Everything in the world was originally invented in China. 5000 years ago.

Including the integrated circuit, LCD display, computers, programming languages, etc. All Chinese.

I think everything being discussed in this thread has more to do with the communist government of the last 60 years than the dynastic monarchy from the 5,000 years before that, don't you?

The only intellectual property China will ever protect is Chinese intellectual property.

How about not meeting demand in order to reduce pollution of the environment?

That's a noble sentiment, kurispisu. But it's kinda silly. Because they're in business to meet demand and make a profit. Because people need safe, reliable airplanes to travel on. Because present-day aircraft and the engines they use are far, far more fuel-efficient than the ones they're replacing.

Yes, we could abandon airplanes. And cars, trucks, trains, boats and buses. I don't expect that to happen, do you?

Fantastic performance by Adele, and a very nice ovation from her peers.

"So he didn't end up doing Japan a service." I really wish this forum had an "Edit" button.

Mr. Woodford (and no, fredster, I didn't have to look up the man's name) did Japan a service. Problem is, Japan has said, "Thanks, but no thanks." Instead of bringing up the entire board on criminal charges, the stockholders have allowed themselves to be mollified by an "independent" investigation and a deep bow and apology. Shogenai, ne?

So he didn't end up doing Japan a disservice. He did, however, open the eyes of the rest of the world to the way businesses are run, and regulations are enforced, in Japan.

Torafusu, it wasn't actually a theremin, though the device used was similar. Have a look at the Wikipedia article:

Why would the west like to see the rise of 'muslim brotherhood' stretching from Tunisia. Libya,Egypt and syria? I just dont 'GET IT"!? That doesnt make sense....

Here in the west, freedom and democracy are two of our most cherished principles, even if it doesn't always appear that way. For the nations that have freed themselves during the Arab Spring, we can hope only that the people will get the government they choose. Even if it's not a government that's friendly to the west. To want anything else for those people would be hypocrisy.

Those of us here in the States are aware of the fact that the mileage number on a motor vehicle is called an EPA estimate. Operative word: estimate. It has nothing to do with real world driving or, in this woman's case, a worst-case scenario.

None of us has any reason to believe (or any proof) that Honda did anything other than the U.S. mandated mileage testing. None of us has reason to believe (or any proof) that Honda advertised numbers based on anything other than the honest results of that testing.

If this woman is hell bent on suing someone, she should sue the EPA. Honda was just doing what U.S. laws say it can do. I will be shocked if Honda doesn't appeal this decision and win.

Oh yeah... your mileage may vary.

Sony appears to have largely given up on innovation, which is what made the company great all the way through the '80s. If they try to survive on "me too" products, they're done for.

These Softbank commercials may be the clearest expressions yet of Japan's ambivalence toward multiculturalism, restructured family roles, and identity formation in a postmodern globalized economy.

Or maybe they're just funny commercials made to sell phones.

Simply put, there is no alternative to the F-35 program. It must succeed.

That is a foolproof recipe for failure.

How does a house's internal temperature prevent snow accumulating on the roof if it's a properly insulated house?

Wipeout, good luck finding a properly insulated house in Japan.

I watched a bit of the Sharapova match. She has gotten much worse than she used to be. It used to be annoying, now it's alarming - it sounds like she being violated. Repeatedly. I had to turn it off.

Maybe not, luca, but we've all seen the effect mentioned in the article. As soon as there's a moderate pan, the shortcomings of 24fps are evident. Since they're no longer dealing with the limitations of film stock, there's no reason not to bump up the speed....

...but: there will now be at least twice as many CGI frames to render. That's time and money.

If Sony believes that Olympus will recover from the scandal, it makes perfect sense to buy up a major stake right now, while the stock price is low. Hang on for a few years, reap the benefits of owning a piece of a profitable company, then sell the stock in a few years when its price has recovered. Or keep buying stock until they control the company. Sounds like a win either way.
