3 down.
@some14some: um... it might also have had something to do with the Phils hitting 4 home runs off pitchers (and I know this may shock you) WHO WERE NOT JAPANESE! And for your information, JT reports on these games because Japanese players are present. That doesn't mean that Japanese players are necessarily the reason the games go the way they do. JT knows that - they dedicated an entire HALF A SENTENCE to Iwamura's errors. He didn't account for the EIGHT OTHER RUNS the Phillies scored.
Sorry, Hotbox... I'm pretty sure the Phils are going to finish it up tonight. They have everything going for them - home field, momentum, the best pitcher on either team on the mound, the big bats waking up... It might be close, but I can't see the Rays taking this one. Helluva good team and great manager, though.

I suspect that even in February, hiding in tunnels under a volcanic island might get a little bit hot. Also, as the article states, many of the Japanese casualties were soldiers in the tunnels who died from heat stroke. I expect they're basing this on fact, not making it up. No argument about the napalm, it certainly was a huge factor in the tunnel casualties.
Slightly off topic... doesn't Iwo Jima go by a different name these days?

As a Phillies fan, I have to hope for the Rays to win. The Sox are still a scary team, and Fenway is still a tough place to win on the road.
Having said that, way to go Sox!

Yes, for heaven's sake, wallpaper the inside of the plane like a Tokyo subway car so I can see... no difference at all in my airfare.

Professor, that seems to be at the core of every comment I've seen from you. Thanks so much for your insight. You've inspired us all.
As for J-baseball: it's true that it's not MLB-level, but it's fun to watch and the crowds are nuts. If the league wants to keep their best players at home, maybe they should pay them more. I imagine if the players were getting about 80% of what they would be paid in the U.S., none of this would be a problem.

I've visited Japan twice, for two weeks in 2005 and for three weeks last year. I didn't need tours because I'd spent months on research. But I did enjoy being led through Himeji-jo last year by an English-speaking volunteer guide. She taught me much more about the castle and courtly life than I ever would have learned on my own. These volunteers are fantastic and worthy of far more than train fare and lunch.
For someone who doesn't have the time or inclination to do all the research, these tours can be the best way to see the highlights of any place. For someone who's in Tokyo for two weeks on business and has a couple of days to see something other than the inside of meeting rooms, a tour is almost certainly the best option. No need to sneer at the casual tourist, folks.

I can certainly understand the use of carbon fiber in body panels. But the chassis? I think I'd be a bit cautious about making a chassis from a material that shatters rather than deforms.

As a resident of the U.S. who is relying on NBC and its rather large group of affiliates to see the Games, it didn't matter to me that the opening ceremonies were shown only on tape delay. I was in the shower and then at work while the ceremony was actually happening, as were most Americans. But I can understand why those who would have been able to watch were upset. I'd rather see something live if the opportunity exists.

Whether or not North Korea "falls in line" in terms of denuclearization, it will never have any measure of prosperity under its current government. The only one with prosperity in a Stalinist government is Stalin.

**Chimps and DS:
It's clear that you haven't visited the U.S. South in quite a while. The Southeast region of the country is solid red states.
The people who used to be "Dixiecrats" have been convinced by the Christian Right and the gun lobby that any democrat will take away their guns, raise their taxes, make them bring tasteful gifts to gay weddings and make their kids go to school with _____s and _____s and _____s. (Fill in the ethnic groups of your choice.)
As a resident of the South who is both Democrat and agnostic, I can tell you from personal experience that rednecks are definitely not Democrats.

I guess it's just me, but the first thing I noticed is that o-kami is rockin' the Sans-a-Belts! Why not just a nice light summer kimono? If sumo rikishi have to wear kimono, can't we all agree that the royal family should do the same? Y'know, tradition and all.

The French Connection. Zooming along under the "el" tracks, narrowly missing pedestrians and other cars, the chase and the way it was filmed has always had me flinching and leaning in my seat. And there's a reaction shot of Gene Hackman just after he's had a near miss that's priceless.
