Pre-emptive strike: for those who would seriously complain about the fossil fuel issue, the answer is: they don't use fossil fuels. These cars run on methanol.

kyoken: you understand that companies like Sharp make the hardware, right? They've come up with the technology, now the media companies will try to take advantage of it. The porn industry will run with 3D and it will reach critical mass.

I used one of the original Sonicare toothbrushes (before Philips bought them out) until it died. Loved it. But I didn't immediately replace it - I just started using a regular toothbrush again. And surprise - my dental condition went unchanged. No extra effort from the hygenist when I got my teeth cleaned, no problems at all. If there's no difference in the results, I can't see spending 12,800 yen on something that does the same job as the free toothbrush I get from from my dentist.

Every time we start bumping up against the theoretical limits of these technologies, someone comes up with a way to extend them. We will almost certainly be asking the same question, djuice, when they're down to a 2-nanometer process, 0.1 volts, and 1 TB chips.

It makes me chuckle to think that I spent the extra money on my first PC to upgrade to 64MB of RAM.

This gesture, while largely symbolic, is still a good thing. Any time anyone cuts down on available nuclear weapons, we're all better off. (If for no other reason than this results in fewer nuclear weapons that could possibly be stolen.)

@HeyLars: the acronym for Mutually Assured Destruction is MAD. MADD is Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Is that a model number, or a serial number???

No injuries. These cars aren't perfectly safe, but it's amazing that the drivers walk away from so many crashes. Another consideration is the layout of the tracks, which now include large runoff areas around curves. Where cars used to run into walls, now they get stuck in big gravel traps. That's probably the biggest contributor to the increased safety of F1 over the years.

@pawatan: I can sort of agree, but you must remember that she was under duress, just as her daughters were. Yes, she should have done something. But it isn't as if she could make a phone call and instantly solve the problem. She would have faced what sound like serious repercussions at home.

3-D done well can be incredible, as anyone who has seen Avatar can attest. I'll be interested (a few years down the road) to see sports in 3-D. Imagine a baseball game... a behind-the-plate camera... a foul ball right back at the camera... you'll be diving for cover!

Keep an eye on HTC. I have one of their iPhone style full touch screen models with a slide-out keyboard, and it's fantastic.

It strikes me as odd that Shiseido, a quintessential Japanese brand, is using an image model who is trying so hard to look non-Japanese. They would be much better served by using someone more mature who hasn't had her eyes done, who hasn't lightened her hair, and who represents the beauty of Japanese women.

Don't forget about The Maltese Falcon or Casablanca. For more modern flicks, The Usual Suspects. I actually shuddered.

Tokyo is inland and not a highly susceptible to tsunamis.

Looking at map... looking at Badge213... looking at map again...

Kyoto is inland. Nagano is inland. Hell, I'll even give you western Tokyo-to as inland. Ask someone within half a klik of the mouth of the Sumida if they're "inland" and they'll look at you like you're crazy.

"Illegal"? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being arrested for it. There may be team rules against it, but if they suspended every jock who was bangin' the cheerleaders, they wouldn't be able to put a full team on the field.

For the people who don't understand what a tsunami is: it's not a 10cm "wave". It's a temporary change in sea level. And it comes in force, not gradually. The Boxing Day tsunami wasn't a 1m wave, it was a 1m rise in sea level.

If there really is going to be a 3m tsunami hitting Japan at 10:00 am, I wouldn't be anywhere within 10 km of the shoreline or the mouth of a river.

Seismic activity in Okinawa... then Chile... It seems that activity anywhere along the Ring of Fire begets activity somewhere else.
