That area is notorious for its winds. Wind surfers come from all around America as the Columbia River Gorge has awesome winds. Hood River - The Dalles (Oregon cities) during the summer it is an area that has cars lined along the Washington State side and at any given time there will be hundreds all over that area, truly a scenic part of the Columbia River. Ryota Yamada will have some incredible pictures to show. Just for reference I live in this area and read the article in the Tri-City Herald as it was front page news. J. Constantine in Richland - Washington State.

It is a completely different lifestyle versus when I was a kid. In the 70's I do not remember and obese kids in grade school and only about 7-10 out of 400 in Junior High...high school tripled that. Yet Amercians are willing to do this to themselves....I rarely ate fast food growing up..maybe 5 times a year back in the 70's. But todays society is completely different, when I was growing up we did not have the video games/computers or that type of entertainment & I never watched TV.
I remember seeing obese parents shoveling pizza in their faces and then there was their kid. Around 7 years old and already twice the size he should be. It really is a shame what people will do to themselves and some also teach it to their children as they are not active and a child picks up the same lifestyle. My favorite excuse was "I'm not fat I'm just big boned".....riiiiight. Adult Americans can blame nobody but themselves for their weight.

I applaud Japan for the effort, many Nations need to learn form this. However as Philly has pointed out shutting them down is not the end. Once those reactors were fired up they began producing Radioactive Waste and not until all reactors are dismantled and all waste is off of Japanese soil will this truly be a victory. BigBoy also has a valid point...can you make do without it? If you know you are going to have blackouts then you should be able to plan for them. Case in point is that you do not want a blackout during the dead of Summer or Winter. Many of us can do without Air conditioning or Heating during the Spring and Fall. As for myself I have about a month and half in each of those seasons that I do not use AC or Heating. I guess the other question would be how much energy can your store and for how long. If you take the energy that would have been used from rolling blackouts can you store it for the times when energy consumption is up? I do not know.

Interesting views...Lets say I live in Thailand and I sold someone..lets say...Sarin Gas. Now I have an idea what it is going to be used for I just know it is not going to be used as a party favor. So if that individual - group that I sold said item to uses it in lets say a Subway...(地下鉄サリン事件, Chikatetsu Sarin Jiken?) Should I be allowed to roam around free or should .......lets say Japan be allowed to extradite & prosecute me? I realize that there are differences between the two incidents as one sold items that were to be used to kill Americans, so says the article. However I do not know if any of his items actually killed any Americans but should we wait till people are killed or should we act before lives are lost? Before you lay into me just remember all I am asking are questions.

The Death Penalty: Some can't live with it while all can live without it. As for myself it is a necessary deterrent.....What if the (地下鉄サリン事件, Chikatetsu Sarin Jiken?) in Tokyo had killed hundreds? In my distorted opinion if it was 13 or 70 that had died, a person with the desire to comment such a merciless attack deserves death. I have seen murdering pedophiles declared ready to enter society and released only to take away someone else's baby daughter and murder them. My friend was shot by another man who stood two feet away and pulled the trigger then did 3 years for it. I read that China has almost 5 times the population of the Untied States but has roughly 1 fifth of the crime rate. I am not saying we should all be like China but it seems that when it comes to a criminals actions a harsh reaction may be the best solution.

AKB48 does not bother me like many have said..It is just every other day there is some kind of article on them and it gets somewhat overwhelming, meanwhile numerous of Japans truly talented musicians are rarely spoken of. Then again anytime you post an article on AKB48 you are sure to get numerous responses. In other words by helping with excessive articles and the over exposure you know that many will read your articles and comment.....well done JT....well done indeed...I just confirmed my own theory.

Having never experienced an Earthquake or Tsunami and the devastation left in their wake I can truly say I have no idea what they are feeling. However losing a family member, in my case a mother at age 7, or someone you deeply love leaves a scar that really never goes away. Yes ....eventually the tears did stop but even 40 years later it still hurts and something can set off those feelings from time to time. My point being is that there are so many people that need/needed help - compassion - understanding and since this tragedy impacted so many lives it will take time to try and help everyone. Yet one thing I did not understand is when I read that they were going to end unemployment benefits to so many people whose livelihoods were lost because of the disaster. To me it seems like that is the last thing you would want to do...even though it did happen later. Leaving someone without a means to support themselves or their families could only deepen those feelings of depression. You lost your home....your family members...now you have no income and no jobs to find. I think all of those things combined would easily overwhelm someone and what is the easiest way out......

I've talked to several Russians and all say basically the same thing. Living conditions are very harsh; one lady lived with her mother and daughter in a small one bedroom apartment. She worked two jobs and averaged just over the equivalent of 50 dollars a month. True or not I do not know as I do not live in Russia. Yet to hear it from several different individuals I tend to believe it. Limited schooling - limited jobs that pay well. Abusive alcoholic Father figures & many things that I take for granted in my daily life are considered a luxury. Many have never driven a car at the age of 30....so many things to list...and young adults see this and could easily become depressed at their prospects for having a good life. Hence the Suicide rate...as I said this is what I have pieced together from talking with several different Russians. It does not mean it is fact.

They should have stuck with Del Toro as the director..Peter Jackson did a good job with the Trilogy but the Hobbit has a much darker feel to it and that is one of Del Toro's strong points. I mean before the Lord of the Rings the only Peter Jackson film I could name was "The Frighteners" which was great, but that was it. I am sure the movies will take in tons of cash...I might even go to the movies...which I have not been since the Lord of the Rings. Regardless of who directs it I am looking forward to seeing it.

When I was in Tokyo there were several Japanese who came and asked to practice English. Each individual was polite and courteous and I never felt looked down upon in fact it was just the opposite. I felt special as complete strangers wanted to talk to me, I was honored. I will never forget the experience.
