object is nor has been greater....
7 Wonders of the World.
Not 7 Religious Wonder of the World.....

Ah Badsey, Mr. Gates' charges were dropped. The police did not wish to push the issue. Could it be that they did not want to come off looking like racist because they arrested a black wrongly?
Answer one question, why were the charges dropped if he was not guilty of them?
Or are the police never in the wrong?
You know I for one blame movies for this idea of prefect cops. Most Americans today grew up watching Dirty Harry, Stallone or Arnie movies.
Believe that every cop is ok and everyone who is not white is the bad guy. Look at some of those movies and see who were the bad guys....
Many American's have lost the ability to ask,"why did that happen" They just accept the reason what ever it is......
Hope that one day people will wake up and start asking,"why".......
Not every cop is correct and not every criminal is a victim of police abuse.
But we need to keep a closer eye on both sides and stop siding with only one.
Some cops are humans too and some of them have issues. Just because you wear a gun and a badge does not make you perfect.
Start to question when something does not smell like roses. If you do that will keep everyone honest......
Your right Badsey, only guilty people get upset when they are arrested for asking an officer to identify himself! Law bidding citizens love getting handcuffs placed on them! Then being thrown into jail! It is every ones civic duty to go peacefully when they get arrested for no reason....
It is not to reason why it is but to do and get gassed and die! Well said!
? Huh??
Badsey at 07:32 PM JST - 22nd July I like this man's PBS specials and he seems like a nice guy and a good teacher (really gets the students thinking). But his personal life can be quite different.
How is he different, please do tell?
What does that have to do with his arrest?
So a black man gets arrested in his home. Why did he get arrested if he lived there? Is it wrong to ask an officer for an id? Or do you believe that you must go peacefully from your own home when someone says they are a cop?

Okay, keep on trucking there dudester. Don't forget, theme of something does not mean much to anyone unless they know what the theme is....

The word of the day is theme;
theme (thm) n. 1. A topic of discourse or discussion. 2. A subject of artistic representation.
'7 Wonders of Nature' I think by using the word,"Nature" gives it away as being natural and not man made.
The theme that is being used here is the same used in,"The 7 Wonders of the world".....

Mt Fuji is a mountain and not a road or man made.

I was replying to your statement that she (the woman) called police because of the alarm. But that is not correct, she called police because she saw two black men at the professor's door trying to open the door.
skipthesong at 09:18 AM JST - 22nd July but what I like to know, why were we here at JT informed that what actually happened was that an alarm was set off, which prompted the caller to call the police in the first place. I personally think an alarm is a good reason to call the police.
Now to your comment;"DO NOT CALL THE POLICE!", I like the way you try and move away from your earlier comment by saying this.
Facts stand, the woman called police because she suspected a break in. That was proper, she was looking out for her neighbor. But, after the police arrived everything went wrong.
After being shown the mans IDs the officer continued with his line of questioning. Why would he continue to ask the man questions if the man proved he lived there?
The officer should have thanked the man and said,"have a nice day.". But he did not do that.
If the officer would have properly done his job he would not have continued the questioning. The man showed him proper IDs (not one but 2).
Bad eyesight? LOL
Facts are a hell of a thing to try and hide. Who was released and now who is under the eye of the news?
If Mr. Gates was guilty of the charges the officer made, then the charges would have stood.
But as we see the charges were dropped. Wonder who was in the wrong here?LOL
Where there is smoke there maybe a fire.

Hey, if she is not with any guilt then they will not find anything.
But as the old saying goes, "Where there's smoke, there's fire" could apply in her case. But we will see.......

He did get home and had to open the back door of his house with his key. Because he could not open the front door because the door lock was damaged. After he disarmed the alarm he and his friend try to open the front door. That is when the neighbor called the police.
She did not call the police because of the alarm, she called the police because she saw two black men trying to open the door.
Professor Gates attempted to enter his front door, but the door was damaged. Professor Gates then entered his rear door with his key, turned off his alarm, and again attempted to open the front door. With the help of his driver they were able to force the front door open, and then the driver carried Professor Gates’ luggage into his home.

Of course Badsey, it was reasonable to continue to question the man after he showed proper ID and proved that he lived at the house. The officer was just making double sure that Mr. Gates lived there and did not have faked the two ID's that he produced.
Come the police officer arrested him because he wanted to prove a point. Then the charges were dropped by them and not the DA. Why would they do that if unless the charges were bogus?
I believe that the only reason the officer continued to question him after he produced his id was because Mr. Gates was black.
Could there be any other reason? If so then tell it......

Psssssst, Sarge the Cambridge DA dropped the charges. The "educated idiot" may have been telling the truth.
It appears that you may have to revise your story there Helter_Skelter as I stated above the DA dropped charges and made a grand statement of how this was just a "was regrettable and unfortunate".
Translation, opps so we made a mistake......LOL
If there was a case to be made, then they (PD and the DA) would have made it. But they (both) want this thing to just go away. The question is why?
Why would the police want to drop the charges? Why not go forward with these charges? If the officer's statement is correct, then it is an open and shut case. So why drop the charges?
Could it be that Mr. Gates was not at fault here and the officer wanted to prove a point? Things that make you go, hmmmmmm.
Facts be the killer, he was released and now the Cambridge PD wants this just to go away.
Racial profiling? Maaaaaaybe....

mareo2 at 10:11 AM JST - 20th July What are the third and fourth choices that some of you wish were offered? Just curious... We have some ideas that dont imply nuclear deterrence (AKA threatening with massive killing of civilians):
Diplomacy with Korea has not worked and ole Kim just keeps on threatening. Now what, give in to any and all his demands because of the fear he may use his nukes?
Economic ties implies you receive something for your goods. What if the country only wants to sell weapons. Do you buy them from that country because you fear getting nuked if you don't?
So spend billions of yen to develop a system that "may work"? What happens when just one (1) nuke gets through? Say,"oh well" and try to build a better one the next time you are nuked?
Spend more billions on a EMP weapon....LOL This is not the matrix this is real life. So as their nuked hit Japan you launch small emp devices to do just what. Turn off their toasters?LOL
Come on time to get with the program and build what needs to be built..
Do not need to invest much, North Korea built theirs with very little effort. Japan can build better, bigger, and most like more effective nukes at a low price. U-237 is just what the doctor ordered....
Actually a so called dying man with nukes is a whole lot more of a problem than job loss. Do not know about you, but ole Kimmie may or may not be dying.
The only thing certain about him is that he is nutz and will launch a nuke is he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed.
Nuke me once shame on you, nuke me twice, opps I am dead....
We have seen how much he cares about sanctions from every country. What happen if he nukes a city or two in Japan? More sanctions? Who will speak for the dead?
Time to arm and arm and arm.
In fact, I think that NK is a strong reminder of how militarism can endager the economy.

For those that do not see any problem with hurting animals. Know that most if not all serial killers like to hurt animals.
In the past, the presence of three behavioral markers, known as the Macdonald triad, was found in some children who went on to develop sociopathy. The triad consists of bedwetting, a tendency to abuse animals, and pyromania.
The Macdonald triad (also known as the triad of sociopathy) is a set of three behavioral characteristics which are associated with sociopathic behavior. The triad was first identified by J.M. Macdonald in "The Threat to Kill", a 1963 paper in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Killing or hurting animals is just part of their life style.

Good point, but what if he did show his id. What then? Here is a link for you....
http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2009/07/20/harvardprofessorgatesarrestedatcambridgehome/
Here is what everyone that knows him are saying;
Friends of Gates said he was already in his home when police arrived. He showed his driver's license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said.
So who is lying? Of course the fine officer would never fudge his report just to prove a point now would he?
Who was this professor and what is his background?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HenryLouisGates,_Jr.
Read up on the man and you may get a different picture than what the officer is trying to paint.
I love the terms folks are using here, how interesting;
I wonder why would you us such a term? Things that make you go, hmmm.
